Default My Failure 10 Years After Med School

Hi People
6 months, I spent 6 months on CK and after today's test, I'm pretty much sure I failed.
I'm an IMG who graduated 10 years ago and I was planning to take usmle tests first step2CK, then step1 and lastly CS.
First I studied 3.5 months for CK, I thought it was enough and took a practice test at Prometric test center, it came 60%.
wouvv that was a shock, then I studied 1 more month, took NBME6, Bam! 196.

I wasn't sure what was going on but even though I got 196, considering I did 75% correct I thought I'm on the right track. Than I went over world once again (85 % of it) in timed test mode, 71% mean.
I thought I can do something that I can pass, in the end I had been studying for 6 months but another BAM!
Today in pro metric test center, it was like a torture, people who are taking GRE was hitting keyboards verrry loudly, I had real hard time concentrating. Plus 90% of the questions were not familiar (Thanks UWorld!) , I was shocked, I lost my concentration, panicked. I even just guessed 15-20 questions without completely understanding the vignette. I kept reading again any again, "What the hell is this asking?" , " What was the original complaint?" etc... I lost myself into the long vignettes countless times.
Afternoon sessions were a little bit better but still... I'm 99% sure that I failed.
I know many of you will say, yeah don't worry you'll be fine, everybody thinks like that when they came out of test and they and up 230s, 240s but that's not my case. I know what I did ( or didn't ).
Anyway, for those who would like to take usmle's after a long break, dude! it's not a picnic!
Maybe I should've taken step1 first. I don't know...

BTW my resources were :
FA for ped, OB/GYN , Kaplan lecture notes for internal disease + UW.
1st pass, I read above mentioned books + offline UW
2nd pass same reading + UW online
3rd pass same reading + UW online (only wrong ones)
4th pass no reading only UW online all over again (85% of it) unused, random test mode.

I didn't do any reading for surgery and psych and statistics.
I watched many videos on onlinemeded.org and some pathoma videos on the field that I felt weak.

Best...

I have to agree with you. Each of us has different study technique. So you just cannot apply what others deem effective. Don't listen to people saying "you only need UWorld and MTB" because not everyone studies that way.

Some are more effective using problem-based approach (like Uworld). Some are more systematic and wants everything covered (like Kaplan). Some learns best by using flashcards. Others need videos to review.

I think the challenge in USMLE prep is knowing how you study best. As for me, I study best with videos. So it may take more time than usual... but that is how I can score best. So no matter how hard people try to dissuade me in using videos (they think it's overkill for CK), I still continue using them. And I find them quite effective.

Again, know the most effective way for you to review. Don't just imitate what people who got 260's in this forum say. Always take their advise with a grain of salt. And decide on yourself how to study more efficiently.

Thank you for your comment on this and good luck with your test.
IT's going to be 3 weeks before usmle sends me my score, I think I'll just start for step 1, I'm thinking maybe studying step 2 first might shorten my step 1 study period.
Maybe I should first take an NBME for step 1 and see where I am.
I don't know...

Hi Neuronium

I have done my exam today too.
I think you should not be worried too much. With 85% correct of UWorld, people usually don't fail.
Keep your head up.

Cheers,

Hi aspergatus,
Thanks for encouragement. 85% is the number of questions I did in 4th round. out of that I did 72% correct. Sorry for misunderstanding.
And the reason that I believe I failed is I panicked. If I would've stayed calm and concentrated, probably I would believe I pass.
Those GRE test takers are still pissing me off. I wonder if I can find a time frame that GRE takers wouldn't show up.

Why they don't announce the resultssss!!! I know they will do it today or tomorrow or next week but I hoped to get my result 12:01 AM. Nope, didn't happen.
I keep reloading the oasis score release webpage.
I'm studying step 1 for 2 weeks now, I just need to know if I failed at step 2 CK. I will retake it right after step 2 CS.

Whoever is calculating the results, c'mooooooonnn!!!

pheewww, I feel better, thanks usmle-forums

Question Results

Did you get your results yet? I'm in a similar situation and need to know if it's possible to pass while still failing NBMEs.

After the month of studying after the NBME did you take another one? I have a separate post explaining my situation. Do you think I have a chance at all? Also did you do UWSA?

No I only did one NBME and after seeing that I'm still not there. I did another pass with Uworld then took the test.
I think you'll be fine, your UW results are good enough. Plus, it seems step 2 CK has been challenging for numerous people these days.

Good luck!

Hello! I am a US-IMG. I left med school for two years due to financial reasons. I am afraid that on my medical school transcript will appear that I failed 2 years. Do I have good chances to match if I get good LORs and good USMLE scores?
