Experiences Teona's exam experience

Hello everybody!

I am so relieved that today I got my CK score 250 and most important I am ECFMG certified! What a great feeling after one year and a half of studying...

This is the post that I wrote the day after I took my exam. If you have any questions, please ask me and I will try to answer them the best I can.

Good luck!

"I just took my exam yesterday and I wanted to share a little bit from my experience.

First of all, I didn't think that questions were out of the blue, from Mars etc. I felt like 70% were asking to apply the concepts studied from UW and MTBs. Of course, there were questions where I had to take an educated guess and others where I had to use my non UW medical information or to apply some concepts acquired in medical school.

The exam is long (everybody agrees on that I think)...I had mostly 45 questions, 2 blocks with 43 and the last one was 32 (all of them had 60 minutes). The questions length is similar to UW and 150 free questions. I had questions that were 4 lines long and others (mostly psychiatry) that were really long. I marked around 20 questions in each block, with the exception of the 5th block that seemed really easy.

I think the most tested was muskuloskeletal, back pain, nerve lesions, preventive medicine, a lot of gynecology (I only had like 2 questions on Obstetrics), biostatistics was really hard (it is not only sens, sp, PPV, NPV, but also have to know really well NNT, ARR, RRR etc). I had 3 ECKs, 3 chest CTs, XRays (foot), 2 murmurs, some derma pictures (2 of them wasn't sure on the diagnosis).

Most of the questions were asking what is the next best step in management...not so many on "what is the diagnosis". I didn't feel I had questions from Step 1 (probably the biostatistics and another one that was easy). No glycogen storage diseases, but had some on immunodeficiencies in Pediatrics.

I don't have a clue of what I have done... I can end up with a score between anywhere between 220-250. It is so hard to predict...

My scores were:

Step1 244;

Kaplan QBank: 68%; UW: 75% (untimed, random, first time pass)
NBME 4 (1 week before): offline, 23 wrong questions, around 248;
NBME 6 (5 days before): online, 21 wrong questions, 248;
UWSA (2 weeks before): 247
150 Free q (2 days before): 91.5%"

I only did NBME 4 and 6. In my opinion, both NBMEs had really short stem questions compared to the real exam and there were no drug adds/abstracts. Probably they were similar to real exam in terms of some concepts tested, but not in terms of question length and the way they were built. Anyway, it is a good practice and if you have time and some extra money I advice you to take at least one NBME.
