Smile Zamalek's exam experience

Just got my result today, I got 255. This forum has helped me a lot so the least I could do was post my experience.

Here's some of my prep details:

Prep time: 3 and half months ( the first 2 and half were on and off, but the last month was intensive; about 8 hours of studying per day)
Books used: MTB step 2 for IM, psychiatry, derma and preventive medicine.
MTB step 3 for pediatrics.
KLN for OBGYN.
KLN for surgery; the clinical vignette section is very high yield.
First 2 chapters of Step 1 behavioral science for biostatistics.

Self assessment scores and qbank averages:

Uworld: 75% random, timed and first pass. This is the most important part of my prep. The concepts in uworld are very similar to the concepts tested in the exam itself and it's also the closest thing to the actual exam in terms of question format.
Kaplan qbank: I did only 40% of it and got 64% average; I think it's useless because it tests very low yield topics which are very unlikely to be tested on the exam and even the question format is very different from the exam.
UWSA: 250 ( 2 months before the exam ).
NBME 4: 246 ( 1 month before the exam ).
NBME 6: 250 ( 2 weeks before the exam ).
USMLE.org practice exam: 89% ( 3 days before the exam ).

The exam questions were more similar to uworld and UWSA than the NBMEs, but NBMEs are important to predict your score and to know the relative strengths and weaknesses.

The exam itself: it's a very tough and long exam. I don't think the questions were longer than uworld questions. The main thing contributing to the toughness of the exam is the vagueness of some of the questions and that a LOT of the questions had very close answers. Time management is extremely important, even though I finish uworld blocks and NBMEs with 10 minutes remaining, in the actual exam I had only 1-2 minutes remaining in each block. I came out of the exam feeling like sh** but since I got high scores in the self-assessments I thought that I may still get a good score.

Bottom line: the single most important tool for CK is uworld. I used to read the explanations thoroughly and write some down in separate notes. I think you should spend more time solving questions and reading explanations than actual studying from books.

If you guys have any questions feel free to ask and good luck with your USMLE journey.

Regarding the videos, I watched some IM videos particularly the Conrad Fischer videos and a few OBGYN videos. I found them helpful especially during the initial stage of the prep. But they are not a must to do, only do them if you have enough time and don't watch all the videos just watch the topics that you think you're deficient in.

I don't think there's a 'best' NBME, they are all standardized. But try to do at least 2 NBMEs and the UWSA. If you get a reassuring score in 2 or more than it's safe to take the exam.

I finished all the subjects twice with a rapid revision during the last 2 weeks before the exam. It doesn't matter how many times you study the books because it differs according to your baseline knowledge. Doing step 1 a few months before helped me a lot because it gave me more than 70% of the knowledge that I had to work with. I got 250 in step 1 btw.

Default Uworld

Congratulations on your score!! My problem is that I have time management issues with U world.I tend to end the blocks with 1-3 minutes remaining. What shall I do?
