Smile mbbs2010 Step 2 CK 248 - Experience

started step 2 prep a few weeks after step 1 exam.

KNOWLEDGE BASE

first was KAPLAN .. good .. detailed read for all subjects once (even saw some videos)

IM - added the kaplan extra relevant stuff to MTB 2 (during 2nd read of Kaplan)
after that.. only MTB2 till the end of the prep.

Peds - added whatever was high yield and extra from kaplan book .. into a note book.. n then stuck those pages (system wise) into MTB2
(so had all the stuff in one place)

Surgery - just read thru the clinical vignettes in the kaplan Surgery book twice.

OBGYN - read thru kaplan once.. along with dr sakalas videos .. and then made my own brief notes for high yield stuff. (barely 10-15 pages long)

Behav and PSY - didnt even bother reading. step 1 stuff was more than enough to go thru this. (was also my highest scored subject along with medicine on the actual test) Dr daugherty is kinda hard to get out of ur head once uv heard him!

Used MTB2 ONLY for IM. NOT THE OTHER SUBJECTS. I found it NOT ENOUGH.. hence stuck to the notes id made from kaplan

QUESTIONS and REVISION

did kaplan qbank -- about 60% questions --- avg % was around 65.
Uworld --- 2 times over (entire qbank) -- 71% the first time. and 89% second time.

DIT videos -- only watched these cos beyond a point everything was getting repetitive n found myself getting bored n lazy.. so instead of step up.. used MTB2 with it and added the extra stuff that he said to MTB2.

Free 150 91% (1 week before test)

NBME 4 3 weeks before test .. something around 215 predicted .. frankly speaking its outdated... so wudnt rely too much on the nbmes any more. but it did serve the purpose of freaking me out... so i worked a little harder!

UWSA 4 days after NBME 4... predicted around 245 i think.
Frankly was much much easier than the actual uworld questions. and NBME.

so in the end it was primarily MTB 2 (with all the added stuff) and uworld

EXAM
was long and traumatic
frankly came out feeling i wud fail.

was less tired than step 1... but the questions in all were much much harder than step 1. answer choices were very close.

did the first 2 blocks non stop.. and then took a break after every block..
question numbers varied from 36-45 per block

drug add and other new questions were very easy. just read thru the add once in detail and u'll get there. (left these for the end in every block)

time was a big issue. some blocks finished about 5 minutes in advance. and others i was short of time.

(dont remember much cos it was pretty long ago.. gave my test on the 3rd of august! so almost 2 months now)

if anyone has any questions.. or needs any help .. feel free to either post here or PM.
good luck with everything guys.

---------------------- EDIT---------------------------------------------------

just adding a quick note here... this stuff wont take u more than 30-40 minutes.. and helps solving alot of questions on the actual test.

hope it helps!!

what to revise from step 1 -- (stick to FA/ medessentials.. which ever one u read during step 1)
read the PSY section from FA.
Immuno deficiency diseases like Brutons/SCID etc (just the table from FA)
Glycogen storage diseases
Neimen picks and gauchers.
Biostats from FA

good luck to everyone.

Thanks and congrats on a great score.

I have always appreciated your frank and honest advice.

I think your step 1 threads should be made into stickies, since they offer excellent advice.

MBBS2010 Step 1 Exam Experience

To anyone who "failed"

I especially like the part where it says "FA Is rubbish" since so many people have fallen victim to the misconception that "if you master FA for Step 1" then you are golden.

I wouldn't say FA for step 1 is rubbish. It is more a guide of what you should know, at a minimum. For AMG's, or anyone studying soon after medschool classes, it will make sense. being an old grad, the first time I opened it, it did not make sense at all. I had to use other sources, eg BRS, RR, etc, but I mainly concentrated in those books on the material in FA, which I then annotated thoroughly.

Thank you for sharing your experience mbbs2010!
Just one question: How did you approach that which everyone talks about... I mean, the questions being really long. Did you read the whole question beginning to end or did u skip to the last line and then skim through the whole question paragraph looking for key words to help u answer?

Thanks

i meant the questions different from step 1.. to CK.. the new ones added (although i think that was a while ago now) .
the drug ads and abstract questions

u will go thru them when u do uworld. dont worry about them for now. ur just in the beginning of prep!
good luck with everything

well it really depends u know. ALOT of people give CK first. specially if they are IMGs .. for the same reasoning as you.
so u gotta decide what u think is right for urself.

however quite a few of the questions on the CK are pathophysiology etc.. and personally i thought step 1 helped me prepare for CK in alot of ways.
also since the step 1 was much harder than ck prep.. i pushed myself alot to get into the sync of how ur thought process has to be to solve a MLE question.

but then again. that is my personal opinion. please see what suits u best.
there is no right or wrong order in which to take the tests..

good luck

1- i didnt hv very many long questions. most of them were 7-8 lines long. and very manageable.
so dont let that bother you too much.
(theres already enough to stress about for this test.. dont let these small little things freak u out)

2- for the occasional.. and very rare.. 1 page long questions.. yes i did read the last line first.. n then read the ENTIRE QUESTION WITHOUT SKIPPING A SINGLE WORD .. and only then look at the answer choices (already had one in mind by the time u read the question).

PLEASE DONOT SKIM through the question.. SMALL DETAILS mentioned in the middle / 1-2 words here n there WILL CHANGE THE ENTIRE PRESENTATION and hence the NEXT BEST TEST/RX!

