Group talk Step 2 Beginners Lets gather here

Hi guys,
I got my step 1 result way back but trying hard to get back on track for Step 2 ck. My friends for this steps are Kaplan LN, MTB 2, Kaplan Qbank and UW.
I want to be realistic and hope to finish it in 4-5 months.
I have been slacking for last 3 weeks and seems i close books sooner than i open them
Lets make this thread so that we follow each other on track and gain momentum.
Currently i have finished Preventive medicine from Kaplan and my next target is endocrinology.

I started prep 2 weeks ago. Finished Kaplan OB/GYN lecture notes and now on to IM notes. I have the same problem, I feel like I have been only skimming the notes. It might be my only Kaplan reading because I am planning to take exam in Aug or Sept.

Default Same here!!

Hi! I am in the same boat! It feels like I'm reading a newspaper!!
But being serious, I'm trying to take the test in August to be ready in time for September. I've read Kaplan's OB/GYN, Surgery and now I'm reading IM along with MTB as I finish each section in Kaplan. My question is, should I bother with the remaining Kaplan books (Peds, Psychiatry, Ethics)? Or just skip them and keep reading from MTB and start doing a QBank? My plan is to do Kaplan and UW. But in reality, I don't know if I'll have the time...

Can I join too?

My exam will be 10 weeks from now and i can say Im still not focused. Im like studying 3-4hours a day and sleeping for 9-10hours a day
the rest is either surfing or watching movies.

Im only studying MTBCK + Kaplan Qbank right now.(Uworld after)
its been more than a month and Im still not done with IM' Cardio, emergency medicine and prevmed(I started with IM first).

Im worrying if I can finish the rest of the subjects within those weeks. :S

My study plan is like:
1) Watch videos related to specific system + annotating the MTBCK
2) Qbank but only questions related to specific system(Ill go random on uworld later)
3) while reviewing the answers, Im reviewing all possible step1 related to the question and making flashcards (This is the tedious part but surprisingly it makes me retain more information)
4) Move on to next system/subject

I guess it will be more fun if we have like a chat conference via skype/imessage where we could throw questions anytime in the day.

Can I suggest something?
Start with Kaplan Qbank if books are boring.
Because when you read the explanations, its like reading the kaplan notes/MTB-CK. Also Q-solving will keep your assess stuck in one place.
Once you get in the mood, you can then start studying from Kaplan notes/MTB-CK and MTB-3 for the second revision.
Finally UWorld and NBMEs. (you can put in extra rounds of revision as per your comfort level/available time)

This is how I started

Yes i think it will take around one month......other books are thinner, hopefully they wont take time.Actually i am able to concentrate more when i watch videos............and fischer is good you will love those also the faces he makes .
The difference from step 1 videos are that you dont have to add much info its all given already in the book.

i am thinking of next year but the wait is so long for usmle journey .....it just sucks ,what do u all think about it ?

its like lot of questions
From my step 1 days i have never enjoyed passive reading so i included kaplan Qbank in my first read.It helps in a way that you know how the question can be framed in a particular topic in your first read itself.

Sometimes i think this year but then i think it wont be possible with cs and all.
Dont want to take chances as its once in a life time opportunity.
Being an IMG CS scares me.............so lets see only time can tell if i am able to apply for this year.

hey usmle2011 and K06100
MTB-2CK IS NOT ENOUGH!!! Its okay for IM but as far as the other subjects are concerned its a bummer..I've been reading MTB-3 but I dont find that 'too good' either. U'l have to supplement with Kaplan notes or some books from you final year med school. There are quite a few topics that I have encountered in kaplan Qbank and UWorld that havent been explained in either of the above books (eg parasitic infections). Check out the Washington Manual for therapeutics or the mini-Harrisson. I havent taken my CK yet so I cant say for sure but I do find Kaplan and MTBs a little insufficient.
Its my point of view.

For medicine Step up to Medicine is a great resource. For peds/ob/psych I'm using FA + MTB 2. Secrets should cover a bunch of HY facts. Goljan for other topics that need brushing up. Uworld to tie it all together and put down in MTB 2 for annotating.

Studying for CK is definitely more involved than Step 1 since there isn't a de facto source like FA but as long as you know what you need, it can be easily done. I'm going to unbind MTB 2 and add notes to it like I did FA 2011. Few friends of mine did this strategy and they killed CK (240+).

Would you say that MTB 3 for everything other then IM is sufficient? I'll be using MTB 2 for everything else, in addition to Kaplan LN + Videos.

Nope..
Thats exactly what I don't understand. Majority of the people I have know use this strategy.
I myself have been using the same strategy as yours but I feel a lot of topics are being left out. Hence I plan to read my final year subjects from my med school notes as well... atleast for the 'what is the most likely diagnosis part' questions.

Hey guys, I'd like to join this group.

So I'm going to start off by reading kaplan lecture notes followed by MTB for the same subject. I'm going to be using USMLEasy as my first question bank since its provided for free from my school. I plan to do the question bank after I have read each subject in its entirety. However I have a couple of questions,

1) I have the 2008-2009 KLN. Are they any different from the most recent edition and will they suffice?

2) Are the the kaplan videos necessary or the lecture notes are detailed enough?

Thanks.

Default Ca I join your progress?

Hi! Been reading Kaplan notes but still haven't got my studying phase yet. I just started yesterday with doing atleast 8 hours a day yesterday. I have been lightly reading Kaplan for the past 5 weeks and finished IM, Surgery and OB-Gyn with some videos. Some of it are just repeating what's in the book so I tend to skip a few.... WHat are your thoughts about the vidoeos?

IM Cardio and Hema videos are really good. Nephro is ok still give you a few points how to approach a case that was not mentioned in the book. But GI and OB are just repetition of what is in the book without any additional info. I don't know if you see it that way. LEt me know your thoughts so I can adjust looking at these videos. THanks.
I am currently starting UWorld OB-Gyn and doing 2nd Kaplan read. Hopefully we all get our phase pretty soon....

Good luck to all.

Hi i have started thinking mtb lacks so much info i have to annotate it so much form Kaplan LN and then from Qbank. Currently doing gastro questions and i feel why the kaplan people have not discussed gall bladder disease when they have so many questions in their bank.
Also there are so many errors i keep them emailing and they admit their mistakes today infact i had a question in which the answer option they provided was not even in the question

It has around 2200 questions.
Depends if you have completed your first read then you can take it for one month but subject wise along with the first read would take time in that case 12 months would be best.
