Default kaplan qbank or usmlerx ck?

Which has the best questions and explanations after uworld? kaplan qbank or usmlerx ck?

Is kaplan qbank or usmlerx up to date?

i recommend neither... i think doing uworld 2ck twice is sufficient. if you need another qbank, then i would add uworld for step 3. i think its easily better for step 2ck then either usmle rx or kaplans. but if you insist on choosing between rx and kaplans then Rx. i did them both and from my experience RX gets some basic questions right, whereas kaplans isnt good in any way.

Default dont do kaplan

kaplan has too much detail. It's not high yield.

that statement is misleading... kaplan does cover a lot of details overall, but it does NOT have enough detail per subject. that is, kaplan covers a very wide array of material, but rarely with enough depth to be helpful. thus not being high yield.

I never thought of using uworld for step 3. I know you didn't mean the CCS subscription but you can buy the MCQ's separately.

Are the explanations in step 3 uworld mcq's going in depth? I looked at some step 3 questions from their sample and they had a lot of referral and outpatient questions. The explanations looked like they were a little more succinct but I did notice some of the same information tables being pulled from uworld ck.

The only hesitancy I had with usmle rx is that I think it's written by medical students. Kaplan qbank, no idea who writes those.

usmleworld for step 3 has the same format as for step 2ck... with indepth explanations and all.

you can subscribe to the mcqs separately.

Would you then suggest and prioritize uworld ck + uworld step 3 mcq > usmlerx or does usmle rx have some merit to those basic questions? I sometimes noticed uworld doesn't cover a lot of that stuff and it's really a pain in the butt to find and extract that information from MTB.

i dont see many people making that suggestion, but i would indeed recommend it... uworld ck + uworld step 3 mcq > usmlerx. what i did was sandwich uworld step 3 between my first and second attempt at uworld 2ck.

i have to admit that i studied a ridiculous amount for that exam, including 4 qbanks (uworld 2k + 3, usmle rx, kaplans.. and a little bit of usmle consult)... but only the uworld ones made a difference on my exam. there may have been some easy questions from usmle rx, but its hard to say if i would have gotten those questions right anyway. i did first aid q and a before usmle rx without realizing that those questions appear in usmle rx.

i also used mtb 2 and 3.... but it proved to be a complete was of time. to be fair, theres no way any single book with that little material could be substantial on the exam.

How did you break all this down into a daily schedule? That must have taken months!

I would imagine that most people can finish maybe up to 3 blocks of uworld a day and even then, 132 uworld questions are very dense. I think there's ~52 blocks in uworld on ck. Maybe usmlerx is faster.

Did you do all those questions for any of the questions during your first revisions by subject or random, timed, tutor?

i studied for around 6 months, 8 hours a day, taking sundays off. i did 200 questions a day, read about five cases a day from the case file books, and some other material. its a lot and i think i would have done just the same if i cut out usmle rx and kaplan qbank.

Thanks for those insights Kruno. I appreciate all the comments you had given to my questions! Both yours and max_volume's viewpoints are much different than the typical reads from what I've searched around here.

I've never experienced the case file series. Do those have good correlation to uworld's management algorithms? Which of the books from that series did you go through?

no problem, im just glad to help. i read 8 of the case files books (internal, surgery, pediatrics, emergency medicine, neurology, ob/gyn, family medicine, and psychiatry).

i cant remember any details in the case files series that conflicted with information in uworld. there might be a couple, but generally the books do well to supplant uworld.
