Smile Step 2 CK 246/84

Hi everybody,

Just wanted to share my journey through the USMLE Step 2 CK.

Let me start off with a bit of background on myself:

I am currently on third year of Med School, took Step 1 on April 6, 2011 and scored 207/86 on first attempt.

I wrote off my first attempt on the Step 2 CK on February 9, 2012 and received my score report on Wednesday February 29, 2012.

I was SHOCKED when I saw PASS/246/84 on my score report.

It felt bitter-sweet.

I always aspired to get a 99 on one of my steps... never happened and apparently never will.

I studied for 8 months. I used Conrad Fischer's Master the Boards Step 2 CK as my main guide. I read from Kaplan CK Lecture Notes as well.

First 2 months I used Kaplan CK Qbank ranging around 50-55%

I then did USMLE World and copied down every educational objective on a notebook.

I finished USMLE World with a 79% average and 94th percentile.

NBME 1: 360/197 ( 5 months before exam )
USMLE World Self Assessment: 540/228 ( 3 months before exam )
NBME 3: 620/258 ( 1 month before the exam )

All NBME's and USMLE world were done online.

I found NBME 3 easier than the real exam.

The real exam is doable but I considered most questions to be vague.. Questions were very long as well.
Right around the 5th block I was already exhausted.
On the 6,7,8 block, I just wanted to get the exam over with.
I had many Psychiatry and Neurology questions.
Drug Ad and Abstracts are much easier than the ones in USMLE World.

I wish my Step 1 Score was higher.
I am not sure if I can get into Surgery with these scores.

Feel free to ask, and thanks for reading

Dude you are kidding me about bitter sweet!!!! a 246 is Awesome!!!!! There is no such thing as a 99 any more, but for all intent and purpose (if it makes you feel better ) you got a 99!! LOL

Congratulations!!!
Regarding writing down educational objectives, is this like a sentence or two, and then you review it daily or weekly?

Gen surg? Its doable esp if you dont need a visa, do you have any surgery research? check your inbox in a few mins.

Also when you took NBME 1, how much of the Qbank had u completed, and how much of the reading had you done?

When you took the UWSA, at what point of your studying was this? Had you completed all of UW then?

Thanks!

Hi Lena, thanks for your response!

Everyone has a different technique for learning. Writing things down helps me analyze what I am 'trying to understand'.
So, when I was doing USMLE World, I dedicated a notebook for the 'Educational Objectives' which are usually a short summary/explanation (yes, 1-2 sentences) of what was being asked from the vignette.

I would then review the notebook whenever I had a chance, but I tried skimming through it weekly.

I did NBME 1 right after my membership with Kaplan's Q bank ended. Right around this time I was done with my first read of Master the Boards 2 (This took me about 2 months maybe, don't exactly remember, started studying on August... so around October )

USMLE World Self Assessment Thanksgiving/November.. I had already read MTB at least once, I must have done 500-700 questions from usmleworld and reviewed random kaplan lecture notes as well.

NBME 3 took place after new years, January 7,8, can't exactly recall.

And no, unfortunately I didn't get the chance to complete USMLE World. There were about 400 questions undone.

On my Score Report / Performance Profile I had a couple of crosses over the 'Borderline' shade for Obstetrics & Gynecology.

About the Visa.. I am US Citizen studying at a Foreign School.

Hope this helps, please let me know if could be of any other help!

Thanks for the explanations, it was really helpful. Great to see how your scores climbed as you went through UW! Looks like thats the major key, as I already knew.
