Unhappy How can I get 230

Hello there.

I'm an IMG from India, and I have my USMLE Step 2 CK exam in exactly 2 months from now.

I started my preparation in July, with the Kaplan books and videos. I've gone through them over and over, 4 times now, and in October, I started with USMLEworld Qbank. I had an average score of about 70% in Qbank, which correlates (based on other people's experience) to a relatively high score.
But just a month ago, I gave UWSA, and scored just 201 (3 digit). Since then, I've revised my books again, and gone through the Qbank answers and explanations. In a day or two, I plan to take a NBME Form 4 test, but I'm really very nervous about it. Score of 201 and that too on UWSA, 3 months before the exam. And now just 2 are left.

In my Step 1, I again didn't do good. I scored 194. And since I'm an IMG, it is VERY important for me to get a REALLY good score in Step 2 CK if I want to be matched. The thing is that I am usually prepared, do well on Qbank, but when it comes to the exam, I end up scoring less. :'(

Just for the record, I went through Master the Boards once, but not seriously.

Please help me and tell me what do I do. If you can tell me what I should study these 2 months to get at least 230 or something, I'd be highly thankful. Should I keep reading Kaplan and Qbank? Or should I do something else too? Please, for God's sake, help me. I'm a lot stressed by this. :\

Alisha.

First off try not to stress, yo have a lot of time to make some serious improvement so until you are closer tot the exam try to breathe, relax and focus cause undue stress will only make you do worse. Second off you mention you had a 70% uworld average which is a nice average. My question is is that timed and random? Doing u world untimed and subjec wise is not a very wise way to utilize the q bank for CK since from what I hear the timing in the test is the hardest part.
Master the boards is a decent book but like everything else for step 2 it is lacking a lot of information which you will need to fill in with Uworld. Personally I used the nw First Aid from this year that is color along ith master the boards and felt the new fa is the most superior book out now, just my opinion, maybe worth taking a look at. Most important thing is to go back to Uworld and really nail the facts. In addition if you are scoring low on the practice tests but high on the uworld q bank my guess is it is not a knowledge issue but a timing issue, so I would buy Kaplan or Usmlerx or anothr q bank and make sure u do every bank random timed until you can answer questions correctly and more importantly in a very quick manner. I take my test tomorrow morning so I will post more abut my prep and what the exam was like when I know how the actual test is. But don't stress, you have a lot of time to study and pull it together. Put in a ton of time, what ever the score reports said are your weak areas, focus on them and keep reviewing your notes. You will be fine and def with a lot of hard work will break 230+, no doubt about it.

Embarrassed Thank you and good luck!

Thanks so much for your reply.

Yes, I attempted timed and random questions.

I heard FA for CK is quite useless. Is the latest edition better than the previous one? And yeah, I'll consider going for Kaplan Qbank if I have time left with me. I don't know. :\ It's always this problem. Good on Qbank but bad in Self Assessment tests. Similar things happened in Step 1.

Do you know what all I should revise in the last few days? Should I focus just on the weak areas?

Good Luck for your exam and don't forget to share your experience!
Also, can you share your UWorld and NBME scores, please?

Well again this is just my opinion and a few of my colleagues who scored very well on the test instructed me to get the new color first aid. They made a lot of changes and I really think it's a solid book now, in fact I think it is far superior to all the other books, again though that is my opinion. With that said I still think a once through on MTB is essential to get the flow of what is the next best step but overall I didn't love MTB and felt it was missing alot where as the new first aid is really inclusive and it's color with a lot of pics. Since you did them timed/random I would say it's nerves when taking the assessments, just try to relax and us the highlight function to bold the few relevant facts u need to make the right choice. I suggest getting another bank and putting in a lot of time practicing it in timed random. I have taken advice from some other students on here and any time I saw something I had never heard of I typed it up in a running word document, however I tried to narrow it down to one or two sentences with the key fact/buzzwords, writing down long explanations is not good. In the end I ahve a word document that is about 60 pages long that I am reviewing today.

Everything done random timed 1st time through....
Uworld Average - 72%
Kaplan Average - 64% (found this bank to be a bit harder and did it first)
NBME 1 - 220 (Did it about 2 months ago)
UWSA - 252 (did this about 10 days before the exam and decided that was it for assessments, didn't feel like spending the money)

Hope this helps, just try to relax, do some mediation or something cause your uworld scores are really great, you should be scoring higher. you obviously really know your stuff, don't let your nerves mess u up. Good luck

I thought the latest edition of FA for CK wasn't bad at all for the subjects OUTSIDE OF INTERNAL MEDICINE. I used MTB for CK for all of IM and FA for CK for the rest. I did do one read through of the Kaplan notes and annotated some points into the MTB and the CK however.
