Help Low NBME Scores

Hey guys, I need a serious and wise advice from those who already took the step 2ck...

Initial preparation date: June 20th
Preparation: MTB Videos with MTB book and FA.
UW: 3 Blocks daily average 1st round (60%)

1st NMBE: Form 2 = 310 (198), 1 month after finishing MTB and UW.
I reviewed my weakest topics and reviewed all videos with MTB and FA again + 4 Blocks of UW Daily (Incorrect and Mix).

2nd NMBE: Form 3= 290 (193), 10 days before my last NMBE.

Date Step 2 ck exam: 21st of August.

What do you recommend me to do to improve my scores and my quality of studying. I'm very worried.

I hope you can help me...
Thank you,

I m afraid those are not even passing score. study hard till one week before the exam...then take another assessment and then see if you wanna go ahead with the exam. do not risk it..if you dont feel confident

basically i would say review mtb and buckle down really. Study really hardcore for a few weeks and do the next nbme. Keep doing questions as well and review the answers and options

Wow...I was going to write about myself and my NBME scores and ask others their opinion about taking CK in a week...but it seems you and I have nearly identical stories! I'm in the same situation as you...I'm so frustrated. But everyone I know told me to wait and study more until I get a passing score on NBME atleast...a 320 to go into the real exam confident. My exam is on Aug 7th, but after my latest NBME the other day, I think I'll have to postpone.

I'm thinking of doing DIT for my weak area. I've done UW, MTB numerous times, but like you, my NBME scores aren't showing much of an improvement...so maybe it's time to try something else. What do you think about DIT-at least for the weak subjects? Let me know your thoughts!

Hope it all works out for us! Good luck

Thanks for replying Mongo:

Well, after all, I tried to find the bests advices from people who really knows. I call several medical institutions to get their advices. This is what I'm going to do:

1. The score for the step 2ck is going to be delayed, so if you do the exam on August the 7th or the 28th the results are coming up on sep 25th , so its better to study more.

2. I got 3 weeks to do the exam, I ll do 1 mixed block of UW at 8am then I review it, then I'll study 1 topic on fast play (1.5) of MTB videos with the book, then 1 block of UW of the topic that you reviewed and then review an other topic, then do UW of that topic and again and again. I schedule all the review for one week with all the topics of master the boards and FA.

3. After that madness week on next friday, NBME 6.
4. Another madness week and NBME 4 (most predictive).
5. If I got a passing score on the NBME 4 , I do UWSA, If I pass I will take the exam.

I don't suggest you to take DIT because Its not that good for the CK as was for the step 1 and the videos are to long so it will take you too much time, if you are going to do videos, do Kaplan Videos with conrad, with MTB book and FA (because completes MTB)...

so tell me, what NBME s have you take? What do you think?
Man we can do this, its the last part, lets kick ass...

DIT is great! Really helps me to learn the UW concepts!
But to study DIT, you must have Step Up

Hey Daviddrdr,

Thanks for that detailed breakdown of what you are doing! Appreciate it That's very similar to what I was doing before, but then the last two and a half months all I did was UW and MTB by itself. I am going to go back to what you're doing though. I think that exposing yourself to the same info in different forms is a great way to learn, memorize and test yourself.

One question for you. You wrote: " I schedule all the review for one week with all the topics of master the boards and FA." By "all the review" do you mean that you complete one entire round of the videos with MTB plus FA in one week? Also, which videos are they? I have Kaplan 2010 I believe. Hopefully that will work. They also have high yield videos on Kaplan's website, which I have as well. It's much shorter...but I'm not sure if it's sufficient enough. Any thoughts on that?

So, I postponed my exam to Aug 17th. Not happy about that, but I suppose I had no choice if I want to ensure that I pass! You're right-if the scores are going to be reported at the same time...why waste those precious extra days I could have?!

As for NBME's, I've taken form 12, 4, and 2. Scores were 193, 196 and 198, respectively. I found form 4 to be very hard. I felt like I was doing well on form 2, but clearly I was wrong! Now there's only one more form left to test myself with, plus one more UWSA. I do well on UW...but NBME is really different. Do you think so?

