Default Step 2 CK attempt

I recently failed My CK exam with just 4 points. I dont know what should I do at this time of year , wanted to apply for this year's match but the news was kind of shocking & i feel paralyzed by thinking about my chances of getting into residency becoming weaker for I'm a graduate of 2008. I need advice whether to continue this pursuit of practicing medicine in US or think about an alternate career. My close friends are all suggesting me something different. should I give it one more try or is it going to be useless even if I pass with a good score? I dont aim for some big. I would like to get into FM or Psych. Need to make a wise decision at this point of my life. Even if I retake the test again what do you guys suggest the time period & strategies to get better scores will help me. Please all kind of input will be appreciated. I need help!!

Oh sorry for your results These forums are not active like they use to be. It's hard getting an answer here and half the postings go to some spam website or person's blog so they can make money.

4 points is very close. Lots of people have not cleared steps in 1st or even 2nd attempt and got residency.

Don't stop studying for this and take it in September 1st 2nd week maybe and apply in end of September with passing results. All exams taken from now through Sept is delayed until Sept 16 but check main usmle website.

Your friends dont know all the work you put in. I am sure you passed other steps and all this work. You have nothing to lose if you don't try and clear this and get ecfmg certified, even if it's not officially on paperwork because of delay.

You replied to me for my DIT CK question I had. How did you prepare for this exam? Other books, questions other than UW?

Maybe then after you say how the prep was, you can adjust things to make better use of your study time from what everyone says.

UW is obviously a definite but not sure how you used UW like timed, random, tutor and other things. Offline online UW and nbme is also big differences.

Thank you so much for replying. I passed my step 1 & CS exam so far.For CK I prepared too long may be I got exhausted at the end. The materials I used were MTB 2 for IM MTB 3 for the rest. I did UW 2 times but I think I needed to practice in timed & random mode rather than system wise. I did tried DIT, didnt like it as the guys lecturing were only reading the book with no concepts. So far I think my biggest mistake was not to practice questions in timed mode, in real exam I had such a tough time to finish every block on time, hardly had any time to think!! Most of the exam questions were too long , I had only 2 minutes left per block for the last 4-5 questions no matter how hard I tried I dont think I picked right choices for the last few questions. which makes a huge amount of questions. Lastly I didnt take any online NBME's which was the blunder. I hope I can achieve my goal this time. Will retake in September. Thank you again

I don't think the books help much for these clinical exams. I tried many times. Sometimes I wonder if the review course will be good to look after main studying but I think it's more about practicing. This exam doesn't tell if you will be a good doctor. It is national test so everyone has to know same base information. It is difficult to apply the review books into questions unless you are doing both from the same time but most books and courses are superficial. So keep doing 100-120/2-3 blocks max/day in timed or timed tutor but all random. Take notes from each question you need and that will be your review book you look over every day and each week. Maybe get another set of online questions from kaplan or usmlerx for more practice, nothing offline to keep practicing and learning from questions. There is no #1 question source. Maybe split 1/2 UW per day and 1/2 other question source online. Just calculate how many you need to do for 2 months. Maybe take 1 or 2 maximum online assessment in 1/4 and 1/2 into your test date and that is enough. You have enough baseline knowledge now from all previous studying and this time it will be better

you are so right reading the books line to line or word to word doesn't help at all. Its all about applying your knowledge in a clinical scenario & about making decisions quickly.Thank you for your helpful comments, hopefully it will be better next time if I plan my studies strategically from now on, u can try DIT may be youwill like it but dont buy the course right away, first listen to 1 or 2 lectures & see if its worth it. Wish you all the best buddy!!

I am not sure what went wrong for you because as what I hear is that 50 % of ck is step 1, so since you got an average score in step 1 , you should have passed
I havent done the exam yet but I dont agree with the above advise
the best way to compensate for a failure is to get a really good score , not only pass
So you should aim for 240+ , you are not gonna turn from a failed mark into 240+ within 2 months !
If I were you I would apply for 2017 match .. I would read kaplan books, watch videos for subjects that I feel week, repeat them twice, then do Uworld in timed, random mode , and repeat it twice, do NBME , and USWA.. if you got 240+ in both, then go for the exam, if not , repeat again or do another q bank until you reach your goal.
Then when you do CK , start preparing for step 3 ..
I think a 240+ in CK and a pass in step 3 in 2017 with on time application will be much better than a pass score with no step 3 in 2016 with a late application ...
thats what I think .. and thats what I would do If I were in your shoes !

Good luck with whatever you decide mate.

I think the step 1 score matters only when you take Ck within 6 months of step 1 ,I took much longer than that in a hope I would get better but I might have become worse regarding my prep & as I said I had a terrible exam with sleep deprivation for the last few days, I was really frustrated in the middle of the test not being able to finish many blocks on time so a lot of things matter on your exam performance But I agree with your advise barely passing the test is not going to be enough, will really have to struggle to get a great score this time. Thanx for advice.
