Default What do I do?

I was just devastated to learn I failed step 2 CK by 8 points, 201. I was supposed to apply for this year and now I am on the fence about whether I should go ahead with it or not.

my background - my step 1 is unimpressive (barely passed), it is for that reason, I studied long and hard for step 2, but it doesn't seem to have paid off.

I am scheduled to take CS next month.

My interest lies in psychiatry and I have completed many electives in it. I have LORs. The only thing is my step 2 now.

Should I go ahead and retake step by early September? I should receive the score by October.
I would be doing assessments throughout to see if I can get a 220+, otherwise I won't rush the test since I am already in a horrible place.

Feedback would be recommended. Do you know anyone who has matched on their second attempt into psychiatry? Thanks

Sorry the result came like that. You can match in psychiatry but you will need CS and CK passed first.

You should still try to study if you can for Step 2 CS. Will you have enough practice by then? It is not easy to get a date and travel.

Other issue is applying for residency without Step 2CK because you will need that because you don't want to submit whatever you got with step 1 and pending cs result and the ck failure.

IF you want to apply this year, you should but only after you get a passing CK score. You will probably have to apply in October after CK and CS results. It is not late but better try than regret to wait 1 year.

If studying for CS, not so much study time for CK for full concentration but am sure it is possible for some hours. You should not take a break from CK studying because you already know enough material to borderline pass.

I think 1 or 1.5 more month for CK if you start tomorrow again is good but you need a changed plan on how to study.

Other people will guide better.

How long did you prepare for Step 2CK and what did you use to study and how did you use them? Did you take assessment exam? Did you do uworld random or timed? Other mcq's? Review books?

How many months or years was gap from when you took Step 1? Are you in school or working?

You should answer those questions for us and then someone will say what to do in same manner or give adjustment on.

Many people match with multiple failure. Do not get discouraged but you should take no more than 1 or 1.5 extra to clear CK so you can take exam in September and wait for CS and CK result by October and apply for Psychiatry. You can do it.

Thank you for the response and words of encouragement

I took 1.5 months off and studied using MTB 2 and 3, uworld and kaplan qbank. I was scoring 55s-60s with the qbanks at the end. NBME - I took 2 of them, the first one I failed, I think I had scored around 185 and the second I got 210. I had 2 weeks following that to study so I didn't want to psych myself out and just went ahead with the exam.

I'm currently completing my electives but I think I am going to push them back and first focus on passing step 2 CK. You are right, I am already forgetting some material I learnt and do not want to put myself at a further disadvantage by pushing it.

CS - I feel a bit more comfortable with and have been practicing. I am hoping if I give it another week, I should have all the cases done. I wasn't able to find an earlier date which is why I have to wait till next month.

When is the latest I should consider applying for residency if I want to be considered?

I think the latest you want to think of applying is by October sometime. November is probably the last minute. The mspe is released on October 1 but once it is, you have maybe 2 or 3 weeks more. Safe window is maybe 3-4 weeks maximum after opening day for application. Safe where majority more than 50% people have given applications in by then.

How did you feel when you took the test? Did the questions feel from what you studied? You did a lot of questions. This time, I may suggest to only do questions and not do any other resources. Maybe time was spent more on reviewing MTB and less on questions from uworld?

Forget the assessment now. You have baseline passing, borderline. Instead of MTB, I would get online uworld again and take notes on all the questions you need to and revise that only. If you need you can refer to MTB but you have referred to it already many times for an idea so again is not needed for that. MTB is very superficial with information and if a concept is not clear from uworld, then you need to refer to a bigger reference if you have or post a message in the forum for someone to help explain,

In middle of studying after CS, you can do a UWSA again and use that for extra questions.

The above should take up to 4 or 6 weeks maximum if that is all you are doing. Give it a try for 1 week and see. If problems, ask here again.

On your report sheet, it is probably all in the middle or lower side for all subjects? I would not neglect any subject even if it is your best on this new study time but pay extra attention on score report on weaker low marks subjects.

I don't know how you did the mcq from uworld. If timed or random or subject? You may want to do some changes in that. Make sure to work under timed pressure. Random is good to keep you thinking. Forget your percent scoring and use uworld to learn and think in fast clock situation. If you want, you can do mcq in 10-20 question timed and review all them after and do as such. 3 blocks a day is maximum anybody can really do. Reality is 2 or 3 blocks a day. Keep a good schedule to rest, eat, exercise. Just take notes for each question and organize notes by subject to revise. You will make it
