Smile Step 2 CK Amateur/Beginner

Hey everyone!

I just finished step 1 and even though it's way too early I have to buy the books for step 2 before I leave.

I've searched past threads and according to the majority this is what I came up with:

-MTB 2 for internal
-MTB for everything else
-UW

and that's it!

Am I missing anything?
Could someone tell me the general guideline of how to study step 2.
What's the current trend regarding step 2 prep.

Thnx!

First of all Mabrouk on finishing step 1!

Well, the conclusion I came to in the end was, the majority of people use some sort of combination of some -or all- of the following sources:

Books: KLN, Kaplan videos, MTB 2, MTB 3, FA
Questions: Kaplan Qbook, Kaplan Qbank, USMLE world

I believe that whatever plan a person decides to go through during his prep, there is absolutely no need to use anything other than those listed above.

-Regarding MTB 2/3, it is being used instead of FA. I believe that more students today use MTB than they do FA.
Personally, I am using it the same way i used to use FA in step 1. As a comprehensive review book that -towards the end of my prep- will contain everything I need from annotations and so forth.
MTB 3 is used for Obs/Gyn, Peds, Surgery.
MTB 2 is used for everything else.

-Regarding KLN's and videos, there's alot of discussion and "controversy" surrounding the matter.
Alot of people are coming out and saying that if you have recently and successfully finished step 1 then there is no need to do kaplans.
Others are saying that doing kaplans -even though not a must- can be very helpful for your prep.
Only you can decide what makes you comfortable.

-Regarding question banks, try imagining how important questions were in your step 1 prep and multiply that by a hundred!
I feel that the key to step 2 is doing as much questions as you can.
Of course, UW is by far the most important question bank (and most probably the most important studying source). Mastering UW is key to success in step 2 and more important than anything else. Your prep doesnt truly begin until you start UW.

-----------------------------
Just so you can see a sample, this is what I'm planning on doing (I've started a month ago but with research I'm barely studying every once and a while):

-1st read:
MTB 2/3 with kaplan videos (without the KLN's).
Annotating from the videos, anything i see useful, directly into MTB.

2nd read:
MTB 2/3 with UW.
Annotating and taking notes, onto separate pages and sticking the pages in their appropriate sections in MTB (I cut the binder and 3-hole punched it).

3rd read:
MTB 2/3 review (now containing annotations and notes from the videos and UW).
----------------------------

Mwaffa2a!

thank you thank you thank you ..
the most beneficial post I read about preparing for step 2 .. You have no idea ... you solved all the problem !!

I was confused because some of my friends keep saying Kaplan is a must .. and there is no need to a review book which I didn't get it.
from my experience from step 1,FA was the most important source to memorize and collect the information needed to solve the questions. beside that I really don't have time to study Kaplan notes .. they are too much..

on the other hand .. I got benefit from the kaplan videos as a comprehensive source .. and guided me to what the exam is all about .. I couldn't read one paper without referring to the lectures videos ..

from my reading to other experiences, it was obvious that mtb is better than FA according to step 2 .. again, the problem was that the new edition will not be released till the middle of next month ...

now that you are saying that mtb 3 is better in some subjects I guess Ill start with it till the new mtb 2 will be out .. doing 2 hours kaplan videos in the morning every day and taking notes on these two books is the best idea..

thank you again for your time.. wish you the best in your preparation and research .. you'll do great !
