USMLEWorld USMLE World and Real CK Exam; How similar they are?

Hey previous step takers. Are the concepts in the questions in UW similar to the topics tested. More so, is there any connection b/w the two? Or will many of the questions on the step be from left field, and having had gone thru UW not help for these questions?

For ex UW question ID 1687....a question about clasp knife spasticity and they ask what part of the cross section (internal capsule) is the likely place affected in this pathology. Is there a chance a question similar to this will show up on the step, or is it a waste to even know more than what is stated in FA 2012 pg 450?

Thanks for your input!

Personally, I think the actual exam was harder than UW. sometimes I couldn't even finish my blocks on time as questions are much longer. but the concepts are still the same, very similar to uworld.

Usmle world is very effective for exam preparation. Doing U world is more than enough for the exam. The concepts asked in real exam are totally the same as U world and NBME according to my step 1 experience. i had to answer the locations on the CT Head and abdomen but only 3 to 4 quizzes in 7 blocks. I am doing U world for CK now...

overall, uw is pretty similar to the real test, but of course there are no carbon copies of any specific question! make sure you understand and can apply the concepts!

also, the more unique practice problems you think through, the better. doing both kaplan and uw is good, then you have about 4400 questions to do - try and make all your mistakes on the question banks, use them to learn and fix your weak spots, and then the big day (you vs ck) won't be that bad at all!

if your school is weak on the clinical subjects, beef up your knowledge with kaplan's wonderful lecture notes and lectures before you do the qbanks, and go back to your lecture notes in places where the question banks show you are weaker. this worked for me (got 254, took it a little over a month ago) and other people from the year above me also did a similar prep plan, passed and did well too.

good luck

Plz buy uw qbank and Self assessments!
if UWSA score is above 250, u are ok to sit the exam. if not , u have to repeat u world qbank again. I don't recommend Kaplan Qbank because the questions are extreme (very easy or very difficult) and not exam oriented.

just got back from my exam , it was yesterday

UW DID a MIRACLE FOR ME ! and you have to study every single word of it , even the wrong choices , even if you feel it's not important or minor ! i think it's amazing in prepping for main concepts

the problem with UW , it has short qs ... so i would advice you to kaplan , to get used to long qs , the qs in exam were much longer than those in uw , and there are some odd topics you will may find in kaplan not in uw , but again if you didn't have time UW IS THE BEST

you have to do NBME , 4 or UWSA , before you go to exam , and NBME is pretty similar to real exam in the distribution and the strange qs tested

good luck everybody

after reviewing your wrong and marked qs , do mtb2 in IM and PSYCH

mtb3 in surg , ped ,obg

review your UW notes in the subjects you're weak in
don't panic ,, focus on IM and Psych, ped ,, i had alot of qs in psych and ped

I personally thought First Aid CK was great. I know most people write it off but the new edition is much improved. Although, MTB 2 seems best for IM though.

Thanks for the advice. Appreciate that. Are you preparing for CK? Which lecture notes are you using for the preparation?

Hi,
Is it a myth or fact that U world alone can yield a high score? Can you tell me specifically how you studied from u world. Like, did you study the questions according to each subject in tutor mode or did you study the questions in timed mode? Also did you read the full explanations, even the wrong ones. (like if the answer is B, did you read the explanations for A,C,D,E?) . I plan on doing my first pass in subject wise tutor mode and then I plan my second pass in timed random, is this a good idea? Please give me more advice regarding step 1 prep. Thanks
