In emphysema, you have destruction of the airways and therefore gases (including carbon monoxide) won't have membranes to diffuse through.

In Asthma, you don't have destruction, you have air trapping in small alveoli. More air means more chances for Carbon Monoxide to diffuse.

Hey guys..
plz correct me if i'm wrong isn't DLco normal in asthma and pure chronic bronchitis , and decreased in COPD(emphysema) ? as i remember, situations where we have increased DLco include pulmonary hemorrhage such as in Goodpasture syndrome.

Best Regards,

Best Regards,
You are right sam. Thus, to differentiate btw chronic bronchitis and asthma you do the bronchodilator reversibility test.
