Unhappy Failed with 192

Hi, I just found out my result 192-could not believe I have failed
I plan to retake it at end of September
(I hope in a month and a half I will get a decent score-it will be tough in such a short time)
That would mean I would get results on Oct 17 the earliest. Do you think it is too late to apply then?Any advice would be really appreciated.

Very sorry to hear that.
However, my advice will be to find out first why you failed and take it from there. We are here to help you figure that out.
It is not a good idea to rush in again since you will need a really good score and rushing in just to catch the match is not such a good idea.
But again, it depends on your Step 1 score as well as your status (IMG v/s AMG, Visa status)

Thanks a lot for your reply.
Well I am IMG but US resident. Finished med school 10 years ago, did PhD and then only cancer research . Step1 score not that great 211.Quit my job in January and studied 4 months for step1 and 2 months for step 2. So the scores will not be my strongest point.I am interested in applying for Path only. Do you think I have any chances this year? Again thanks!

I am sorry to hear that. Did you do any assessments before your exam?
Thank you.

hey man, i think that your step 1 score is decent for path. It's hard to say it depends on the person.
If you work on step 2 full time you might be able to make it, but do your best and let the NBME decide, not the us.
I would say that you have to aim >220 in the NBME to be sure that you will win the exam considering that you scored 216 in the UWSA and failed.
I would say, do MTB and UW and analyze your exam results, where did you failed and also target those weak points.
If you are having problems with concepts, then lecture notes and videos are the answer for you. If not, you just have to master the material.

Sorry to hear about ur results. We have heard about many cases who failed yet they matched. U are a US resident and it has been 10 years but u have done research and you are not outdated. I would also suggest that you read MTB and UW again. Then take NBME and then decide. U should keep in mind that NOW YOU NEED good scores to Match. So keep a higher target score like 240 and above..I can totally understand your situation. It must be hard to accept this. Good luck!!

Hey, just got my scores back today and I failed with a 187/73... kind of came out of the blue. Did UW and MTB all the way through and took a practice NBME (~575?). Thought I had it down but clearly something didnt work out.

Step 1 was 225, decent amount of time studying, just messed up. But youre not the only one out there who has to go through this. Today has been rough but if you really want this (knowing what you went through as an IMG, I understand) you have to get back at it and kick a** this next time through.

Best of luck, it is a blow and it does affect your matches but, from what I hear, it is still possible. We both just have a few more bumps ahead of us

That's quite a shock and really hard to believe. Did you have a terrible exam day or what?

Even in the OP's condition, a 216 on UWSA does ensure a passing score, but I guess you guys had a bad day.

i seen 195 UWSA getting a 213 on the real exam. I hope you all do well, I think you just had a bad day.

Path is easy with a PhD, dont stress do the exam and apply to Path.

In all honesty, it felt fine. I was on schedule, well rested, not too stressed (but we know you may be affected by stress even when your heart isnt racing).

And im usually a great test taker... so yeah. Bad day. Or my 50/50's went all wrong, or I didnt know the material as well as I should've. Regardless, the end result is a fail.

To the OP- we did make things harder on ourselves, but that test is in the past. The only thing you should be taking away from it is what to fix, not regretting it. Its too close to ERAS and all of that to dwell on it.

Now to fix this hole in my wall from when i got my results...

Well, applications begin in september on ERAS (or that is the usual time places open). Say you re-study/take review courses/have clerkships going on, youre put back a month or two, meaning your application will have a failure under Step 2 CK (assuming you apply that early).

What I meant was that this time spent on re-taking step 2 will land you in the middle/end of the application process. As IMG's, we're considered liabilities already. So there are really two options- 1) retake step 2 as soon as possible and apply later, or 2) apply with the failed CK (which is a bad idea). This is all assuming a 2013 match.

I am sorry to hear I am not the only one.
I have an ambitious plan -I want to take it at the end of September and apply when I get I get back the results. Of course I may change the exam date if I feel I am not ready. But I hope I'll be...
I think it's bad to apply with a failed test, right?

One question-do you think that the new all in one option (meaning no prematches) will help? I hope I can still be able to get interviews if I apply in late October.

@dolhan16: What specialty are you gonna apply for?
Good luck to both of us!

Sorry to hear that, but hang in there. Its a tough patch and I realize that today. My step 1 score is similar to that and I just got my result today, have managed to JUST scrape through with a 201. Quite unexpected from my nbme score of 205 3 weeks before the exam. I'm guessing the 50/50s screwed me over as well. I am applying this year for Internal Med. Anyway, there isn't a way that I can change that, but this becomes the weakest thing on my cv.

As for your Step 2. I would strongly suggest you give it enough time and pace yourself to do well. I tried rushing things last year, as well as this year and it didnt really work for me. So I would say you should try not to make the same mistakes. However, if you do feel ready by September, then that is something you yourself has to decide on. You've spent 10 years outside clinical medicine, but I suppose you must've learned quite a bit and accumulated a vast share of knowledge which will eventually help you. Its only this barrier which you got to cross over and figure out what to do. So just knuckle down and plough through my friend, it'll definitely work out!!!
Best of luck! Keep the faith!
