Default Step 2 CK fail - how deep a hole am i in?

Hey guys,i got my ck results today and got a 207 (which is 2 points less than a pass mark which sucks bad).Ive been through all the ranges of emotions since morning and i can feel the logical side of me set in(not completely though).

I had my nbme scores vary from 200 - 230,unfortunately for me i hit the lower end of that scale on the exam,so i can't really say it was unexpected i guess but i really did work hard with onlinemed.ed and dit(2011) and uworld and mtb and stuff but anyway the test doesn't lie and i obviously didnt do enough to make the cut.

I have more or less realized i have it in me to give it another shot,im looking forward to right a wrong, cause i feel like ive lost and i hate losing so i have to try again even if the prize is not a residency,i cant bare to feel like ive lost,so ive decided im going to study for it again, once i take a small mental break from things.

Now my real question to everyone out there is (assuming i do well - 230 atleast - next time),what are my chances to get a residency spot,in any field,FM or Psych or Pedia (assuming these are the non-competitive ones comparatively.
Some of my other info,
step 1 = 198(i know,im not exactly the brightest of students)
CS pass(1st attempt)
CK = 207(fail), 2nd attempt hopefully = 230+
YOG is 2011
Green card (probably the only thing i have going for me right now)
Don't have any USCE,i have 2 very good US lors(for IM) from 2 observerships i did.
I am willing to do extensive amount(6-8 months) of USCE and research after this exam (for now im thinking in psych or FM) cause those are probably my best shot at getting in right?

Or once i get my ecfmg certification, what else can i look at doing other than residency,is there an administrative/management side i can look into?
I am just trying to understand what my options are?

And now concerning CK,what do you guys think i should do? Take a dit 2014/5 course + uworld Q's + re do my notes OR should i be looking at course like "pass program" ?

Anyway,i think getting all of this out of me is like therapy in and of itself, but do tell me what you'll think.
Good luck to everyone applying this year.

Hey samren, I read your situation and sorry it happened. You were very close. Others will tell you to do uw + mtb over again but obviously uw is a must at least 1x through on random for the next 25-30 days. I

would not wait more than 1-1.5 maximum months to repeat or you will get discouraged and results will be diminished.

I don't think time will be spent wise with a video review course or even live course at this time.

Hope other people will answer you with good advice. Some may ask if your score report weak areas correlated with your nbme score weak points or was different?

Someplace there is still hope to get a residency. Just get ecfmg certified 1st!

I also failed this test by 3 points, got a 206. I still can't believe it.

I was just wondering what I should do now. I did U world twice and MTBx2. DIT? Step up to Medicine? I got destroyed on Surgery as well, any good books for that?

My dream was Neuro, Step 1 was 211 hoping to kill CK. Now with a fail, aiming for Psych. What are my chances with a 211 on Step 1, Pass on CS and a fail with 206 on CK for psych in 2017. Need a visa. Sigh .

Default Do not give up.

I know it is a very terrible feeling, but there is hope. What sucks is that you feel you have done everything, including all the tried and true study techniques but still to no success. You guys are close to passing.

The new exam pool came as a shocker, and the test was no joke. I think you were just unlucky because the materials studied was not representative of the real exam.

Samren, i would definitely consider a course, even though i think they are often a waste of time, but i feel there is no point in doing the same thing and expecting a different esult. The PASS program or DIT would be great. But i think the PASS program might suite you well so you are not at home studying by yourself, at least the pass program is structured that is if you plan on doing the live course. If you do, do take it seriously, and maximize every opportunity. Also redoing uworld notes will help you learn by re-writing topics that your might not be too familiar with.

Hey timexa, thanks for the advice.yeah 2 points is so frustrating cause if i paid more attention to 2-3 more Q's on exam day i would be experiencing something completely different right now,but anyway we learn and move on i guess.
Thats my plan as well but i just wanted to hear what everyone else thought would be best way forward.i dont plan to take more than 2-3 months, but i will have to work my ass off with USCE and research to land any kind of residency(which im doubting still exists with my credentials) but its always a no until you ask so for now ill try and study and get done with it quickly.
Exactly my thinking man,I want my ecfmg certification, after which if residency is a closed option i guess the next logical step would be MHA or MPH.sooner rather than later reality has to set in and i have to get a job.

Hey idio,i feel you man.I had hopes for IM but i don't think that exists for me anymore and for a lousy 2-3 points. Its ridiculous how important these exams are in shaping a physicians career in the US,but that's how the system is built to maintain consistent standards i guess.