SIMPLE SOLUTION -
when u are doing uworld.. make sure u do it in RANDOM TIMED MODE of 45 questions.

trust me.. by the time u get thru 2000 odd questions in uworld.. in the timed mode.. your brain will be trained enough to think that way. so the real test wont be a problem

hope that helps.

Great score... congrats.
for my prep it took me about 4 months.
i went into step 2 CK right after my step 1 - didnt take a break.

wanted to take another 2-3 weeks to take the test but didnt do it for 3 reasons:-
1- was already burnt out towards the end.. cos i didnt take a break after step1 so i knew if i went on my performance would go down.
2- wanted results before september 15th (but that didnt work out! lol)
3- had CS planned.

advice -- DONOT PUT A TIME LIMIT ON URSELF. take as long as it takes for u to feel ready and for ur uwsa to show u are ready. Dont rush into it, the exam score sticks with u for the next 7 years --- so dont worry about minor stuff -- doing well on it is the most important thing!

PS -ur uwsa should be around 10 pts higher than the score u want -- for safety sakes.

hi congtarulations on your awesome score. all the best for your days ahead.

You said do MTB 2 only for IM. I wanted to ask you so you think its totally ok if I skip KLN IM completely? I took a 2.5 months break after step 1 and man its really hard to start now.

id suggest reading the notes atleast once.
(but thats a personal opinion.... i dont know if doing ONLY MTB alone works)

Congrats on such a good score.
I just took my exam one week ago. Wanted to ask you that how many questions per block did you get wrong. If you have any rough estimate about it?..

Bcz I am so confused about how Did I do. My three blocks went well. 3 blocks I marked 10 to 12 questions which I wasnt sure about. And two block went avg?can you give any righ idea about your experience.

Thanks

well there were some blocks that were ok.. and some blocks that i had more than 15 questions marked....

so i cannot really say!!
cos the feeling is very very subjective - in the moment you might doubt urself or be confident... and it is really that which decides whether u "mark" a certain question or not.
personally i think that in that moment of 40-something seconds... it is next to impossible to have a clear mind and really analyze if you are doing something right or wrong.
..

when i went back to these questions i had marked.. in alot of them i didnt change answers... and i realized i had marked them only cos i was being paranoid!!
also in alot of them i agreed with the reasoning i had the first time i solved them..

there were only 1-2% of questions where i had maybe overlooked a fact which i noticed when i re-read the question and changed the answer.

the number of marked questions DOESNT equate with stuff u get wrong..

(in my last block i did the first 15 questions and marked ALL OF THEM!!! and i am not kidding about this!
then i panicked... then took 2 deep breaths.. and started doing the block backwards --- from question 45 to question 1.. and still didnt change a single answer from the 15 i had marked!)

I know all this sounds super crazy... and although it sounds next to impossible to do after a usmle exam the only feedback id give you is to JUST RELAX. ITS OVER!!! fretting over it isnt going to change the result.

wait for the result. pray that its good. and work towards other parts of ur overall application.

oh and also ... CONGRATS on being done with it!

I agree. Its really really hard to rememeber anything on this exam. I marked a lot. I was also paranoid that I didn't read the question properly. But at the end, there is just not enough time to figure it out.

Thanks for you input. I had very similar experience as you. I just hope I pass. CONGRATS on your awesome score.

Congrats on your great score. I just started studying for CK after getting done with my step 1 last week. Pretty confused about which resources to use. Lots of people say that MTB is a very incomplete book. What is your opinion on MTB v FA/Step up etc. Also, how essential are the Kaplan videos along with the notes?

Should one start going through Uworld along with your first read or should one complete at least one read before starting UWorld? Did you read only KLNs during your first read or also go through MTB alongside?

One more thing, I have 2010 Kaplan notes (blue cover). Do you have any idea how much new info will be in the latest ones?

Would be very grateful if you could reply.

Do Kaplan first read. Videos are a good idea for systems that u think u are weak in.

Then the second time do Kaplan and add the knowledge and extra stuff to MTB
along with this do uworld

After this u can complete uworld with MTB only

No need to go back to Kaplan again.

U can do the old Kaplan notes as long as u supplement it with the LATEST VERSION OF MTb cos it will have all the updates.

Good luck

try amazon. btw the kaplan books off amazon are a little expensive.. so if u can get an older edition (maybe 1-2 years old) from somewhere i guess it still works.. BUT ONLY AS LONG AS U GET THE LATEST VERSION OF MTB 2 FOR CK TO CO-RELATE IT WITH.. COS FISCHER UPDATES HIS BOOK EVERY YEAR.

like iv said in the original post... do Kaplan for basics.
then MTB 2 for IM revision

and Kaplan for peds, obgyn, psy, Surgery.

around 3.5 months

no specific number of hours in a day -- just as long as it took me to finish what i had planned for that day.

i used 60% of Kaplan Qbank (like i said in the above post) -- but i DIDNOT FIND IT USEFUL.
so i suggest doing only uworld.

i saw almost all the videos.. except for psychiatry and behavioral sciences.
and in surgery i did only the clinical vignettes given in the kaplan book.

I only did the stuff mentioned in the post above.. from FA for step 1.
nothing else.

so i will not be able to comment on whether to do goljans book or not.

Default Qbook very necessary?

Thanks for your helpful post/thread mbbs2010 and congratulations on your brilliant score!!!
I have been doing the Ck KLNs, do you think its ok to skip the kaplan Qbook and just just do UWorld only after i complete my first read of all the subjects?

i think it should be fine if you do only uworld
do it more than once.

i frankly did not find kaplan qbank very helpful for CK.
(it is great for step1 and step 3 but a little outdated and weird for ck)

good luck with prep!
