What is the difference between cellulitis and erysipelas ?

The main difference according to MTB is that erysipelas is sharply demarcated and cellulitis is not. So if the case describes worm, hot, tender, swallen skin but without distinct borders the correct answer is cellulitis.

Thing of it in terms of the layers involves and it will make sense to you.

Cellulitis involves the deep dermis and superficial fat - less well demarcated, more diffuse. Erysipelas, on the other hand, involves the superficial layers and lymphatics - better demarcation.

In practice, the distinction between the two can often be blurred. On the boards, however, it's always clear-cut.
