Smile My thoughts on Step 2 ck 260/86

Having taken Step 2 CK and after getting the score, I wanted to share my thoughts about this exam. I have read a lot of CK experiences here on this forum and it sure helped me a lot. I don't know whether I would be able to do the same but nevertheless I think I should give a try. If anyone of you finds it useful, I would be very delighted. So, here it goes...

Planning a good preparation strategy for step 2 CK is the most important thing one can do and once you do that, I think a hell lot of work is done. We all want to get a good score and sure ready to work hard for it.... All we need to do is to find the right stuffs to study and how to study. In my opinion, 3-4 months is more than enough if you are dedicating your whole time for studying purpose only. Kaplan CK Books, Kaplan videos except Surgery, MTB 3, Kaplan CK Qbank, Uworld and some of NBME forms is all that I would suggest....But in the end, whatever you decide to do, do only if you trust it completely, so you can pour all your heart.

Start with Kaplan books and videos..try to finish it in 1 and half months or so...then start Kaplan qbank subject wise along with MTB 3. MTB 2 ck is good but it won't give you the same amount of information for the same time invested. Both qbanks, Kaplan and Uworld are good but they are not complete in itself, so I would suggest doing them both. First Kaplan qbank subject wise to completely know all the facts and basic things right and then Uworld in random mode. Engage your brain to think creatively. I mean like why this answer and why not this one...try getting into the question....I know it sounds so simple but we often forget it the most and this would seriously help you on your exam day no matter what how bad your exam day is going to turn out.

With one month left or whenever you feel comfortable, start doing NBME forms. NBME 4 is the most difficult as they all say and it actually predicted my score well but one should keep only one form for predicting the score and others for assessing the progress of your preparation. Decide when you are at your best stage of preparation and give one NBME form...the score that comes would be very close to your actual score in CK. As for other forms, take them to know different kinda questions and to gain acquaintance with the most likely questions going to be seen in Step 2 CK. The problem with NBME scores is when we get a score, we either become too excited or too sad and it shouldn't be that way. Question yourself, why didn't you know this question instead of why you got a low score.

In the end, revise all the things you have read. You have already cleared your doubts by this time, so this last time you should be revising the stuffs. Last thing you want in your exam is not being able to remember the things that were on your fingertips the month before.

I hope this all doesn't sound too gooey. It has been a lot of fun all this time and I hope you do have the same while preparing for your exam. Good luck.

If anyone of you have any questions, I would be happy to answer.

Thanks a lot.

congratulations on your score
thank you for writing this article and sharing your experience.

im about to take NBME4, how much did u score on your NBME4?

iv heard psychiatry is a b*tch on the exam. is there an alternate source that i need to prep from?

also how tough were those abstract question? did u attempt them or left them on a fluke , i know people whov left them to the end made a fluke in the end and still ended up scoring 250+ (yes, im jealous cz those questions are such pain!!! )

were any questions sorta kinda similar to questions on NBME ?
( last one is a stupid question i know but i got a few from NBME on my step 1 a couple months back )

thanks in advance and best of luck

I got 263 in nbme 4 which was actually a whole month before my exam so, I actually underperformed.....but last stages of my preparation was quite messy so i am happy to even get this score and I didn't get any questions from nbme maybe one or two similar but that's it. I don't think you will get any questions from nbme...these forms are pretty old.

Psychiatry is a bitch no doubt about it n esp for Imgs like me because I simply can't learn their hospital ethics just by studying it in books....I was so stressed out from it that in the end that I even tried brs but to no avail....I would say just stick to the basics...you will come good in the exam.

About Drug Ad question, I was just happy that I was able to read them and answer in time....those questions are little tricky but you will able to do it if you manage your time well. you just have to read and read it...I don't know whether one should skip them or not because I got 7 of them n I don't think it would be a good idea to skip these many...rest is up to you. Thanks.

Hey,
Thanks for sharing. I notice though you have said that Kaplan videos for all except Surgery. Any alternative sources to do that from? Kaplan and MTB is sufficient theory wise?
Thanks and congrats on the score.

Thanks and congrats on the score.
this is an old post from 2012 , this person might not b available now as he must b doing residency now
letme answer your questions , i just took step2 n waiting fr my results , nbmes were in 250+
i donot recommend lectures now cz they are old , if any new lecs are available like the one of highyield mtb-2 , you can use them but try not to use outdated material
combination of Kaplan + mtb 2 + mtb 3 for minor subjects + uworld +/- kaplan qbank is sufficient for passing exam with 250 + score
