Smile 253 Step 2 CK Experience

Hi everyone,

So, it's been 3 weeks since I took CK and I have postponed this post until today because I did not want to write about it if I didn't do well.

Time taken to study: 3mo
resources used: MTB2 and MTB3, FA for CK, Kaplan CK Qbank, UW qbank
Best resources in my opinion: UW and FA combined

Test itself: I thought that 40% of info were topics I had never seen before. At the end of the test, I thought that I would be lucky to have scored average on the test. (same feeling that everyone else has)

UW score: overall: 74%. Last 20 blocks: 76-77%
Kaplan (did 90% of the bank): overall score: 68%
NBME 4 (20d before the test): 232
UWSA (10d before the test): 245

Real score: 253

I know I'm missing a lot of information and therefore feel free to ask whatever you like.

Hi,

Thank you!

I took 3 months off from school and everything else. This was my only dedicated study time. I had not opened a book before then. lol. But in these three months, I did not have a set schedule. I'd wake up anytime between 7-10a and go to bed anytime between 12-4am. (I'm not good at having a daily schedule). I studied as much as I could while I was up. Therefore were some days that I would hit a mental block and therefore just take the afternoon off and hang out with my bf. I think quality is more important than quantity. I did not get through a lot of material but whatever I did get through was done thoroughly.

I thought MTB 2+3 +UW is great if you are trying to score around average (237ish). But I thought this combined with FA was excellent to score even higher. There were a few ques on my exam that were verbatim out of FA.

Hope that helps!

Congratulations on your excellent score! Hard work fully paid off.

Do you think it would be sufficient just relying on Kaplan notes, UW and FA? I have no idea of how much MTB 2 and 3 can contribute to the whole test preparation.

Probably asking too much but would be so grateful if you could give a list of topics in FA which are deficient in MTBs. Also, how many times did you do Uworld and MTBs/FA? Congratulations on your great score and best of luck for the remainder of your journey.

please can you specify certain topics to be studied from First aid step 2 ck ? I found some tables useful - especially in pediatrics
and the topics needed to be covered from FA step 1 ?

FA is high yield in its entirety (same way as FA for step 1). there may be a few topics that may not be high yield but not many. I would recommend knowing as much of FA as possible.

I had 1 abstract with 3 questions. I thought it was really hard and didn't want to waste time on it so i I left it for the end. When i came back to it, I only had 2 mins left and therefore I quickly glanced at it and make educated guesses on all 3 ques

I had 3 drug ads and I thought they were really straight forward. I wouldn't even worry about them.

Most of the ques were figuring out the diagnosis. Some next step questions. I found the next step questions to be hard because I didn't know if management was next or diagnostic tests. In the real world, you would do some simultaneously, so it was a guessing game there.

I didn't read Kaplan notes, but from what I hear, it's a little overkill, but it covers everything. if you do them, then you dont need to do MTB, but MTB is all high yield info and an easy read

But i think your plan is fine. Ultimately, UW is what you really need. I'd do it twice if you have the time.

Is UW covering all of the key points or important principles required by the real test? Does it do a good job as it serves for Step 1?

Hey,

I'm actually back doing rotations and frankly, do not have the time to go through FA and MTB and correlate missing topics. However, overall, I thought that MTB was good for a quick read, but FA is much more comprehensive. If you have to pick one resource out of the two, I would pick FA. Sorry for not being much help with that.

I did UW once. I didn't finish correcting 6-7 blocks. I read FA once and MTB once. But in reality I read both books more than that because anytime I missed a question on UW, I would note the info down in FA and read that section in FA.

Thank you for the good wishes and I'm sorry that I can't be much of a help with the list of missing topics.

UW covers a lot of important points. the ones that are repeated are more important than others. However, like I mentioned before, there was A LOT of new information on the test.
There's not 1 complete resource for step 2 like FA is for step 1, but I think the new FA for CK + UW is as close as it gets to it.

UW is the best resource out there, even though it is not complete.

I subscribed to UW for 1 mo and then renewed it for 1 week.

I took my exam on March 28 and my score came out on April 17 (3rd Wed)

congratulations ! you deserve this high score. I hope I will get score like you

can you tell me specifically how did you prepare for pediatrics and one/gyn? is MTB 3 and UW enough? How important is FA on these subjects particularly?
do you recommend to do FA after doing MTB, after UW or anytime? How long it take to review FA?

Thanks

Hi,

Thank you for the kind words.

I didn't do anything outside of the mentioned resources (MTB 2 and 3, FA, UW and Kaplan qbank) for all subjects. I found MTB 3 to be a little better than FA for ob. FA is better for gyn. For peds, I'd say use both in combo. I haven't done my peds rotation yet, so I've not had real exposure to it and therefore I needed to use all resources for that. I've heard that KLN for peds is too much and not high yield at all. I thought that FA+ MTB 3+ UW was best for peds.

I read MTB 2, then MTB 3 chapter by chapter and added all the extraneous info in those two books into FA and then did Kaplan qbank subject wise. I did this for all subjects. After doing this (which took forever!!!), I did UW (random, timed) and added all the info from that into FA. If i missed a ques in UW, I'd read the corresponding section in FA. Then about 11d before test day, I started reviewing FA and did 1 block of UW per day. On the day before the test, I reviewed my notes and went over RR at the back of FA and formulas and re-did biostats from UW and just some last minute reviewing.

Hope that helps.

I'm not sure. I didnt keep count because I did some sections in pieces (since i would read sections that i missed a question on UW).

All in all, I did one full read through of all books and I read some sections more than others while doing questions.

I did not read KLN nor watched the videos. I thought FA was really good. I'm not sure if its a necessity. I think it depends on how much you already know before you start studying. Overall, I would highly recommend it. There are many topics in FA that MTB doesn't cover. Your UW score is fine for starting off. I was only a couple of points higher than you when I started. You'll def improve.
Don't do FA if it means doing less of UW, but if you have the time, def read it.

Is it alright to read MTB 2 chapters for internal medicine and mtb 3 for the rest only? Thanks in advance.
