Default Basic a fib question

Hi there I have a very basic question about atrial fibrillation,

I understand the logic and reasoning behind anticoagulation, and cardioversion in unstable or newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation.

However, when do you rate or rhythm control patients who have atrial fibrillation. I can only find information on rate vs rhythm, however not on the indications for both.

For instance, if you have a patient who is symptomatic and has persistant a fib and previously failed cardioversion, I would imagine you would then decide on rate vs rhythm control depending on history and comorbidities.

On the other hand if you had a patient who also has persistant a fib diagnosed years ago (or paroxysmal for the sake of argument), is asymptomatic, and has a heart rate <100, do you simply just anticoagulate depending on CHADSVASC and HASBLED?
