Default Syndrome X step 2 CK experience -258

SYNDROME X step 2 CK experience - 258

Time of preparation: over 6 months.
Sources: Kaplan lecture notes ,master the boards (MTB) MTB2, MTB3, MTB IM , USMLE world Qbank and Kaplan Qbank
Score: 258/87

Preparation
-------------
I started my prep very slow with lot of activities going on and had no definite plan of what to do and which books to read. I did a lot of things and as a result spent a lot of time. So if you are short on time don’t experiment yourself, follow advice of someone whom you can trust. Believe me it will save you tons of hard work and time.

Internal Medicine:
what I did:
MTB2 2 times, MTB Internal medicine 2 times, emergency medicine and toxicology from Kaplan IM.
I Listened to Conrad Fischer’s lectures in Kaplan IM series and I also watched most of 20 comprehensive cases by him.
Suggestions:
Medicine is the most important subject for the exam; u just can’t afford to have it weak. So work hard on it. MTB 2 is surely the best source available. MTB IM by Fischer has few units better then MTB2 e.g Pulmonology and endocrinology. But 80% or more of medicine is same in the three MTBs.
Kaplan IM is not recommended at all, believe me, trust me!. If u find yourself weak in medicine better listen to Conrad Fischer’s lecture and consolidate mtbs, if you haven’t given Step1 then you may well need to briefly review your pathology, in case you find problems in disease understanding.
Peds:
What I did:
Kaplan Peds lecture notes 3x, made my own notes of it to review later, book itself is difficult to learn, MTB 3 Peds section 2x. Peds was my weak subject till the end because it’s the only subject I don’t like for idiosyncratic reasons, so I had to stick to Kaplan because MTB3 alone is not sufficient if it is your weakness. Didn’t watch the lectures, they were so boring I couldn’t watch half an hour. My mentor also advised not to waste time on them.
Suggestions:
Whatever is written in MTB3 Peds section is pure gold, I mean extremely High yield stuff; know it like you know your name. People who haven’t done step1 are likely to benefit the most from Kaplan Peds LN; rest of the people can skip it.

Obs/Gyne:
what I did:
Kaplan lectures and Kaplan lecture notes 1x. MTB3 obgyn section 2x. I liked the lectures by Dr. Skala and found many of his slides very useful so I printed them and made them as my review notes. When augmented with MTB3 obgyn it was such a solid combination for me that I had no trouble at all in Qbanks, assessments or in exam.

Suggestion:
MTB3 section of OBGYN is great it misses few topics like multiple pregnancy, isoimmunization, and incontinence but mostly it covers everything. Do Kaplan obgyn only if you feel weak in it.

Surgery:

What I did:
Kaplan surgery 2x, MTB3 surgery 2x. Listened few lectures as well but they are mostly the same stuff as in book. Don’t waste time on them unless you learn better with listening.
Suggestion:
I think Kaplan surgery LN are worth one reading, and then switch to MTB3 as a final review book.

Psychiatry and biostat:

What I did
Kaplan psych 1x, Blueprint psych 1x, and MTB3 Psych section 2x. UW subject review for biostatistics 1x
Suggestion

MTB3 psych misses the epidemiology and biostatistics part, you may do it from Kaplan LN or from step1’s behavioral sciences, they are 95% same. I think UW subject review for biostatistics is excellent. It is 25$ worth and can be done several times. It mainly discusses topics rather than discussing the questions. It has 73 questions if I didn’t forget.

Qbanks

Kaplan Qbank:
Did approximately 60% of it with 71% cumulative. Waste of time, period!!

UW question bank
What I did :
Subscribed it for two months. Completed first round in 30 days, after having gone through my study material almost 2x. Did all blocks in random and timed mode. Cumulative percentage 84%.
I made notes of all wrong questions and any new material. Made flash cards of tables and algorithms given in explanations. For few questions where explanations were very lengthy and I was feeling lazy to make notes, I made audio recording of explanation and put it in my cell phone and used to listen few of them every night before sleeping only. I did it selectively though.
I didn’t do all UW 2 times that was perhaps the weak point of my prep. I did all wrong questions again. The thing is that I did it first time in such a way as if I am not going to be able to do it again.

Suggestions:
Please Do UW in random and timed mode; it gives the best feel of exam preparation.

Try to develop a personalized approach of doing questions, experiment with pacing, doing back to back blocks, doing blocks when feeling sleepy etc, find out how you perform in stress. If you are doing well, that’s reassuring.

Try to find the pattern of your mistakes, is it due to lack of knowledge or does the options confuse you, or did you just overlook any important piece of info in the question.

