Smile Ayman Qasrawi's Step 2 CK Exam Day Experience

My USMLE step 2 exam experience
Exam date: 19/Dec/2012
1st I studied from Kaplan books and UW
The exam is really really exhausting, take 1 or 2 days off before your exam, DON'T study till the last minute ! Some examines with me studied till the last minute, this is wrong !
Sleep very well before the exam, sleep early and wake up early at an exact time every day 1 week before your exam. YOU DON'T WANT to go without a good sleep.
I slept at 11 o'clock and waked up at 4:30.
Take some snacks with you, there is no cafeteria. Water is present there.
SKIP the tutorial, no need to open it, you will save 15 min of break.

The exam
---------------
I had 355 questions: 4 blocks of 45, 3 blocks of 44, 1 block of 43.
In general, the exam is similar to UW in style and length. Study UW very very well and you should understand every small word of it ! It should be the last part of your study plan.
UW & UWSA are ENOUGH for the exam.
Be prepared: in every block there is 3-4 questions which will be from hell ! You should prepare yourself that you will face questions you have no idea what they are talking about.
Drug adds were very very easy, I had 2, and every one had 2 questions
I had 1 research abs which had 3 questions, 2 of which I had no idea what the question was talking about.
Biostat questions in general were easier than UW with a similar style.
I had like 15 derma questions, all were pictures but easy, so make sure you know how derma disease look like (I used to look on google images while studying derma)
There are a lot of ECGs/CTs/XRs/MRIs/etc, so also make sure you can detect common thing on radio.
In general, the exam is harder than UWSA

The break: I used only 42 min of my break. I solved 2 blocks then took 15 min break, then solved 2 blocks then 10 min, then 5 min between each two blocks

I will write a detailed experience after receiving my score report.

I will be happy to answer any question

Thank you for posting your experience
Hope you get great score:sorry:
I have a couple of questions:
i would like to ask about the # of Qs did you mark in each block, and did you come back to these Qs, and How did you manage your time in the exam?
What was your UW overall %? and also UWSA? Did you take any NBMEs ?
Thanks

Thanx a lot man
I marked 4-5 questions in most blocks, and marked may be 12 questions in one of them. I revised only those which I marked then ended the block. Actually managing the time was not difficult, I scanned the question rapidly to reach the diagnosis because there are many useless information in the question. In general, I would say if you don't have trouble in managing your time in UW (timed, mixed) you will not have any problem in time management. If you don't finish the blocks in time in UW, then you will face time problem.
UW mixed, time, 1st time is 84%
UWSA 800 (265+)
Did not do any NBME

Wow amazing scores
In your opinion what is the best way for using UW? and best time for doing UWSA?
And how to deal with forgettable topics?repeated them, or reading from different source, or what?

That's how I studied UW: I started 2 months and 10 days prior to my exam after I finished Kaplans. I solved a block then went to the explanations where I used to spend 6-7 hours on each block writing the information that I don't know. I used to write 6-7 pages on a notebook. After I finish the writing process I study the notes twice. So basically I did not move to the next block until I studied the notes twice. Then I start the next block ... After I finished all the blocks I revised my notes then did 2/3 of UW questions again till my subscription ended. Then I did UWSA 1 week prior to the exam. Then I revised my notes for the final time.
I say you should study your notes till you memorize them by heart because most of USMLE questions are based on UW.
So the key is repeating & repeating everything !
Sometimes you don't need even to know everything about a certain topic. For example in drug intoxication when you see "injected conjuncrinvea" the answer is marijuana !

Did you mean that you are not studied any more from KLN or MTB after you started UW?

I did not use MTB.
Actually no need (and no time) to open any book after starting UW (except if UW is discussing something that you don't understand).

You are more than welcome man, actually the same is true with me ! I got depressed last month because of many people saying exam is is very difficult and very different from UW and Kaplans
Good luck with your study and your exam

Thank you so much for writing about the Exam.
How long did you spend on your Kaplans? You replied in my thread that you did Gynae and IM twice, right?
Secondly, where do you recommend we do ECG's and CT's from? Did you do them from a particular place? I want to ace the ECG and CT's cause I'm not that confident in them.
Lastly, how much time should I put for UW? I will be doing my internship starting Jan and I just started my prep. So my exam will probably be end of April max, inshAllah. And based on your opinion, I want to do UW thoroughly. Good luck on your score, seems like we're about to have a high achiever on this forum soon, inshAllah

You are most welcome
I did IM/peds/Gyne twice, surgery once, and psyche 1 and half (did not complete the second time). Kaplans are good as a baseline. The gyne book is really good but I hate it and had to do the cervix chapter like million times in order to have a good grip on the algorithms. In general I think the 1st read needs 3 months, the second read requires 1.5 months. The important thing in Kaplans is that you don't need to memorize it, just know the books in general.
My preparation started during my 6th year, where I studied Gyne and Peds. After I graduated I took a 2 months break and started again by mid of July. Then I did IM twice and then each book once.
I started UW on 11/Oct, so I needed 2 months and 1 week before my exam to be fully ready
Thanx for your wishes and good luck in ur preparation

Regarding ECGs/CT know the common things: heart block, MI, pericarditis, AF, V-tach, VF, torasades, WPW, etc. I used a book when I was a student called the only ECG book you will ever need. Anyway, there were like 10 ECGs in my exam, and all were common things.

Regarding CT/MRI also know the very common things. UW is very nice in them

Actually no need to anything other than that, you can either do Kaplan qbank (which I did not do) or to take your exam earlier if you have a good UWSA score/NBME score. And make sure you have read every small word in UW No need to revise anything from Kaplan.

I see this is your last step, so take your time, no need to hurry
You can use one of the NBMEs now to assess your progress. I think your UW average gives a clue, as I had a high average I knew that my preparation is going well, so I did not do an NBME.
Regarding UWSA, it is based mostly on UW, so the best time to take it is after you complete UW and review your notes. I took it 7 days prior to my exam.

Sorry to hear about that, find out why did you fail and work hard you can get a high score. Regarding drug adds they were very very easy so don't worry about them (much easier than those in UW).
Regarding the research I left it to the end, I solved all the questions then returned to it, I suggest reading the questions before reading the research. Anyway I found it vague and had no idea what 2 of the questions were talking about. They are 2 questions out of 355 !! So don't worry.

Regarding the research I left it to the end, I solved all the questions then returned to it, I suggest reading the questions before reading the research. Anyway I found it vague and had no idea what 2 of the questions were talking about. They are 2 questions out of 355 !! So don't worry.

No problem Dr. Douaa
Actually these questions were added to UW only recently, since they were introduced to the exam I think in 2011, so even UWSA lacks these questions. Still, I advise you to subscribe with the online UW, since many new questions are added and many guidelines have changed.
Regarding the adds the best thing as I said is to read the questions first and then start looking for the answers, mostly you will not read everything, you will first just scan the add rapidly looking where the answer is, then you will read carefully the section where the answer lies. It is true that adds take a lot of time, but remember that the block that contains adds is a shorter block.

Default regarding UW notes

Can you please tell me how you made notes from UW? were you selective in making it? i.e. only noting what you didnt remember or got wrong ?
or you made comprehensive notes of every single question?
Thanks

Actually I write the notes that are new to me, or the notes that I may forget later on, there is no point is writing something that you already know. Still, there were some completely new subjects for me (e.g. coccidiodomycosis, I have never seen cases of it and it is not present at all in our community). In these subjects I used to write a comprehensive note.
It is important to make your notes as concise as possible so that you can review them easily (I made 300 pages of notebook)
