India Step 2 CK Experience- 252

Hey guys. So I am finally done with step 2 ck. Keeping up with the tradition of this wonderful forum to share exam experience, here I am, sharing mine.

This was my last exam before I get ECFMG certified. So for obvious reasons, I was pretty darn nervous. I passed my step 1 and CS in first attempt.

Preparation Time- Total 7 months (was doing my internship as well for the first 5 months). Last 2 months were just for studying.

Material Used-- I had read IM and Ob/Gyn Kaplan notes for my final year. So I reviewed them. And then I used MTB step 2 CK and MTB IM for Medicine. I used MTB step 2 ck and step 3 for the rest of the subjects.

Kaplan notes for Ob/Gyn are pretty good. I also used Kaplan Pediatrics for a lot of sections like cardiology, immunology, orthopaedics.

MTB step 3 is pretty much a copy of Kaplan notes. Its just better organised with certain updates.

UWorld is a must. I need not emphasize that fact. I used a 3 month subscription. Did the questions twice. Doing the questions multiple times will help you only if you try to think of the concept behind the right answer. Don't just jump it. You'll have a visual memory of the right answer anyway.

I used First Aid in last 3 weeks. Just read it. I think I could have skipped it and still scored the same. Its not indispensible for CK I think.

QBanks- I only used Uworld.

Self Assessments-- I did UWSA, NBME 6 and NBME 7 online. I also did NBME 2,3 and 4 offline. There isn't much purpose in doing these tests offline because you won't get an idea of ur score. Don't even try to google it. The only thing u might do is figure out the wrong answers. But even those "offline" answer keys are not totally reliable.

Real Exam-- Its a 9 hour test. 44 questions/block max. The real exam is nerve wracking. I don't think you might be able to add a lot of time to your allotted 45 min break time because the blocks are really packed. Take some light food and some drinks to the test center. You can split your break time as per your preference. I followed a simple method. Did 2 blocks, took a 5-7 min break. Did 2 more blocks, another break and so on till the last 2 blocks. I never took a really long break. I was just so excited and nervous. I wanted to get over with it as soon as possible

Score Correlation-
UWSA- 264 (1 month before the test)
NBME 6- 254 (3 weeks before the test)
NBME 7- 247 (1 week before the test)

Real deal- 252

As usual, NBME was a better predictor, just like Step 1. NBME 7 is a little harder, so you might wanna take it before you do NBME 6 or any other NBME, just so that you get that feeling- "I am getting better!"

Tips--
1) Always do Uworld blocks in a timed mode.
2) Always keep an eye on the clock in real exam. Time seems to run faster!
3) Never get stuck on a question. You'll hit a mental block and might screw up rest of ur questions. Mark it and move forward. Come back to it later. This will save you some time to review your answers in the end.
4) Drug Ad questions look intimidating. If you don't understand it in one go, mark it and move to the next question. Do it in the end when you have some time to spare. I had 1 drug ad question. Fortunately, i figured it out and didn't have to review it.
5) Media questions- I had 2 or 3. I think one of them was pretty straightforward but rest were kinda confusing. Just be ready for them.
6) Now the answer to the question- What does the real test look like? Is it more like UWSA or more like NBME?

I don't know. Frankly the exam is so long and tiring that you don't get the time to analyse it and once u r done, you don't remember enough questions to think abt them in retrospect.

Bottom Line- Do your best. Use your sources. Do self assessments, especially NBMEs. And be at your brightest and fittest on the test day.

Good luck guys and girls.

See you in the match.

I made separate notes but attached them in my MTB book. U can't write a whole lot of stuff in the margins of the book. Use sticky notes or staple sheets to ur book.
