Default Don't give up!

Ok, so as the rest of the world waited for their results, I was doing the same. Now, I don't know where to start as I am really emotional right now. All through Medical school, I have been a good student. Not great, but a good one. However, studying for the USMLE made me a better person. It taught me about life and everything in between. Yes, I can say that today because I am putting things into place and have priorities in life. But, obviously no one wants to know about the philosophical aspect of this. So, here is what happened.

Firstly, I did take this exam before and I was miserable at it. I had a lot of other things on my mind and was just not focused for this. It kicked the life out of me to see FAIL for the first time in my life. I don't know what to do and I was contemplating between quitting this or moving on. I stuck to it, I didn't want to give up because I didn't want to wonder or the rest of my life if I could have done it or not.

So, I began this journey again, I had a lot of breaks and a lot of hurdles during my second prep. I was depressed, but I also kept it all in. I didn't want anyone to be worried about my life. It was a long dark year when people for a class lower had matched, when my friends were completing their second year and I was stuck. But, I kept swimming along.

I had the concepts, I just needed to deep dive. I needed to understand what everything meant and how to think in the exam. How to eliminate answers and how to work through a questions. It was one subject at a time and one day at a time. I understood not just the question but also the words in whatever way I could. I sat and googled, used wiki, asked on the forum and made sure I was just understanding why the answer was what it was and not the other one.

For materials, the first time I read Kaplan for everything. I honestly loved Kaplan for PEads and OBGYN. I watched the videos the first time so, i didn't do it this time. This time it was UWORLD and MTB 3 for everything. I loved the new MTB3 because it was just more sensible. I also used FA for a couple of topics that I had not covered in MTB. I did all the CMS for everything except neuro. Throughout this UWORLD was rock solid in knowledge. I did it subject wise and made notes along the way. Till the last day I just flipped through U world

NBME 6 244
UWSA 247

the time before the exam, I looked at pictures and just went through some basic knowledge as it had been a long time before my step one.

Exam Day
I went in and I kept telling myself to do one question at a time and just move on. I did exactly that. i didn't let one block bother my for the next or even the questions. I have to say, I got lucky, I got an easy form. My questions weren't as long as everyone said they were going to be and they were EXACTLY like U world. I had about 10 questions in each block that I wasn't sure of but, I used my knowledge to the best of my ability to mark and move on. My biostats was horrible, even during the exam I goofed up on that. I got a lot of easy questions wrong(15, I counted post the exam) It was a long wait till the results and I was driving myself crazy. I wasn't sure about the exam, but I also knew I did what needed to be done.

I passed and got a 241. I wasn't expecting this the second time around. I just want to thank a special someone who is up there and kept me going. Who gave me the strength to persevere and made me believe in myself. I want everyone out there who is struggling to NOT GIVE UP. TO understand your weakness and work on it every day. This goes for everything in your life. Thank you. Have a nice day

Congratulations to your score and more doc007, =)

Your post is very inspiring. I'm having a hard time as well as you did in a very similar way. It's an eye opener when you think you are the only one having this kind of concerns(quitting and doing something else), struggles and feelings of giving up sometimes...but i'm still fighting!!

Have few questions:
For how long do you prepared ck?
How do you study this material after you complete the understanding part and qbanks, do you just memorize it?

I'm having a problems with my score improvement after it doesn't go so high and i already complete: kln and mtb2. I don't know what to do to get it higher! =(

thanks

Hey jules07

Firstly, I am glad you found that you are not alone. trust me, I have been seeing people getting such high scores and always thought, what am i doing wrong that I can't seem to get them. Today when I opened my report and saw the score, I was speechless. IF I CAN DO IT, SO CAN YOU!

Let's start with the basic. Now, what was the difference between the first time and this time? Well, I deep dove into topics. Now, we know COPD and how it presents, but in the exam they won't give you COPD directly, they will say inc AP diameter, smoker, and then ask you what is their PFT value from the options below. Now, you need to know that it is obstructive and hence look for that on the PFT. I don't know if you get what I am saying. I think you need to know every word of UWORLD and don't take world as an assessment tool, read it, understand it and make it your primary source. Also, use wiki, google and everything you can. I really like the online med ed videos. I also did a bunch of question from medbullets. The more questions you do, the mor you understand the concept. I youtube some concepts because i didn't understand it.

Understand what your weak areas are. Don't get depressed with low score, use that to guide you through the process. make sure you know your weakness and work extra hard on it. UNDERSTAND the concepts, don't just mug it up. This exam is NOT EASY. I say that because it test you for your time management and your patience. IT will test you for your critical thinking. SO, work on everything. Do your blocks in time mode. Find a way that helps you retain your information. Also, make sure to take a break. During my study period, I took most weekends off. I just spent time with my family and relaxed. Did some questions sometimes.

ALL THE BEST! YOU GOT THIS!

You are one of the sweetest people I have met on any forum. When I was going through the heartbreak of my fail, you were the first to provide comfort and instilled hope in me. I am sincerely happy to see your progress and only wish you the best in residency. Best of luck! Hard work pays off =)

OMG, that is so sweet of you to say. I seriously believe that IF I CAN DO IT, ANYONE CAN DO IT. So, don't worry. I also believe in the fact that there is always a reason as to why things happen in your life. You have to go through it with a positive outlook and make the best of that. This is just an exam, an important one, but its a small part of your life. If you can come out of this being a stronger person, you have gained a lot.

So, take a look at a bigger picture, 10 years from now, all of this will look small compared to the other, bigger problems in your life.

If you need any help PM me. I'll do the best I can.

All the best, don't give up

P.S- you are very kind yourself. Thank you for all the wishes, really appreciate it. Keep me in your prayer!