I love your positivity and yes, we can certainly do this! We're definitely smart enough...just need to focus more perhaps! Not sure, but we're ALMOST at the finish line...let's definitely give it everything we got!

I'm new to this forum, but I think we can be "friends" on here. If you want to stay in touch...if you need any advice/motivation, I'm here! Sorry if I didn't offer you too much advice! But for what it's worth-I think your strategy is great and will help us a lot!

-------------------------------------

mycoplasma: I'm sorry to hear that. But it's good that you also postponed it. And that's also what I did for the past two months. How many times have you done UW?

DocSikorski: Thanks for the info. I MAY use it on my very weak areas...I don't think I have time to complete a full round of it though! Fortunately, I have Step-Up

Yes, Mongo I schedule all the high yield videos of kaplan for one week, which they are 21 videos. I highly recommend it, if you dont have them I can share them to you.

so I started yesterday;

UW Mixed block = 80%> Oby/Gyn Videos+Oby/Gyn UW 44 q block (73%)> ID videos+ ID UW 44 q block (86%)> radiology...

Today: UW Mixed bloke = 83%> Cardio Videos+ Cardio UW 44 q block (74%)> ID videos+ Pulmonology UW 44 q block (91%)> Derm videos+ Allergy and inmunology.

Next NBME 6 = This friday (target score >210).

Whats your progress? or how are you studying?

From my own experience: If you are pressed on time, its better to study on your own and not from videos...

Hey guys!

So nice to have people participating in this thread...and to know that we're not alone. So I have 12 days left and according to NBME, I still have many weak areas so I pretty much need to review everything

I am so conflicted. All I did for the past few months was MTB + UWx2 plus incorrect qs. So now, should I try to do as many Kaplan videos as I can while still keeping up with UW...or redo MTB again while doing UW? I feel like I need to do something different since the latter combo didn't help me.

Days are running low and I can't even decide which method I want to take! I think I'm still going to stick to Daviddrdr's plan...which is to do videos, then read the corresponding pages in the book, then UW qs on the same topic!

I know it's a lot...but I'm just going to focus on my weakest areas.

Good luck to everyone!

Guys I don't believe we are all togther in same situation.

I did NBME 4 10 days ago and got 280(191). I am not doing any NBME for assesment purpose. I am gonna give my exam on 4th sept.
I will study hard till 25th august and will give UWSA and If I will get above 240, I will go for the exam.

Right now I am about to finish UW in 2 days. my average is 67%.
all the best

Hey , I already have eras token but I am not sure If I am applying this year.
It depends , If I am gonna gv my exam at 4th , for which I am really trying. Then may be I will apply only for some programs, I do not have clinical experience so I am reluctant.
I am thinking to apply next year with step 3 and wd strong application.
Regarding exam I cannot afford any score less than 240, bc my score on step 1 is 227, which is not so competitive. So I am trying and hoping to do best in CK.
I am also getting engaged in sept , so I am in stress now , should I really gv my exam before that or after...But saying this , I am about to finish UW so why I not I repeat it and spend good tym on mtb2/3 and see If I get abv 240 in UWSA.
I will solve nbme offline just to learn not to asses as my all seniors said Nbme is not great for everyone in ck.

How about you ?? I believe CK isnt like step1 , like memorising stuff, its all about concepts.

all the best

Wow Mapsy!! Congrats for your engaging, I wish you the best... I hope you can do the exam before the that so you can get a great gift...

Well my first NMBE was form 2, I did it just before finishing first round of UW and I got a 198, 8 days after that NBME 3 which I get worse, the stressful thing is that there wasnt a extended form of those in the NBME page, so you cannot see in which one s you failed... I think my new plan of studying is helping me , but I cant say anything until my next NBME... I'm saving my UWSA for the last, do you think it better to do an other q bank? like kaplan or usmle weapon?
