Default Juggernaut's Exam Experience

A forum member requested me to put down my experience in the website for the benefit of everyone .So here is What I did and I am putting it in a Objective form :

My Step 1 score : 256

Preparation start date : 20 January ,2013
Exam Date: 27 June ,2013
score report : 24 July,2013

Resources :
Kaplan Books and Videos all except Medicine (1x)
Internal Medicine and Psychiatry from MTB 2 (3x)
Obgyn ,Surgery and Paeds from MTB3 and MTB 2 (3x)

Qbanks :
Kaplan Qbank : did around 60% of this averaging 77%. Looking back, I did not find it particularly Useful. Questions were not representative of the real deal.
Usmle World: Did first time,subject wise,timed : Cumulative 83%
Second time Did around 1800 questions : 95%+
While I Would say it was the only source which was Close.I would not say it was the representative of the real thing.

Some of my comments from earlier posts
Quote:
I took the exam on 27th Last month, awaiting scores.

I would Frankly Disagree, exam felt significantly harder then Uworld . Mtb felt useless.

If I have to give a cut down ,around 26 Questions per block were almost twice the length of Uw questions ,14 as same length of Uw and 4 less then Uw.

I used to finish Uw blocks in around 48 min each ...In the real deal though I had my foot on accelerator ,Still finished every block in around 10 sec to finish line.

as far as concepts are concerned 7-8 questions per block were from Uw and Believe me It did not took more then say 30-40 sec to nail them down.

Most of the Uw questions had a single definitive answer and I have done well in Uw .In the real exam I was struggling in 30% questions, where two or more options felt correct.

I feel the exam has more to do with making educated guesses
Self Assessments: UWSA: 265+/800

Real Exam Score : 275

Congratulations on the great score.

You mentioned that you felt MTB was useless; how about Kaplan lecture notes and the videos? did you feel like you wasted your time going through those as well?

You also mentioned Kaplan qbank was not useful, do you think that there's another qbank like Rx or consult that's worth subscribing to or is Usmleworld the only qbank you need?

Leeby and Dralbert :
Everyone had a different exam experience.I came out of the exam half delirious.

My CK exam involved making a lot clinical Judgement calls.Overall Knowledge base accumulated over the entire med school and step 1 was what helped me get the questions correct.

As far as MTB is concerned , This book is good for a baseline knowledge which helps in tackling Uworld questions. But it does not teach you how to differentiate a spectrum of disease from other. Uworld does this to certain extent. For me It was different as being a recent graduate and having done my step 1 recently, I was fresh with lot of Baseline Information,So mtb did not add much.

Kaplan Qbank tested a lot of minutiae ,Things like Pringle maneuver ,Hyperstimulation syndrome,I did not Remember a single question which I did correct because of Kaplan Qbank. I have not done Usmlerx or Consult, so cannot really comment on that. I did say Uworld is the way to go, do it 2-3 times.

Kaplan Books : For people who have not taken step 1 before ,multiple revisions of these books are mandatory for building a solid base .I did all the books and videos once except medicine. In retrospect, I would say Kaplan Surgery and Obgyn helped a lot,But Paeds and Psych did not .

Take Home Point is that If you have taken Step 1 Recently - Do a Quick Reading of Kaplan Lecture notes and Videos and then start off with Uworld and Mtbs.
If you have not taken step 1 ,Then I would recommend Reading Kaplan lecture notes 2-3 times and then shifting to mtb2 ,3 and Uworld

Another Point I wish to make is about Psychiatry. Psych in the exam was really hard ,neither Uworld or Mtb helped me prepare for that. I got Borderline performance as a result . So You guys might wanna put some extra effort in that.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. A couple more question though: The only Kaplan lecture notes i can find are 2011, will they suffice? or do i need to look for the latest edition? Also, did you use any reference book like current medical diagnosis and treatment?

thankyou very much. I see you have a very good step1 score as well and I think you had a similar plan for tackling step1 as well. Will you give little info about your step1 as well?

What a score. Congrats. How was statistic and beh science on the test? Did you do Conrad 100 cases or the new beh book of Conrad and did you the statistic and epidemiology part at the end of Kaplan psych book ? Thanks

Also do you suggest going over first aid step 1 once just for the sake of it ?
Thanks again
