Thumbs Up Happy Step 2 CK Experience (250)

Dear friends moderators of this great website, I want to thank you all for the great work, without you I wouldn’t have known a lot of stuff and probably wouldn’t have made this score.

I’ll put my experience in the form of Q & A to be easier for you to follow
N.B: I started studying step 2 CK a month after taking step 1 so if you are beginning with step 2 ck or there is more than 6 months apart between the two,you might not find my timeline convenient or you might need to see videos or review more resources.

1. How long did it take?
Exactly 5 months & 10 day

2. What resources to use ?
Kaplan Lecture Notes (all branches) , MTB 2, MTB 3.
+ Biostatistics chapter from 1st aid step 1
Conrad fisher ethics book
(used it for step 1 and made a quick review this time)
Didn’t see any videos (I wished to see cardio but couldn’t find time)

3. What was my timeline?
1st month I read Kaplan notes
To be honest I didn’t read every word, I was just opening MTB2 for internal med beside Kaplan and copying information deficient from MTB2 to make a complete source.
I did the same with Peds, OBGYN ,Psych but with MTB3 this time
This actually was a very tiring process but making a one complete powerful small source is priceless
If you find a whole topic missing like thyroid carcinoma or pleural effusion, don’t copy just cut the paper.
2nd month reading the whole stuff with adding subjects from step 1 stuff
3rd month I solved Kaplan question bank random timed 2 blocks/d with 66 % correct overall
7days in between for a quick review for added stuff
4th month USMLE world 1st time random timed 2 blocks/d --> 78 % correct
then took a week for resolving marked stuff
5th month reading the whole stuff for 3 times
Solved USMLE CD 85%
Last 10 days last read

4. Is Kaplan question bank a must?
In short solve Kaplan only if you have time, money, courageous soul
Time --> 1 month
Money --> you know
Courageous soul --> you don’t get easily disappointed when getting low scores (I scored once 45% and the average for that block was 55%)
The lengthy questions, difficult stuff will prepare you to easily solve Uworld
Never solve Kaplan after Uworld, it won’t add anything but 'll shake your confidence

5. How to solve Uworld?
I strongly recommend doing the online Uworld,
timed mixed 2 blocks/d back to back from the 1st day
Add extra information to the source but better write the differentials in a separate copybook
Mark wrong questions + correct questions with ECG, Xray ,CT, Dermatology slide or questions you answered right by luck. After finishing take a rest for day or two then solve the marked.

6. How was the exam?
The exam was pretty difficult , most easy stuff from Uworld,
ECGs were easy ,
Biostatistics and drug adv were easy but abstract was difficult, and psych was very difficult & very lengthy.
After the exam I felt like I wouldn’t get a score at all,and I kept remembering silly mistakes I made but Thanks GOD

7. Is step 2 different from step1 ?
yes while 1 is all about basics, step 2 is about making differentials (abdominal pain in different ages, knee pain , foot pain, loss of conscious
& off course chest pain ) + knowing best initial, most sensitive , most effective ,best next step for every diagnosis.
Step 1 : more tiring study + less difficult test
Step 2 : less tiring study + more difficult test

That's all ,again thanks to all previous people who posted their experiences and I would be happy to answer any questions

"Step 1 : more tiring study + less difficult test
Step 2 : less tiring study + more difficult test"

I took my CK exam today and I totally agree.

Thumbs Up

congratulations on such a massive score......and gr8 info abt exam...

i've a doubt "Never solve Kaplan after Uworld, it won’t add anything but 'll shake your confidence "...........so we shoulnt do offline version too if available, just for practising more questions(like wat i'm doin now after uworld)......

and did you find difficulty with time management (like most of them say)....how much remaining time you used to have usually while doing kaplan qbank or uworld blocks..?

Well to be honest some micro & immunology concepts are essential for step 2. starting with step1 makes you in shape to study 2 in shorter time. If you already started 2 don't worry, many people start with 2 and get higher scores than mine, but the main advice is to have step 1 books by your side, if you see a concept or question that needs basic information, read it carefully from 1 & don't just pass it.

Well about kaplan, whether online or offline contains 60% good Qs (very good cardiology stuff) and the rest 40 % is very low yield (they ask once about contraindications of small pox vaccine), off course doing more questions is good but on the other side shaking confidence in test like this isn't something easy. Again it all depends on u, if you have cold nerves go ahead, if you get depressed easily this may not be a good choice

About time this is a very critical issue especially in 2. In Uworld I had averge 2-3 min left in blocks but in test I had 2 min left in 4 blocks, 10 sec in 3 blocks and I mark the last q in 1st block without reading so as not to leave it empty. The trick is that in each block u 'll have 30 qs you've seen a similar idea before & 14 you haven't seen before. Try to solve 30 in less than 30 min as the other 14 will take more than 30 min. solve the drug ad in order but leave the abstract to the end

Actually no, I didn't have the option of date changing or any delay so I didn't do USWA or NBMEs. I preferred having 2nd look at difficult Uworld stuff than doing self assessment But what I heard from other testers USWA is far more predictive than NBMEs (they are old)

yes I just passed through it all scanning for information & topics deficient in MTB2 & MTB3 but in emergency medicine sections I didn't add the whole info as it was too lengthy, I just did it from MTB2 + Uworld stuff

If you mean kaplan books, I strongly advise to pass through them especially IM . MTB2 is a great book but it lacks very important high yield stuff
(IMN - thyroid cancers - lung cancers - pleural effusion & others....)
