Default CK experience

Hello. I am writing this short ck experience without going into much detail so that hopefully others will find it useful and learn from my mistakes. After scoring an average 241 on step 1, my goal was to score 250+ on the exam so I would have a shot at good programs. But I ended up with a score of 238, not terrible but nowhere near good. Though I am truly glad I am done with the two steps, I am gutted that all the hard work did not pay off to the level I had hoped. I guess I cannot make excuses but I had taken the exam with a terrible mindset after struggling through health issues. Looking back if I have to be honest with myself, I am not really surprised with the score I have received. I don’t think I did anything particularly wrong during my preparation. Scored 255+ in nbme 4 and 6, 229 in nbme 7 (which I guess seriously rattled me though it shouldn’t have). My only advise to future test takers is to not merely focus on the preparation materials as everyone does (I am sure everyone knows what to read) but also have a proper mindset before taking the exam, which I think is more crucial. Hopefully, I did not screw up enough and have a chance for 2017 match if I apply broadly to a good mix of programs. Good luck to everyone and see you people during the interview season!

You sir are a lot more than numbers, numbers are a poor indication of potential and your scores are good anyway. Congrats on being done and best wishes.

Not sure why IMGs have this mind set that scoring in the upper 230 won't get you matched at a decent program .. i graduated with and personally know over 50 IMG that have matched in the last 2 years with these scores and lower.

Keep your head up , YOU will MATCH .. You have good enough scores to get interviews , once you get to that point , scores do not mean much to program directors .. ITs you AS a person is what Matters . Because guess what happens to that score report printout on 1st day of residency ? it's not even good enough to be used as toilet paper to wipe our behind after a bowel movement . lol

Bottom line Scores get you interviews , YOUr character , personality and the vibe you send out on interview day is what gets you the spot .

Lol I completely agree with everything you said. I personally know people who scored in 220s and matched into decent programs. But you have to admit, scores above 250 will open up a lot of doors (especially for IMGs). I am just disappointed with myself for panicking in the last moment and not scoring up to my potenial. But what's done is done. I know I have a good shot if I plan well and apply smartly.

I agree with you , it does open up a lot of doors , but also closes a few up . I've been told by 2 program directors , that most mid level programs will not pick and rank high scoring students .. Reason because they know these guys have better chance getting into a better program and the odds that they ranked their program in top list is low so they would rather not waste time and rank students that will most likely commit to their program. So i believe you are in the happy medium spot , unless you have a bunch of red flags that require you to score high to cushion those flaws .

Scoring high for me is a personal .. I lost 30 lbs of muscle studying for this damn test and Med school so i better get 30 points above Avg to make up for it lmao

No problem man , My advise if your score does come up ... DO NOT make excuses , just simply say i under performed on that day , i know what i did wrong, I've learned from it and will make sure it won't happen again . DO not be that guy that lays down a bunch of excuses , like... my dog died , i had diarrhea , my red bull was expired etc.. lol
