Default How I got 259 in step 2 CK

Hello,
This forum has helped me a lot so I would like to share my experience with step 2 CK.
Just got my results yesterday- 259 .
Let's start from beginning.

I read a little bit of kaplan obgyn till September 2015, found it too long to be able to complete.
Then I started reading MTB 2 and 3 from September.
In October, I purchased uworld subscription for 6 months.

I started doing MTB and uworld subject wise.
First of all, I completed obgyn read from MTB 2 and MTB 3.
Then I started doing uworld for obgyn while simultaneously reading infectious diseases from MTB.
By the time I finished obgyn in uworld, i would have finished reading infectious diseases from MTB2, so that I can start doing uworld for infectious diseases. This way i finished MTB with uworld first time. I read MTB 2+3 in subjects other than internal medicine section.
Didn't do well in uworld first time. Overall ~67%.
This whole process took 3 and 1/2 months. I studied for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. I took weekends off.

In January 2016, took exam date of february 16.

Took NBME 4 offline (the easy one I guess) - got 28 wrong. Estimated score ~237.
Freaked out, took next available date, March 4th.
Then I started revising MTB2 and 3 with uworld second time -Random, timed.
Second time uworld percentage ~89%.

3 weeks before the actual exam, I started taking 2 NBMEs ( to sim a full length exam) on the same day of the week as my exam day. (Friday in my case).
Week 1
UWSA - 254
NBME 3 offline ~ 238 (got 27 wrong)

Week 2
NBME 6 online- 252 (19 incorrect)
NBME 2 offline - found it too old, vague- didn't even bother to check the score. LOL.

Week 3 (one week before the actual exam)
NBME 7 online - 233 (38 incorrect) WTF??
fred 2 sample questions - 90% correct

Freaked out again after seeing nbme score. Found out that many had a bad score in NBME 7 and did well in actual exam.
Decided not to worry and not to delay the exam. (right decision I guess)

Last 2 week prep.
Found MTB not much useful, didn't bother revising it for 3rd time. Came across another book step 2 secrets. Really good and compact book, I would highly recommend that you read it first, even before MTB to have knowledge about high yield topics.
I actually finished that book in the last 2 weeks before my exam. Most of it I read in last 4 days before my exam.
I used uptodate for some of the stuff I found confusing.
Especially pulmonary embolism, pap smear, HBV treatment are explained very nicely in uptodate. It is a good source, use it more often to get higher score. In short, any confusion? go directly to uptodate.

Didn't study at all the day before my exam. Played games and chilled out.
Didn't study on sundays till the exam. One day a week is needed to chill out and relax a little bit.

Exam day March 4th- Friday,
First block was good, not much weird questions. But after that, every block had some questions in which I didn't have any idea what to do. Held my nerves, did't freak out (I knew that this type of questions are gonna come, and there was nothing I can do about it), chose the answers I found most appropriate and moved on. If you do that, you won't have time issue.
I had average 2 to 4 minutes in each block to review my answers, yet couldn't review all of my marked questions. I managed to review 2 to 6 questions in each block. Took break after every block. I got 5 minutes of break time left after the exam, in which I did survey. Didn't have any energy left after it. I think simulating the 8 block exam 3 times helped me a lot to build up my endurance.

Overall, exam was doable. Not easy of course, but doable. Trust your instincts and your hard work will pay off.

What would I do if I had to do it again
I would start with step 2 secrets, read it whole and then concentrate on uworld. Uworld is the key in this exam. No book comes even near uworld.
While doing uworld, I would read relevant topics from MTB 2 and 3. This way, it would take less time to finish MTB and more focus would be on uworld. (especially for slow readers like me)

Thank you.

thank you for sharing your experience

I am really amazed that you got that score with 3.5 months ! Congratulations! Do you think 3.5 months is really enough
When did you graduate ? and what was your step 1 score. If I may ask.
(Because I did not do well on step 1 , and I would like to know if step 1 and graduation year has big influence on step 2 ck score)

and since you are a slow reader ( like me ) , how many hours did it take you to finish solving and studying 1 block of u world ( memorizing and taking notes from the explanations) !

thanks inadvance >

Thanks. If you don't have uptodate subscription, there are some offline links available on google and some torrents have it too. Be careful, it is illegal though! There are some id-password combinations on google that may work sometimes.
Yes, uw is the key for step 2ck. MTB 2 is too vague and superficial. It doesn't have many things that uw does.
Step 2 secrets is good because it has important topics and easy to finish. I read it mostly in the last week of my prep for the first time, still I found it easy to read and grasp. It's a good revision book.

MTB 2/3 has covered high yield topics and describes well about the next steps in the management. I think it prepares a scenario in our mind so that we know what test to do next or what treatment to give next.

Step 2 secrets is a good revision book, easy to finish and covers high yield topics in q and a format. It is better than MTB to start with, so that you can get some idea about what to learn from uworld. MTB is a good book too, I recommend reading it, but don't spend too much of time with it.
Actually, don't spend too much of a time with books. Do lot's of questions and you are good to go.

Obgyn was pretty straightforward i guess. Psych had some weird questions. Obgyn- MTB + uw is enough i guess.
Psych - MTB + uw with some help of FA step 1 is good ( I didn't read FA step 1 much though)
Main thing in psych is to be able to differentiate and diagnose personality disorders and other mental disorders. Make a note of differentiating features between similar disorders, so that you won't get confused in the exam.

You are welcome!
Ethics i didn't read anything extra besides uw and MTB. I think these are enough for that.
Biostats- FA step 1 + uw. That's it. No need to do anything else.

Thanks.
Actually i studied for approx. 5-6 months. (Sept to Mar) It depends on your speed. I know someone who did that in 2 months and did pretty well. It's all about your confidence. Whenever you are confident enough, take it.
My step 1 score was 248. But I don't think that made any difference, because I took it in November 2014 - more than 1 year before step 2 CK. I finished med school in 2014.

UW - I used to do 1 block a day + 20 pages of MTB. That's it. I had hard time finishing this too on many occasions. I think uw 1 block i took 6 hours.
Lately i paced myself and managed to do 3 blocks every 2 days.
2nd time uw - I did 2 blocks per day.
