Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease with decreased Bone Mass/Density due to increased turn over. There is a Loss of both minerals and collagen. Most commonly occurs in post-menopausal women due to loss of estrogen effect on inhibiting IL-1 on osteoclasts.

Osteomalacia on the other hand is a metabolic bone disease with a pure mineralization defect due to lack of vitamin D. Vitamin D plays its role by increasing Calcium and phosphate reabsorption from the gut hence increasing the solubility factor which aids in bone mineralization. The most common cause of Vitamin D deficiency Is Renal failure.

Hope that Helps!
