Vascular Varicosities and Deep Veins?

Hi all:

Can someone please explain why in patients with symptomatic greater saphenous vein varicosites, the presence of an occluded deep system must be ruled out? Why deep occlusion is an absolute contraindication to vein ligation?

Thank you!

This is because the superficial veins might be dilated because the deep veins are thrombosed so if you are going to stop this critical bypass you will effectively kill that limb!
