Smile Doc S.J CK Experience

First of all i would like to say thanks to all forum members and staff. this forum has really helped me a lot.

Prep time...6 months

materials....kaplan lecture notes, mtb 2+3, kaplan qbank, u.world

I started my prep with reading kaplan notes. I did them once with listening to videos.(selective) i did kaplan q bank subject-wise with kaplan read. couldn't complete it (medicine part)..found it useless. Then i read mtb 2. mtb was really useful cause it made me aware of type of questions they are going to ask in exam i read kaplan notes again very fast to take extra notes and info on mtb. 2 for med and 3 for rest. i completed offline u.world with average 2 blocks a day and my score was in 70s. Finally i bought online u.world for 2months after reading horrible experiences about timing issues in exam. That was a good decision indeed. i completed it in 15 days. My routine was to do blocks like 5 -6 in one day and then read explanations till next day. So you can say i used to do 6 blocks in 2 days. My percentage was 86%
First time i got to see that abstract and drug adds in u.world. Found it tough. Actually they are not something out of this world but we find it tough due to time restraints. I took nbme form 2 offline with 26 mistakes. I wanted to take a date so i went through mtb 3 in 5 days and took UWSA. i scored 256-700
while doing uwsa i felt like i was running short of time in every block and was expecting something in 230s. It gave me push and i took exam date.
I was not completely satisfied and planned to do nbme 4 offline. Found it much easier than uwsa. Did 18mistakes. I was pretty much relaxed and confident and started reading mtb 2 with doing 4 blocks of u.world every day till end. I just used to read question and answer that, to get comfortable with questions and scanning important info from scenario. 2 days before my exam i read biostats from kaplan and step 1 FA. last day i read immunology table, glycogen storage diseases lysosomal diseases from FA step1 (highly recommended heavily tested)

Exam day

i slept full 9 hours, thank god, had my breakfast and reached prometric
i took breaks after 2 blocks every time. i had 45 questions in almost all blocks except last one in which i had 32 questions. Exam was tough no doubt, bit confusing but not impossible. I really didn't know how i was doing cause there was no time to think about the previous block or question. Last block was 32 questions long. I felt relieved and started doing that, but honestly speaking i had no idea what they were asking about, in any of those questions. i marked more than half of them but got no clue. Timing is not an issue if you practice a lot before writing the exam. In 3 blocks i still had 5 min to review marked questions. The main issue is to differentiate between similar presentations in very short time.
waiting for result. Please pray for me and feel free to ask any question.

yes you should read kaplan atleast for pediatrics. read it once and then note down important stuff on mtb. diagnosis type questions were more commonly asked than next step..hope it helps

Good luck for the result.

One question please:

In exam, does it possible to answer the question by reading last line as in UW questions, you read the last line n give you an idea sometimes. For example, which of the following will be seen in follicular carcinoma thyroid ??

nahh..i dont suggest that method. Time is very short, you can't experiment to read last line and then go through the whole question. some questions are easy and make you think you wasted your time reading whole stem but honestly its inevitable.very easy questions are very few. in all other questions you have to read the whole stem no matter what so i suggest read it complete before looking at options. But some ppl find the last line method useful. Just giving my point of view

Does Kaplan Pediatric Book help u in solving USMLEWORLD questions ??
Is it better to do combined MTB2 AND MTB3 Pediatrics than do Kaplan Pediatrics?

Thanks

yes. kaplan pediatrics is a complete book no doubt.i did cardiaology part from mtb 2 for peds and rest from mtb3...i also noted down few missing topics from kaplan like differential of anemia..juandice JRA etc..also stick first aid1 pages for immunological diseases and lysosomal diseases in mtb3

so do you recommend peds to do from MTB 2&3 and skim through kaplan peds notes to add any left out topic on out MTBs or do we need to read ped lecture notes thoroughly and then add relevent info on MTB???

Secondly you have already written your detailed prep journey but for future test takers if you can please let us know how to prepare each subject then it would be great for e.g
For internal medicine you recommend = Kaplan L.N +MTB2 + U world
For Peds = MTB2&3 + missing topics from Kaplan L.N + selected STEP1 f.a topcs +U world

so if you can let us know the prep regimen for all five subjects to tackle them efficiently then it would be helpful for all of us

Default here you go

Pediatrics

kaplan lec notes thoroughly first time.try to memorize all those syndromes. actually key to pediatrics is cramming the stuff. Its straight forward.2nd time note down missing stuff but only that you find important on mtb3 and u.world ofcourse .pediatrics is very high yield.

Internal medicine

as you mentioned above. mtb 2+ u.world... vertigo syncope and blood transfusion reactions from mtb 3.(found it useful) take u.world notes on mtb2 chapter wise so in the end you dont have a lot of notes to go through.i read kaplan once but honestll found mtb 2 good enough.

surgery

kaplan notes twice.mtb 3+ u.world

obsgyn

kaplan notes once or twice depends on the time you have got. mtb 3 and u.world..questions were confusing

pshchiatry

didnt like it in exam.kaplan once.mtb2+3..written nicely in mtbs but honestly questions were very tough and weird.u.world is very easy.i performed in 90s but in real exam it was like

best of luck!!

Thanks for your precious advice. I have few more more questions

If I follow above prep strategy in strict manner then does it assure to land somewhere btw 240-250 (with my recent step1 background)....I know its not a straightforward kind of question and many factors come into play but answer to this question assures me that I am going in right direction by investing in above plan

secondly do you think that kaplan Q bank is not imp in improving your score and it is more important to grip U world explanations then opting for more questions??

and lastly when I should insert U world & NBME4 assessement in above plan??

Thanks in advance for your help

Awesome score .... your hard work has paid off...
so in retrospect do you think that above mentioned strategy is good enough to get high score like you(and is it safe to ditch kaplan bank)
Thanks again for your patience and guidance

yes you can get a high score by following the above mentioned tips cause they worked for me. You can ditch kaplan bank but remember do u.world as many times as possible.(2-3) try to read question very carefully and extract all the info from question. If you get that answer wrong read the qustion again. pick all the clues in question compare it with similar presentations. c.k is all about compare and contrast, but in very short time. Do practice a lot i must say. You will see a lot of questions with knee pain, backache, hyperclacemia etc again plzzzz read all the differentials carefully. best of luck!! hope it helps
