During my experience in the US (I'm currently a final year med student and did electives after my penultimate year) one thing that was constantly stressed was that the person is far more important than the score.

People get tunnel visioned on these forums about the step scores. You might have a 218, but be made of a greater moral fabric than someone who scored a 260.

The programs will judge you for who you are, not the score you got.

Scores tend to be inflated on the forums, as there's a bias in terms of score reporting. Focus on improving everything else in your application and I'm sure you'll get where you want.

You need to show desire. You'll get nowhere by quitting. Decide what you want to do and focus on it. Don't allow your future to be dictated by one score. Trust me, it's not a bad score, and you can use it as a foundation to build upon.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Keep the faith!

Haha - hey man. Hopefully I'll get my score tomorrow so I can give these forums a bit of a break. I'd still like to help out those who haven't taken the exam as much as I can before then, though.

I don't think this is true, since the national average for step 2 CK 238

IMO, you should aim for something higher than 240 in step 1 mate in order to get into a good residency program

who cares that the national average is 237
what matters is the score itself
its very respectable imho
also depends on what specialties
he is aiming for
check nrmp

In similar manner to how a score of 270 doesn't guarantee you the program you want, a score of 218 doesn't exclude you from any program.

Step stores are a component of any application. They're an important component, but still only a component. Work hard to improve other areas of your app. You can't turn back the clock or take the exam again - hard work at this point will get you a long way.
