Default Just received my step 2 CK score (268) and want to thank this forum

Hi everyone I am an IMG who took the step 2 ck on December 30th. I've always lurked on this board but rarely posted so I want to give back for all the help I received from this board. I studied for 4 months beginning with the Kaplan notes which helped me build a great foundation and turn my weakness' into strengths (OBGYN and surgery). After my first go of Uworld which I completed 2 months into my prep I scored a 84%. I took notes on all my wrong questions and all the little things I didnt know from my correct notes. I then did my incorrect questions and scores a 98%. Afterwards, I re-did all of uworld again and scored a 96%. I took my first NBME, 7 weeks before my exam scored a 255 on NBME 4. Then did NBME 7 three weeks out and scored a 270. NBME 6 five days out scored a 278. The Uworld assessment 4 days out and scored a 265 ( I think this is the highest score, not sure though). Oh and I did the free 150 about 5 weeks before my exam and score a 96% I used Uworld as my foundation for most of my prep. Oh and I did all the clinical mastery questions and score an average roughly of 90%. I'm pretty sure I understand all the questions from the NBME's and the clinical mastery so just shoot me a private message and I'll be glad to help!

On Exam day my worst nightmare came true and I didnt sleep well at all, only around 4 hours . I usually sleep 8-10 hours. So I was worried, but I was still confident and knew this was my moment so adrenaline and caffeine helped power me through. I'm lucky I'm a fast test taker and it allowed me to finish each block 15-20 min on my first go and was able to double check at least 20 questions each block. the first 7 blocks were between 40-44 questions, the last block was 34 questions ( I was able to double check and even triple check some questions on this block which I think helped out). I marked 5-10 questions a block too. The exam was definitely double! And if you understand uworld and the nbme questions inside out, you will do well! I thought 75-80% were either low difficulty level or medium difficulty, 15% were tough, and 5-10% were like wtf is this? Haha. I realized I made at least 5 careless mistakes after the exam which bummed me out a bit, so I've been praying for a good score since.. I ended up scoring a 268 on the ready deal so I was happy Feel free to ask me any questions you like. I'll be glad to help!!

Thank you! I forgot to mention if I needed any clarity on certain topic. Pap smear screening for example, I used uptodate. It is a very detailed source, but it helps fill in any holes!

Thank you!! All the Kaplan notes, just the IM section and EM section of MTB 2 and 3, uworld, uptodate. But I abandoned everything 2 months out with the exception of uworld and uptodate.

In terms of strategy know step by step management. You might be like oh crap this is MI! Let's cath asap (but was the door to balloon time 90 min or less, where is the closest cath lab? Should I give a tea instead?), but if it's inferior wall plus hypotension, you gotta give fluids first (RV infarction). Another example is oh crap this is definitely PE, gotta give Heparin (as long as there are no contraindications and BP is stable) before CT angio ( gotta pick VQ scan if renal insufficiency or contrast allergy). Sometimes you medically manage before getting an image , sometimes you do the opposite. Knowing the test of choice for everything is crucial (suspect kidney stone get a CT w/o contrast or U/S---pick this if pregnant). You gotta be able to critically think your way through the exam, and nothing helps more than uworld.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much I think I stated this in my above post, but I used the Kaplan notes to help me build a strong foundation. If you feel like you need someone to teach you the subjects ( I learn best from reading books) then I'd recommend the Kaplan videos. I started watching a couple of them, but I felt like I was learning way to slow with them. So to reiterate Kaplan notes, MTB 2 and 3 (only IM and EM), Uworld, NBMEs, and uptodate if you need to clarify anything (or just send me a private message haha).

Haha I think I mentioned these things above too, but I should have organized my post better. I'd say if you are an IMG you should dedicate between 3-5 months to the exam. I took roughly 4 months (8-12 hours a day). Yes, make notes on things you do not know. And keep going over them until they are en-grained in your brain. You can buy the CK vids on Kaplan.com. I dont have the videos unfortunately.

what is your way of solving a question ? did you read the last line and choices first? did you used to highlight the positive findings/abnormal labs ? in other word how can you be that fast in solving qs?

Default hey there

Thank you!!

I took 3 hours per block between doing the block and reading through the explanation on the first pass. I did 3 blocks a day. I think it roughly took my 18-19 days the first go. Keep in mind I read all the Kaplan notes before hand so I had a good foundation. The second pass I did 4-5 blocks a day and finished it somewhere between 10-14 days. The second pass is where I really started picking up some confidence and realizing little details I neglected the first time around. I tend to study fast in general, but speed isn't important. Whats important is that you pick up the concepts. You should be able to recite in your head the step by step management for all the big IM subjects (CHF, DKA, COPD, Pleural effusions, suspected septic arthritis, endocarditis, etc) ,delivery (when should mom have a c-section, expectant management, hurry delivery with oxytocin, etc)

Best of luck!!!

I always read the vitals, labs, and what the question was exactly asking. I've always been a bit of a fast test taker, but for this exam a lot of the speed comes from repetition and being able to pick out the most important info. You should be able to make a diagnosis with the least info possible ( For example: not needing every clue to know its CHF)

Congratulations on your great score.
I ve just started preparing for step 2 CK. I'm confused about using uptodate as a referrence cuz i think I'll start going through some unwanted details and thats gonna take away my time from prep.
What do you say, is it a must for step2 CK? Or how much do you think it helped you?

Congratulations on the great score! I hope my score is at least half good as yours. How long did it take for you to receive your score?
If I'm correct you took the exam on Dec 31 (Thur) and received score on the 4th wednesday after the exam (Jan 27), is that correct?
