Heart Hemochromathosis and dilated cardiomyopathy?

How is it causing DCM dilated cardiomyopathiy?

Restrictive makes sense, dilated - hard for me to understand.

Thank you.

Iron is a toxin just like Alcohol. It's accumulation damages myocytes and leads to fibrosis just like post MI dilated cardiomyopathy.

Quote:
Excess iron is hazardous, because it produces free radical formation. The presence of free iron in biologic systems can lead to the rapid formation of damaging reactive oxygen metabolites, such as the hydroxyl radical and the superoxide radical. These can produce DNA cleavage, impaired protein synthesis, and impairment of cell integrity and cell proliferation, leading to cell injury and fibrosis.

CK puts an extra "item" for you to apply all the dry mechanisms into clinical scenario.
It only seems that connecting two dots is a simple task...

Thanks man!

I think Iron isn't the only thing that can cause it, other toxins that release free radicals will also lead to dilated. (According to Goljan).
