That depends on a lot of factors...

What was your Step 1 score?
How good are your rec letters?
Where'd you go to med school?
How is your research background?
What is your specialty choice?

If your application is otherwise strong, a 220ish score on Step 2 won't kill you. But if you're really banking on doing a good job on Step 2, then you might benefit more from a high score than you would from early ECFMG certification.

Another thing to consider is how much you think you can improve in another couple of weeks. How long have you been studying? How has your improvement been so far?

That's important because you should pass Step 2 by late September at the latest, which means that you'd have to take it by early September at the latest. And that means that if you postpone, you'd only get another month to study... that might be useful if you've only been studying for two weeks, but it won't mean much if you've already been studying for several months.

Hm... I can see why you're thinking about pushing it back.

How have you been doing on your other practice tests? It could be that this one was just a fluke...

If you've been studying full-time for 2 months, you probably have an idea of how much you've improved and how much you can improve in the next month or so. If you think you can go up by 20ish points, I think it'd be a tough decision. But if you think you might only raise your score by 5-10 points with another month of study, you might be better off applying early with ECFMG certification.
