Smile RammyJ5 Step 2 CK Experience (261)

I’ve been a passive user of this great forum for some time now; reading people’s questions and comments.

I must acknowledge that learning about past experiences and receiving advice from other users was definitely beneficial to me and thus I intend to give my experience with the USMLE step 2 CK.

First of all, I am an IMG. I studied medicine in a non-English speaking 3rd world country. I used Kaplan Lecture Notes as my basis. I used their videos, lecture notes and qbank inside out. I didn’t start with the diagnostic test they have because after I saw the first couple of questions, I got depressed and decided not to continue with it so as not to deter me mentally.
The best thing I did in retrospect is reading the lecture notes, watching the videos of the corresponding chapter read and then doing the qbank of that chapter in untimed tutor mode to consolidate. I made notes of every answer I got wrong or in which I guessed the answer. Kaplan CK qbank is picky as hell in their questions and sometimes ask questions you may see as unrealistic or even make you doubt in what you have already learned. They have a lot of tricky double-edged sword type of questions. Sometimes they may present a simple case of appendicitis but due to one’s past experience with choosing the ‘apparent’ answer and getting it wrong, it makes you think 3 times before picking it.
I ended up with 70% after all questions were done once. I didn’t do them over.

After all this was done, I went through all the wrong-answer notes I made, reviewed USMLE Secrets and Crush step 2. I didn’t like crush. Seemed too simplistic. I preferred secrets. Now it was time for questions galore…. I completed Kaplan qbook, first aid qbook (the first aid step 2 ck review book is terrible. Didn’t read it), and step 2 mock exam. Step 2 mock exam doesn’t really ask questions in the usmle format but it’s a good way to know what you know or don’t know and see presentations of different types of questions. I finally went on to usmleworld qbank. Completed it in about 10 days I think. All timed and random. Finished with 75%. I must say that this qbank is much more realistic in comparison with the real exam and aren’t as anal as Kaplan in their questions. Their assessment test predicted 240.

I got 85% in the usmle free practice test. I did the nbme tests which predicted 244 (average of all 4). So now i could go into the exam with some confidence. Besides, i was tired of reading.

Did my exam 3 weeks ago and seemed rather easier than I expected. I guess its because I had done so many questions and seen different ways of asking the same thing that once I started reading a Q, I knew instantly what they wanted to ask. I ended up finishing each block with 15mins extra time in each. For some reason it seems to me that the mid-blocks.. 4,5,6 were significantly harder than the rest. Maybe it’s just me. By the way, the couple of days before the exam… I only just reviewed notes I had made. Nothing else. No questions nor books.

I did come out of the exam knocking my head on a couple of questions I believed I got wrong. Didn’t torture myself though. Well, maybe just a bit….

Score came out this morning…. 261.

Its all good!! Its all about determination!

i only became of MTB2 only after i was done with all the questions and all that. i went to a free kaplan even with C. Fischer and saw it. I went through it and seemed very nice. I wasn't about to spend more $ and something i wasn't gonna need since i was already at the end but i must say i did like what i saw and definitely will purchase MTB3 when the time comes.
