Absolutely not.

Step 2 is increasingly being used, particularly by IM programs as it gives some insight into your decision-making acumen.

Are you an IMG? If so, having a Step 2 CK score comparable to a good Step 1 score is essential for consideration by programs.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you since the step 1 exam is actually more important than step 2. Here's my source:

Why USMLE Step 1 Score is more important than USMLE Step 2 Score

Besides, I remember reading it once in the NRMP information booklet

Now a days, Step 2 CK is becoming more important than step 1. Never take one exam more lightly than the other... After all, this is the usmle were talking about here.

Step 2 CK is literally the only measure of your ability to clinically diagnose and treat a patient over step 1 which is based on... well... the basics.

Always remember, if your an IMG.. and applying for residency, the only comparable thing you have compared to any other student in the world is your USMLE score. Thats why every step is important.

Step 2ck is far more important than step 1 for IMGs especially for IM, family med & pediatrics. IM even prefer you score higher in ck than step 1 since that proves you can make better diagnosis and management. i even heard it robs you if you do better in step 1 than ck

For AMGs, step 1 is more important since they don't need ck to match

Both steps are important for the matching.

If the residency program takes AMGs and IMGs then Step 1 will be more important because they make an excel sheet of applicants and they rank by the Step 1 score as many AMGs do not have CK score by the time they apply.

If the residency program takes IMGs only then both Step 1 and CK have equal weight in ranking the applicant.

Note that the programs that rank only IMGs are few, I'd say less than 5% of all programs in USA. Even those those New York programs that end up having only IMGs, they do have some desperate AMG applicants (those with step failures, old grads, ..etc)

This is also untrue.

PDs still place a slightly greater emphasis on Step 1 - this is clear in Charting Outcomes of the 2012 match where they asked PDs the most important factors they consider when choosing applicants. Albeit a slight difference, Step 1 was slightly more important. You can say they're approximately equal.

This is plain ignorance - refer to charting outcomes 2012. The figure for Step 1 is 81% and the figure for CK is 79% - I.e. virtually the same. But hey, maybe you know more than the NRMP.

Huh? On page 59 (internal med), its 82% for Step 1 and 76% for Step 2. What are you looking at?

I agree Syncity, they are equal weight these days especially if you are an IMG. I have many friends whi just finished interviews and there Step 2 scores were unquestionable important and they actually were the reason they were offered the interview. For AMG it is less important but still hold weight and is increasing since the the number of students has increased and residency spots are stagnant.

I think it's relevant to consider what aspects of an application program directors consider most important. Not committing to the prep fully given any misconceptions would be silly.

Anyway, I'm off to prepare for my Finals and for Step 3.
