Default step 2 ck help

Hi, I am an AMG student, was not first pass for step 1. I want to prepare better for step 2 ck and do not know if I should study by myself or use a review prep course. What do you recommend? And what resources would you recommend for the test?

Hey drcm1987,

the most important thing before giving out any advice is to know how you're doing on your rotations/shelf exams. I don't know many AMGs who are taking a prep course as they barely have any time for that during most of the more intense rotations.

When are you planning to take the exam? What rotations have you already finished?

Hi max_volume,

I was planning to take the test sometime august-sep, hopefully by that time I will be done with 3rd year roations. I have finished fam medicine, Ob/Gyn and surgery. Currently starting IM. I have peds and psych afterwards. My shelf grades have been average so far I have read a lot that most people just use books and qbanks, but given my situation I'm not sure if I should use a prep course or not and what books could suit me better. So far, I was thinking of using my notes from the rotations, maybe use 1st aid or MTB and step 2 ck secrets, and Uworld.

In my opinion IM is one of the most important core rotations and a good shelf grade there should also help you with Step 2 CK.

If you feel like that either your knowledge base is too thin OR you want to get a preformed study plan, then go ahead and look into those prep courses. Avoid DIT, it's much worse for step 2 CK than for step 1. Haven't done any of the kaplan videos/lectures, so I can't say if they are appropriately preparing you for the exam.

Personally I found studying for the shelfs and doing UWorld extensively is enough to get a good score (> 260 for me). I made the mistake during my Step 1 prep to use too many resources. I didn't do the same mistake during my Step 2 CK prep and I'm satisfied with the results.

As you are an AMG and many people on this forum are IMGs, it may be better to ask on SDN for a second opinion.