Spend extra time on wrong questions. Go back to your primary book to see if the tested fact/concept was in the book or not. If yes that means you didn’t master it the way UW wanted, this thing helps you when you do your final review after finishing UW. Then you know where your problems are and you can fix them.
--------------------

Assessments
NBME form 4 10 days before exam scored 260/630
UWSA 3 days before exam scored 263
EXAM : 258

exam experience:
------------------

I had 4 blocks of 45 Qs, 2 blocks of 44 q’s one was of 43 and the last one was of 40.
The big picture: exam was very much like UW and UWSA, a bit difficult then both of them. Probably one of the hardest exams I have written so far. It felt difficult because the percentage of uncertainty while answering questions was more than that used to be in UW or UWSA. Length wise the questions were very similar to UW. I had couple of 2 liner questions in almost all blocks so don’t feel as if every question would be lengthy. Psych questions were the lengthiest.
Drug ads: I had 2 drug ads with 2 questions in each very easy.
Abstract: it was tough I was able to spare 4 minutes in the end for it but still wasn’t able to grasp all info. I was able to answer 2 questions but the third one was tough.
IM: it was very much like UW. Infectious diseases section was a lot like step1.
Peds: it was second most common subject on my exam. It was different then UW a lot of topics were tested which I don’t remember to have read in Kaplan or UW.
Obgyn: felt very much like UW.
Psych: Know the normal developmental milestones well, typical cases are tested commonly.
Surgery: I can hardly remember what was tested in it, it was very less in my exam , hardly 2 question per block I guess.

Know your EKG, HEART SOUNDS, XRAYS, and CT scans well. Guys exam do test your knowledge of these investigations. You just can’t depend on the case scenario to give you the clue to answer. The answer usually lies in correct interpretation of them. So work on these skills as well.

Hope this helps I know it is very detailed but I hope it will answer a lot of people’s answer. Do ask me if you want to know anything. I may answer a bit late but will reply. Pardon me for any abbreviation not understood.

Best of luck Guys may you all achieve what you wish for.

Congratulations on the great score !!

I'm a newbie here, want to start my prep on a good note. Would you recommend me to go through the Kaplan obs/ gyn book or just go with the videos and MTB 3. Are the topics covered in detail in the videos ? ( BTW I did not like the subject in my medical school and my knowledge is very vague in that ! )

I also want to know in how much time did you complete the Kaplan Q bank ?

I am sure you will score more than me this time

Thank you for sharing your experience.

I have a question. You mentioned that you were able to finish 10 minutes before. How is that possible. Can you help me please. Is there any technique which I can use to improve that . I ask you this because I am having some problems with the time in UW. I have 5 - 7 question left.
So even I am reading the questions and I try to increase the speed this is worst because sometimes the questions are more difficult to understand.

Thanks in advance !!!

Default MTB3

Congratulations on your score!!

I have a question.

I am reading first aid for step 2 CK. I also intend to read MTB 3. When I was doing the first few blobks of u world my average was on the 47th centile. So I went back to reading First aid. I also have time constraints.

My question is, can I skip MTB 2? What are the pros and cons in MTB 2?

Thanks Alice.
Well the lectures are very detailed, covers everything in lecture notes. I watched them on VLC media player at 1.5x speed and took snapshots of the slides. Later i printed the high yield ones.
I think kaplan obgyn book is well written you can do any one of them as you like. but keep the MTB3 with you so you know what extra thing you learn from the kaplan and jot it down.

Well doing online questions and doing them random is best way to simulate exam preparation. there are several things you can do to force yourrself to finish it in time.

My strategy of doing most questions is to Read the last line of question first to know what Exactly is asked and then read the question .

so if it is a diagnosis question one can read very fast to get the big picture , if it is a next step question you will require to chew every single line , you never know which piece of info is most important.

I suggest you to read strategies given in the begining of kaplan qbook as well. they are very useful.

Practice is very important so if you have time then try to do another qbank just for practice purpose.

MTB2 is extremly high yield for the exam especially the medicine section.
I saw FA for CK but if you ask my suggestion i would say master MTB2 medicine for the exam along with UW.

Kaplan peds covers most of the questions in UW and exam my percentage was 84% for peds in UW. which i could have not achieved without going through Kaplan peds.

Regarding what is important in Kaplan peds here is the pearl :
Everything which is in bold in the book is High yield and has been tested either in qbanks or in exams. that doesnt mean the rest is not important at all but rest is low yield.

i did kaplan qbank earlier in prep. i spend around 15 days in total. do it only if you can afford sometime other then what you will need for UW.

If anyone asks me what is best doing UW twice or doing both qbanks once?
My answer without any second thought is UW twice.