Hey Dr.Knifehappy,I don't know if it was the exam pool, could have been i guess.yeah im kindoff thinking about it but lets see man,its a huge investment for pass program and i feel like if i had gotten a 170-180 then basics would have to be worked on and the pass program would be good. But if im at 200-205 then i think i need to sharpen certain aspects of my knowledge and refresh all concepts well and give a couple of nbme's and see if there's improvement ? is that a good plan? which is also why im favoring DIT cause they give you enough info in their course to make you pass the exam.
At this point i think a quick pass mark after 1st attempt and lots of USCE is better than a really good ck score(240+) in 4-6 months and little usce, considering my low step 1 score and yog etc.

So im going to start proper studying by 21st but i want to come up with a fool proof plan before i start.Right now i think im going to try and read high yield stuff in one weeks time then start with questions, see how its going(cause it has been 4 weeks since the exam) and then add DIT,take an nbme and plan accordingly, but i would like to think i can finish it by November end.

Anyway thanks everyone for their comments and stuff,i hope to come out of all this mental struggle and am hopefully better for it in some way,so good luck to everyone for their match this year or their 2nd attempts or whatever everyone's trying to do.These are good problems to have compared to what some people in the world are facing right now so lets try and be the best we can be(all this is more for myself than for anyone else so i don't want to sound like im lecturing anyone about anything).

All we can do is pick ourselves and try again. And make damn sure we kill it the second time around. It is heartbreaking and frustrating that they first increased passing score and then brought in these super hard questions. I hope they publish the new pool averages and SD soon.

hey Guys,
Im so soory to read your storries. One of My dearest friends is experiencing this disastrous situation as well; she was completely ready to apply for this match but she got her CK score and has failed it, her UWSA was245, Her step 1 score is 227, CS passed first attempt with high performance, research assistant in GW, and 6 month of US externship with strong LORs from great faculty members!! I wanted to ask you for your opinion, if she should retake the exam ASAP and apply for this match on January maybe or wait for next year? Or any other suggestions you may have for her. Just to let you know we are on F-1 visa and desperately need to get match.
I would really appreciate your answer.

-- the second thing is i just called ECFMG and talked to one of the representatives, i totally thing there must be something wrong with the question pool changing, because that happened to me too, i just didn't fail but my result was 211, and my UWSA was 244, my other friend result is 217, her UWSA was 248, there should be something wrong, and guys we put our life on this!! he suggested to write a letter and fax it to ECFMG (215) 386-9196 , with the title of "to whom it may concern, ATTENTION DAVID"
Do you thing we should make a thread and ask others too?

Similar thing happened to 2 of my friends, they both passed but dropped a lot compared to their nbme / uwsa, I have shown them this message, and hopefully they will message ECFMG too.

Hey everyone,Yeah it sucks big time for everyone that is going through this phase, but nonetheless we still have a choice with what we want to do and most of us in the process at this stage will choose to fight on.

I don't know about the question pool changing, and even if it did and was the reason for all these low marks,i doubt they are going to go back and change our scores,i mean if that was the case people who got 240's on nbmes and got 220 on the exam can write to them and say increase my score too right.

A recount of the score on the other hand is a viable option in my opinion, but after some research on forums,i haven't read one post that said, "MY score changed",it was always "i heard of ONE case where it did" even if that.

Anyway,i think we just have to bite the bullet and hit the books again,I have actually come up with a pseudo study plan and will start on Monday. For now i hope to get done with this exam by November end(max by December end).
Good luck to everyone.

I stick by my theory that they are either grading IMGs differently or giving us different exams.

It makes no sense, I have AMG friends who had lower scores than me on UWSA, Uworld and NBME who did well.

was the test hard or something... I find it very hard to believe when you score above 240 on nbme and end up failing....

Did you take the nbme online and timed?

hey guys,

I don't know if anyone's interested but my plan for now is to buy DIT2015 version and do it in the span of 20-25 days along with Uworld 1x a day then give an nbme and see where i stand(it has been about 5 weeks so hopefully a lot of stuff is still in my head).
After that i will continue doing uworld 3x and try and be more efficient in my note taking and concept understanding.

As far as everyone's posts of sending emails to ecfmg and recounts and stuff,i admire your passion to fight it,but as long as everyone's started studying and are on track to give it another go then go ahead and email ecfmg cause it cant hurt to try that route, and let me know what you'll come up with cause i would like to be a part of it as well.

This thread was just my personal way of sharing what im doing so im not trying to be disrespectful by saying "suck it up man,we've failed, let's not cry and lash out on ecfmg but let's look inward and get better ourselves".....but that is exactly what im saying(to myself as well).

If any one has any study suggestions, please do share.thanks.

Hi I also had a bad experience during my ck, the prometric prosector told me that take off my sweater was irregular behavior and that she will report my test, I freak out from that point of the exam, finally I passed, I do not know how, I was very nervous during the test, but a lot lower than my previous nbmes and uwsa.
