Planning Starting my CK Prep (About time huh?)

Hey everyone,

Long story short: I delayed my prep by almost a month!
Why? I was focusing on my Clerkships.

Anyways, It's about time I start my prep for the CK, so here goes nothing ...

Sources:
1) Kaplan Videos
2) KLN
3) MTB 2
4) Kaplan Q-Book
5) U-World

My plan:

1) Watch Kaplan Videos (starting with Psych)

2) Read KLN along with the videos and add missing information to MTB.
(This will be my first and only read of KLN. It will also be my first read of MTB)

3) Do practice questions subject-wise from the Kaplan USMLE Step 2 CK Q-book.
(Finish all the videos + KLN + MTB first read + Q-book by January 2013...realistically speaking. I do have my Clerkships along the way.)

5) Start UW + 2nd read of MTB. (this should take me about 3 months)

I'm aiming for April-May-June time period. I am also planning to take my CS between March-April so I'll be using First Aid for that.

I'll use this thread to update my progress. Won't be doing that too frequently; may be twice a week. It's good to finally open the books and start studying. Feels like Step 1 all over again! Finally, I'd like to wish everyone a good luck in their journeys! I see a lot of familiar names from the Step 1 forum, so congrats to everyone who recently passed Step 1 Wish me luck!

Suggestions and advice are welcome! Thanks

I would suggest do uworld at the beginning ,then watch the kaplan videos +MTB
then again do uworld + MTB lastly do uworld wrong ones(that u got wrong the second time)

and skip kaplan lecture notes

uworld is the key and we IMGs do the mistake of doing it at the end

when u will watch kaplan videos after doing uworld ,trust u will absorb almost everything .
with step 1 knowledge u can do uworld ,just do not care about the scores ,if u proceed this way .

So how long do you suggest I get U-World for? Its been about 3-4 months since I studied ANYTHING! I feel like I need to hit the basics first before I start a Q-bank. Should I not worry about that?

Also, DocSikorski said in his thread that he started scoring better after he went over Kaplan Lecture Notes...or something along those lines; that doing KLN and then UW really helps ?

I am just worried that if I start with UW and MTB, I might have the basics down too well and then I'll score low. What to do ?

You have a solid plan.

MTB is a review of a review book series (KLNs). My suggestion is to do a thorough read of a good comprehensive source (KLNs/FA CK/SUS2)> In my opinion the KLNs covers the most topics as compared to others.

My Plan would be:

1. KLNs +/- Videos ( However, I found them to be MOST useful to clear the concepts since they test the concepts-you might know everything but if you can't apply it , it's no use).

2. UW+MTB 2 & 3

3. UW for review

You might want to read MBBS2010 thread since I found that to be most useful thread so far.

The plan that I am proceeding with is:

1st read: MTB 2/3 with kaplan videos (no KLN's) -annotating anything missing
2nd read: MTB 2/3 with UW -annotating extensively and religously
3rd read: MTB 2/3 with UW -review
NBME: plan accordingly

The videos with the MTB as a guide will get you the basics.
I just finished endocrine and am half-way through cardiology and I'm loving it.

You can take uworld first for 2 months then buy new for 1 month later.

I was just saying ,I am at the end of the prep so I think uworld Questions shouldnt be just done once or twice rather U have work on each question so as to build your concept well .However everybody is different ,you may do the way you feel is comfortable ,I was just giving my opinion .
Its all about basics ,if your basics are very strong ,you can read kaplan and u can absorb a lot ,for me reading kaplan has no effect .Again it depends on person to person depending on background knowledge .
people on this forum follow others ,but they forget the fact that the others basics might be very strong .many people start with 75% on uworld ,its not because of kaplan notes or any book ,its because there background is very very strong .(background I mean their 5 years of med school)
All I am saying is I am a very average student and for me the method I told u is the best .final decision is yours .
U can attempt uworld in the beginning to build your base ,this is what I am saying and do not care about the scores . because then when u will watch the kaplan lectures u will know what is important and why it is important.
btw AMGs too work on uworld for more than a year.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I am using the KLN and Videos together. I'm also taking notes in the MTB. I think that should be a good plan! I'll keep you posted. My goal is to finish all of Psych (from videos, kln and mtb) by Thursday next week (10 days). If that goes well, I will celebrate/reward myself that weekend

I had a question though regarding the ethics/epidemiology/bio statistics chapters that are at the end of the KLN in psych books. Are there any videos for those chapters/subjects ? I couldn't find any in the set that I have. Thanks.
