Default How can I fail!!

Hi Guys,
I failed with 197. (my last nbme was 196 but I did one more pass after that and took the exam without taking additional nbme)

I have been studying to CK for 5.5 months. I did 4 pass.
Ok, maybe It's been 10 years since I finished my medical school and I did 2 years of research after my surgery residency, things are not fresh but still, I studied 5.5 months. and my last UW score was 73%.
My exam was terrible, I panicked and people were typing very loud. Now I've been studying for step 1 for a month now (yes I took CK first then 1), I will take this whenever my nbme score comes to an acceptable range but how should I study again for CK? I have many alternatives in my mind, but on the other hand I don't want to be late for clinical fellowship applications which is by the end of december.
This exam is killing me!!!

I am so so sorry the exam didn't go as planned. I can only imagine what you must be feeling right now. I know how the exam went cus I just recently took it too. INDEED IT WAS HARD. But I must say you have to get back up and give it another go. Try to review your NBMEs after your take them, and also do UWORLD multiple times. Though I think having a Step 1 background can be of certain advantage to the exam. But since you are still fresh from Step 2ck, going to step 1 studies might make you forget things from Step 2ck. But chose what's best for you.

For the next CK round. I would advice, definitely going through MTB 2 & 3 at least once. Then uworld at least twice.

Hi Dr.KnifeHappy
Thanks for the comment and good luck with your exam result.
Well, to be honest even considering studying to step 2 ck again is frustrating. I've never read MTBs but maybe I should try them this time. I don't think I can give couple of months of studying to this again, so I'll try to keep it as simple as I can and let NBMEs define the course of my preparation I guess.
Maybe I need more practice exams and increase my stamina for long hours of test taking. Because I definitely lost my concentration back there.

Hey, I was there, I couldn't concentrate, my brain froze and everything was a blank. I was reading the questions and not really reading it, so had to go back and read the question again, lost time and basically failed. Just make sure you can sit through a 9 hour exam. It is not easy, it will test you in every aspect from stamina to knowledge. Everything needs to be a reflex because you will have questions where you will have to scratch your head, but make sure you are not wasting time on that. Use your NBME as your guide to your weak areas. Understand more than remember. Understand the clues they will give you when they want to point you in a certain way. Understand what they mean by using some words. Google, wiki, you tube use whatever you can to make it more fun and interesting. This is a better exam if you know your enemy. You already have the base, just make it strong and build on it.

Most important, live you life, take a break once a week and spent time with family or friends. Relax and do things that you like. It will all be worth it.
It's not the end of the world. don't let this define you and prove to yourself that you can do this.

Now, it is not an easy journey, no one said it would be. But, the point being you need to have set backs in life to really see what you truly want. SO, take it in your stride and just march along.

YOU CAN DO THIS, ALL THE BEST!

Thanks a lot Doc007,
5 minutes ago I suspended the UW test I was taking and started to walk around in the library. Aimless, with full of doubt myself. After reading your reply, I feel better
Last time I froze everything in my life, I think that was my biggest mistake because I kept postponing the exam date as it gets closer and I felt unprepared. So my performance significantly affected by this abstinence of worldly pleasures
This saturday afternoon I'm going fishing! Yeah, I'm doing it! Although I will only spend half of the day, I don't think I can take a full day off.
You are definitely right about everything must be reflex, there's no time for thinking about mechanisms. But I had a lot of missing part from the basic mechanisms, now I'm going to take step 1 and I feel missing parts are settling.
Who knows maybe I can score much better after 6 months of previous CK studying + step 1 studying period.

My score is not that low anyway, I can do this, I can do this!
