Medicolegal and Ethics Taking consent for pregnancy test!

A 15-year-old girl is brought to the emergency department by her 20-year-old sister because of a 1-week history of fatigue, nausea, and abdominal pain. Menarche was at the age of 12 years, and her last menstrual period was 3 weeks ago. She has not had vaginal discharge. She is sexually active, and she and her partner use condoms inconsistently. Her temperature is 37 C (98.6 F), blood pressure is 110/60 mm Hg, and pulse is 95/min. Abdominal examination shows mild bilateral lower quadrant tenderness. Before a pelvic examination and a pregnancy test can be performed in this patient, consent must be obtained from which of the following?

A) The court
B) The patient
C) The patient's parent
D) The patient's sister
E) No consent is necessary

B. The patient

Almost every state in the United States allows minors to consent to their own treatment in matters of sexual health, i.e STI testing and treatment, contraception, pregnancy testing.

I don't see any confirmed status of STD, neither pregnancy.
the patient had menses three weeks ago, she may have a new mense in the next few days(pregnancy is not confirmed yet).

she doesn't have fever or vaginal discharge, and there's bilateral tenderness which could be PID and not necessarily STD.

and the patient is minor, so I would go with parent's consent.

Thats the point, there are 3 possible scenarios here.

Normal Pregnancy.
Ectopic Pregnancy.
PID.

IN all 3 scenarios MINORS can decide everything from counseling to treatment, so if you want to get a pregnancy test in a minor then you should ask the minor.

So as long as there is possibility of pregnancy, and since the test is related to pregnancy, we need to have the minor's permission then .

Good point, thanks .
