Default I passed

Passed with God's grace

Step 2CK -247 - I had only slept for 1 1/2 hrs night before the exam (09/07/2015) and was thinking of postponing the exam. Got some encouragement from wife and went for it. At the end I am satisfied though in my full capacity I would have 10 -15 points more but such was the destiny. No regrets.

Step 1 - 228

Trying for anesthesiology

Got 15 yrs experience in UK

Hi Pedro

No problems. My Skype id - nimitkshah

I have lots to say about my preparation. But I will make it short and useful.

The most important resource is USMLE World Q bank. I finished it twice and was scoring 80-84% towards the end during the second time.

U may start with Kaplan Videos and lecture notes and form them your base. As u go on doing UWorld, u may annotate your KLN (Kaplan Lecture notes). My KLN were heavily underlined and annotated.

Some of the questions were very similar to UWorld but to mind you, USMLE have changed their pool and it would be better to get an idea also from someone who took the exam after 13th July.

I have also got lots of materials which I will be happy to share with you.

In order to get good scores, u will need to do lot of time practice. U will need to read questions faster and also minimize lingering on a difficult question - so to summarize, you will need a very good technique of answering questions. What you will put behind your efforts will show up on the day of the exam.

At the end I would say it is an easy exam and much more doable than step 1. All u will need is doing UWorld questions twice and a good question answering technique.

I hope this helps

Hi

My UWSA score was 252 three days before the exam. I never took any NBME during my step 2CK, however I took 2 tests offered by Kaplan and I scored 72% and 76% a month before. I felt NBME was highly variable and honestly I did not want to be overconfident in the exams by obtaining good scores in NBME. This is why I only wanted to take UWSA to see where did I stand. By practicing U World twice, I had ironed out my flaws in my exam technique which according to me is very important. I was happy at the end of my second practice of UWorld questions and was confident of taking the exam. If only I could have slept longer and be more fresher on the day, my scores would have been better as I did have to hurry up in couple of blocks and I did not do well in Biostats which requires a very fresh mind and lots of time. I had practiced Biostats a lot and also understood it very well. It is only because of lack of time I did not do well in that.

Hi Nimithshah..

Congrats on your great score and thanks for the feedback..

I do have some queries regarding the study materials which i think you can help me out..
-If i omit kaplan notes and lectures,Do UW & MTB can cover all the topics ?If not which all subjects do i need to do Kaplan?
-Any topics we need to refer from outside these materials?
-Im left with 3 weeks ,just finish UW and planning to revison,But my score stays the same from the beginnig..Any advice will be appreciated ..

Hi SAMM

I would suggest you read Surgery and Obs Gyn from Kaplan lecture notes. Even the Obs Gyn supplement of Kaplan alone will be ok for Obs Gyn, if you are short of time. It is definitely useful. Unfortunately Pediatrics in Kaplan lecture notes is a bit more than necessary and in MTB is definitely less than u would need. I would suggest you read Kaplan lecture notes for Pediatrics (try your best if u can).

For Medicine and Psychiatry, I would say UW and MTB is ok as Kaplan would only add little more. If u need to choose between UW + MTB and Kaplan, go for UW+MTB only for Medicine and Psychiatry. For Biostats, go for UW Biostats Q bank, it is very good. Kaplan Biostats is short read and sufficient.

In the end, I would say UW is best. However USMLE have changed their question pool recently and so get some advice from some one who have appeared after 13th July. Even then UWorld will be a great help as it will not only improve your exam technique but also give you important material to go through. Do it always timed mode.

I hope this helps.

Hi Mindy

Thanks a lot. I did read MTB 2,3 and IM as my medicine was weak. And I did get the benefit of it as my medicine scores were in high performance. Being an anaesthetist, I was always good in Surgery and Resp and Cardio medicine and it was no surprise that I got the highest in these specialties. But overall my better performance in Medicine got me such high scores. Reading these 3 books won't take much time as they are written by nearly same authors. MTB 2 and 3 will also give you the newer DSM 5 changes in Psychiatry. Reading these 3 books will give important facts such as best initial test, next important step and best diagnostic test in nearly each disorder. Also there are tables nicely summarizing at the end of the topics which are very helpful. MTB IM is certainly readable and a very good addition if you want to bump up your performance in Medicine which is nearly 50% of your test!

I hope this helps.

I wish you all the very Best

Nimit Shah

Sri,

I would advice you to give 6 months. Each day around 10 hrs of reading. Start with reading Kaplan Lecture notes. Finish one reading. This should be around 2 months. Then get UWorld subscription. Watch Kaplan videos now along with doing UWorld questions either in the morning or late evening. I used to do it in the morning just to get my mind getting used to solve questions in the morning so that I get used to the same conditions as in exam. Watch the video in late afternoon and then revise from KLN in the evening. Annotate KLN from UWorld and also stick copies of the tables from MTB 2,3 and IM in your KLN. This would help u to glance a topic towards the final period of prep. I had a photocopier for this. This would be another 2-3 months. In the last month, do UWorld again. Don't go for any other bank as even though the questions are good for eg in Kaplan Q bank, somehow you won't relate them to the exact exam questions. I did do Obs Gyn and Pediatrics questions from Kaplan Q bank but still my performance in this 2 was lower compared to others. ONLY STICK TO UWORLD.

Take UWSA before 15 days. This will tell u where do u stand and give some time to revise any specialty u might be weak in.

Most importantly always do timed mode questions in UWorld and mix specialties at the earliest u can.

Don't go for any other materials. The one thing which will help u is good exam technique as the questions will be long. So picking clues in every question is important. So when u prepare always underline facts which are characteristic to each single topic as this will be your clues. If you don't have the habit of picking clues, you will waste time in the real exam and unnecessarily linger on thinking and ultimately answering it wrong.

So during your prep, always try to understand the concepts in all topics and remember what is unique in all topics.
