Thyroid Thyroid Cancer Epidemiology

As mentioned in Kaplan IM lecture notes almost all types of thyroid cancers are more common in women compared to men. On the other hand just at the end of that page it states that thyroid malignancies are more common in men. I can't understand this? What could be the truth?

Arrow This is what they mean

They mean that when the patient is a male and is having a thyroid disease then it's more likely to be thyroid cancer while when you have a female patient then it's more likely to be other thyroid diseases such Grave's for example.

But that does not conflict with the fact that all thyroid cancers and Grave's disease is found more commonly in females.

Wink Another example of the same pattern

This is just like GI hemorrhage.

Upper GI hemorrhage is by far more common than lower GI hemorrhage across all ages. But when you have an old patient chances are likely it's a lower GI hemorrhage because angiodysplasia, cancer, polyps, and diverticulosis are more common in older people.
