Unhappy Need some advice

Hi, I am stuck with a decision. Here's my problem.

I have the worst step 1 score (215). For some reason I didn't want to give up. Moving forward, I am doing CK prep now and i dont see my self taking the exam anytime soon. (I know I need some really good score in CK. So, I am taking my sweet time)

I will be doing CS some time in march and have 3 electives as of now.

My options -

1) Take CS, do 2 electives and dedicate the time left for CK preparation, so that I can apply for this year match. (I know my chances of matching are slim)

2)Take CS, do 3 electives, improve my resume with good CK score & may be step 3 with few observeships/research. Which means, I cannot apply for this year match. (But I get to improve my resume)

I can use some advice. Please feel free to comment.

Thanks

P.S. I am an International medical student with no USA visa status of any kind

Depends on the place where you will be doing electives and what kind of LORs they will give you. If you're doing electives at 'very prestigious' place and they give you amazing LORs - you're set to match. if not, well, it depends what you value more - time or extra security.

I think your second option seems a bit better ?
By prestigious elective places do you mean Mayo/Harvard etc..

Yep. Generally, the strategy for match with average/below average scores is to switch focus from the scores towards other parts of application. You want to find people who will like you and will help you, no matter what are your stats. The strong LORs from the famous universities can significantly increase your chances of matching. Be smart when applying for electives - don't pick very competitive ones, KNOW this sub-specialty inside and out.
Research at prestigious universities can help, talk with PI about your career goals. Research requires much longer commitment than electives, however, from research you can get observer. Treat research as a pathway, not as a final destination.
