CT Scan Brain Abscess; CT with or without Contrast?

from kaplan medicine

Quote:
Contrast on a scan of the head is indicated primarily for the detection of cancers and infection.
When an abscess or neoplastic process is present, there is some disruption of the blood-brain
barrier, causing some extravasation of the contrast, which is visible as a contrast, or "ring" -en-
hancing lesion around the mass.
so what we order when we suspect brain abscess?
CT with contrast
CT without contrast

i think blood will act its own contrast and so ans should be CT without contrast !!! ;-(

for anything to do with blood === NO CONTRAST.

anything to do with infection/tumor/any other lesion you want to outline=== CT WITH CONTRAST.

Best is MRI for brain abcess though it has typical appearance on CT scan,we choose CTscan as it is cheap s compared to MRI,but best is MRI...--reference- KLN surgery
