Psyche SSRIs or MAOIs to treat atypical depression!

m confused here.....

pg 510 MTB-CK under atypical depression , treatment is SSRIs or MAOIs , but choose SSRIs due to better S/E profile.......TIP given says usually MAOIs are correct answer on USMLE STEP 2 CK for treatment of atypical depression......

what to choose then ????????

If the question asks for first-line treatment, choose SSRIs.

If the patient has failed treatment with SSRIs or if SSRIs aren't an answer choice, then choose MAOIs.

The key distinction is that MAOIs are only really used in atypical depression. In "typical" depression, you'd use SNRIs, bupropion, TCAs, or trazodone before going to a MAOI.

What it means that SSRI are undoubtedly the DOC for Atypical Depression and if both are among the answer choices then choose SSRI.
MAOs are hardly ever prescribed in real life but are the right answer on USMLE STEP 2 CK for treatment of atypical depression if they are among the answer choices (without SSRIs as the answer choice).
