Thumbs Up For IMG's, My CK story

Hi there medical colleagues in cyberspace,
These forums have helped me quite a bit and so I feel obligated to share my story. It's meant to be encouraging and helpful, not gloating nor pompous.

I studied for 3 months; USMLE Step 1 score was dismal, 200.
I studied for 1 month; USMLE Step 2 CS score was Pass.
I studied for 6 months; just got the good news USMLE Step 2 CK score was 235.

How did I do it?

Step 1, 2013- Good foundation in the core subjects in med school, I used Kaplan as my review source (did the 7 week course) + Pathoma + Practice NBME exams (My scores were 216, 210). I was disappointed with my actual 200. But whatever, a pass is a pass. P=MD.

Step 2CS, 2014- Used the FA and a study partner. We scheduled our exam on the same day in the same place. I highly recommend a partner. The LA testing center was really great- low stress, low key people, the actors were helpful and didn't pose too much of a challenge to get the diagnosis. Passed it no problem.I'll post a link to my review of my CS experience below...

Passed Step 2 CS- here's what I did

Step 2CK, 2015- passed 6 months post-graduation. This is what I really want to discuss. This is a beast of an exam. Especially now with the question pool adjustment, no one REALLY knows how this test is scored. No one knows what to expect. It's such BS. And believe me, I feel for each and every one of you who may have failed the CK. That test is brutal, unpredictable, and really depends on whether or not you get a set of questions that you can answer. It has nothing to do with how intelligent you are or how prepared you are. I've heard of plenty of high caliber students failing by a few points. If this happened to you, do NOT lose hope. Study for another few months, and you will for sure pass!!! These tests are meant to be passed!!! Thousands have passed before you and will pass after you! It's just the name of the game and you have to persevere and get through your rough patch. It will only make you a stronger physician. Keep the big picture.

Day of my CK exam I had 5 blocks of 44 questions + 2 blocks of 42 questions + 1 block of 32... Yes, 32. I've never seen that on an exam before. It was so weird. I had a whole hour to do 32 questions?? It was my last block too, which was a relief because I was exhausted. I left the exam feeling so crushed, which I've heard is the way you're supposed to feel. My exam had a really even spread of every subject per block, which is really good. Timing wasn't too bad but I had only 1-2 mins to spare every block... So just be prepared to not have any time to review answers. Pick what you think is best and move on. I had 2 stats questions that were sets of 3 questions grouped together. So a total of 6 questions related to reading a study and interpreting it. The other stats I had were 1 or 2 calculations of NNT and ARR.

Preparation:
- I passed all shelf exams during medschool
- OBGYN - Blueprints + Kaplan
- Medicine - Case files, paying attention in classes, High Yield Kaplan w Fischer
- Peds - Case files, FA for Peds
- Surgery - Pestaña
- Psyche - Classes + Case files

Sources:
- I purchased the High Yield Kaplan Review with Conrad Fischer that goes along with MTB 2+3.
- UWORLD qbank, BUY IT. It's everything. It's your primary source.
- I bought both MTB 2+3.
- 20 Comprehensive Kaplan cases with Conrad Fischer
- NBME self assessments (did 3 of them: 214 (7), 212 (6), 210 (4))
- 130questions sample test on USMLE website, got 78% overall
- I was roughly scoring ~78-82% overall every USMLE World block I did in the final month leading up to CK
- USMLE Step 1 First Aid, most recent version 2015
- Pestaña Surgery Packet
- University of Texas SOM Video series with Emma Holiday Ramahi shelf review (google it, she's awesome)

Order of operations:
1. I did the High Yield Video series while reading MTB 2 & making notes, first time around (took me about 21 days to do it thoroughly).
2. I completed all 2500 USMLE world questions, ~69% overall + made notes on every question/concept (my UW notes were like 50 pages long. Post your email if you want them, I'm happy to share) , first time around. (Took me about 6 weeks)
3. Re-watched the High Yield Videos while annotating the MTB 3, using it mostly for OBGYN and Peds (but I read the entire thing). (Took me about 10 days)
4. I re-read my UW notes and kept them in the car, so wherever I would go, I could read up on 5-10 questions for quick review here and there.
5. I reset my UW qbank and redid all 2500 questions (Took me about 1 month) with ~82% overall
6. I did NBME assessments 8 weeks before, 6 weeks before, and 2 weeks before my exam day. My scores were stagnant and I felt I wasn't improving at all (again, 212 on 6, 214 on 4 and 210 on 7). But I kept doing 2 UW blocks/day and getting 80s most of the time. Consistency is important. And take those NBME's with a grain of salt. CLEARLY they aren't super accurate. And I don't think they adjust for the new question pool/scoring system/whatever BS way the USMLE is testing us nowadays. Just keep going and make sure you're at least passing.
7. When I felt I didn't grasp a concept STILL, I'd go back to fundamentals. I'd rewatch my Kaplan Videos from step 1 in physiology but only the selected subject, which helped.
8. I kept doing questions until 2 days before my test. Eventually it was just 1 block/day for the ego boost and to stay fresh.
9. I went and saw the James Bond movie the night before my test with my family. Was a bit disappointed by the movie, but it did distract me from the test day for 2 hours. I allowed myself to review light notes and reading until noon the day before my test.

Key players in my Step 2CK prep = Conrad Fischer. I recommend him without any hesitation. You watch him enough times, you start to think like him. Even start hearing him chanting his little phrases in your head while taking tests.

I'm a firm believer that medicine isn't hard, it's just hard work. Put your hours in and you'll reap the benefits. YOU CAN DO THIS. If I can, anyone can. If you have any additional questions, I'm happy to answer them.

All the best and good luck in your studies! Hope this information helps someone out there!

And now, for that ECFMG certification application...

Smile First Positive Reinforcement I have read about STEP2CK

Hey, I have been having a really hard time even applying to do the exam due to some issues pertaining to my name. Now, after almost 8 months corresponding back and forth with USMLE and my university (yeah, I know it's crazy), I finally got my permit to do Step 2 CK.

I have been studying the Kaplan Lecture notes and it can be very tedious.

Good to know that your approach was totally different and yielded awesome scores.

I know that this post is rather old, but if you are still here, It'll be awesome to get your notes. my email is lukeashwin at gmail dot com.

Keep up the good work!

Luke
