Smile Hypermedic's CK Exam Day Experience - July 2013

Dear friends, so I took my exam yesterday, went out for watching fast & furious 6 movie afterwards, stayed up till 4 a.m and then 12 hour sleep

here I am just woke up to write down my impression about the exam.
It won’t be much since hopefully I have to study for my CS exam which is coming soon, but I hope it can help those who r still preparing for the exam. Don’t forget me in your prayers my friends.

Well, I took the exam in a different prometric center (different country from my step 1), it was weird they had different rules than other locations. I mean it should be universal, but apparently not. For example, in breaks they don’t allow using phones, or reviewing any materials related to the exam during breaks. This was weird coz I used to do the opposite in the first exam!!!!

Regarding my preparation, I will write about this in details once enshalla my score report is out.

I prepared for the exam roughly in 4.5 months. Used FA + MTB2 + MTB3 (all but IM). For qbanks, I used UW + Kaplan CK Qbank. Regarding the KLN, I only read biostatistics from it and it was useless, the book of step1 was better than step 2.

I took the UWSA and got 245, I used to mark over 20 questions in each block, got (75/70/80/80) in the four blocks of UWSA. Didn’t have time to do any NBME.

My cumulative performance:
Kaplan qbank online: 59% (1st run) March
UW qbank online: 72% (1st run) May

here is my performance graph for UW:

Ok, now the exam.

The exam was somehow tough. Some blocks were easier than UWSA and others were really tougher. I used to mark around 20 questions. I hope this is ok in the real exam and does not mess up my score LOL.

Regarding timing,

I finished 3 blocks with 2 minutes spared, 4 blocks with only 30 seconds for the last question so I had to read only the final line and take an educated guess, and the last block was only 36 questions so I had like 15 minutes spare time to read all the questions again.

The exam isn’t that much lengthy, what really consumed time was the biostatistics questions, especially the drug ads. They really screwed up my time in the block that I had barely finished in time. So my advice is to leave them till the end of your block, so If u ran out of time u can just choose whatever answer, instead of choosing a random answer for a relatively easier questions that u can solve right if u had the one minute for them(instead of the 30 sec).

Regarding the level of the exam,

Honestly, I had many repeat concepts from UW. Also, many questions were so easy that u start to wonder if it is really easy, or did I really miss something!! LOL

- 20% direct questions
- 40% need sometime but ok, u can narrow down to 2 answers
- 30% marked questions that are tough
-10% dafuq is going on here!!!! Really those dafuq questions were mostly biostats especially drug ads and abstract. I actually wanted to put my arms inside the screen and suffocate the dude who wrote the question from his neck

but to be fair, the drug ad and abstract, questions are different from those u see in UW qbank. How? First they are tougher, and more lengthy, they come in triplets ( three questions in a row). Usually the first one is very easy, and makes u feel like a boss but then when u encounter the remaining two questions, u scream dafuqqqqqqqqqqqq! Don’t waste much time or u will miss the easy ones at the end of the block.

Now, regarding the distribution of questions,

1. Cardio: got over four audio questions, actually solved them without the need to hear the murmur. Got 4 ECGs and they were ok al hamdolellah. The cardio was heavily tested but almost all concepts are repeats of UW

2. Resp: plenty of x-rays, but still u can sovle directly from question stem.

3. Renal: surprisingly, I didn’t have a single question about, acid-base/electrolytes or even any question that require using a formula.

4. Endo: the famous concept of dawn and somogi was there shining like a boss

5. GI: fair with some scattered tough questions

6. Heme: mostly about anaemias, only one or two questions involved leukemia/lymphomas

7. Musclo: plenty about myasthenia and lambert eaton, polymyositis and dermato…etc

8. Derma: over 8 questions, 6 of them were depends on photos, LOL I got two psoriasis repeat questions, but all from UW

9. Neuro: I was surprised I didn’t see the usual question about epidural/subdural hematomas

10. Ophthal: has only two questions, were ok alhamdo Lellah

11. Inf : wasn’t really tested much, I barely got around two antibiotics questions. That’s all

12. Surgery: plenty plenty. I felt like it is a surgery exam, but still u can’t call it pure surgery since many concepts rely on different branches of IM, but yea a lot questions about resuscitation and those who got hit by car…etc

13. EM/Toxo: few questions, but can’t recall now a specific thing

14. Biostat/ethic/psych: plenty hard rough dafuq type questions. For ethics I had only two, for psyhc they were ok, except for one question, I wasn’t sure it it is bipolar or OCPD, it was a tough one that really stuck in my brain till now LOL

15. Pedz: plenty, fair and repeat UW concepts

16. OBS/gyne: plenty, but fair

17. Prev.: had two or three screening questions

18. Onco.: also a question or two

So, overall: the exam was fair, but alittle bit tougher than UWSA and easier than UW bank itself. It wasn’t lengthy, but I barely finished on time except for four blocks simply coz if the biostats questions that exhausted my time.
Drug ads/abstract are definitely dafuq type. I have never experienced such badass one, and they are even much difficult from the usual ones u see in uw qbank

I marked around 15-20 questions in each block, and I hope it goes well. I was dull after the exam. Didn’t know if I messed up the exam or what, but although I studied biostats even from KLN/MTB 2 & 3 / FA , I still feel that I messed up this subject.

This is my impression about the exam and I hope it is helpful for you my friends. Please pray for me I get a good score.
Good luck everyone with your exams and enshalla I will write down a detailed experience about the materials and qbanks once enshalla my result is out

One second, I should always add my favorite photo at the end
don't worry blurred for copyright issues

honestly, i do think kaplan qbank is a must, as u can see, my first run UW percentile was much higher than kaplan, the only reason i can think of is coz of kaplan qbank

if u want to feel more comfortable and confident plz solve kaplan qbank

Thanx for such a detailed description of the exam... Really helpful.. Do u think MTB 2+3 and UW r sufficient? I mean I hv my exam in aug so I skipped KLN completely except for a few topics here and der.. Do u feel I shud read KLN for any particular subject? And also ques with audio and ECG were dey tricky or classical type?

they were classic questions. ECG: ST segment elevation everywhere, so u know it is acute pericarditis, and WPW with delta wave
audio murmur: u know the answer from the witten question rather than listening to the audio itself

regarding whether FA+MTB is sufficient or not, wait till i get my results and enshalla i will confirm but to be honest over 95% of concepts were seen b4 but difficulty varies

i would safely say KLN could be skipped in case u r doing FA instead, that's coz MTB lacks certain topics

well, i will make a separate thread enshalla explaining in details every chapter and where can u supplement the deficient material but for example u've got neurology, DAMN....i had to study it from FA and add few details from MTB rather than doing the opposite

i am currently working on an article and enshalla i will explain all in detail.

Good luck with your score

i did it something in between, the cluster mode

i combine three similar branches together in order to maximize the benefit, except for pediatrics which was real Random (350 random mode)

for example, cardio/resp/renal >>>>cluster one
endo/GI/heme/onc>>>>>cluster two
MSCT/DERMA/neuro/optha>>>>cluster three

.......etc

pediatrics itself is a random subject, u have over 350 questions from all branches so i count it as random rather than one subject

so in cluster mode, u get the benefit from doing almost semi-random and avoid the clumsiness of doing one subject at a time

of course in the second round i did it full Random , but it didn't add much since i was doing it first time almost semi-Random
hope this helps

Thanks for sharing, I'm planning to do as you said. It helps with studying and revising from books.
Good luck
