Experiences drssbaz Step 2CK Experience; 265

265 Beyond my wildest imagination this time!

I have not been regular on the forum this time around. I had a personal roller coaster ride going on.
Now that I got a good score, I think I can write something meaningful.

The Sources:
Kaplan Lecture Notes: Finished once and revised IM once.
MTB 2 & MTB 3: Finished once. I have no idea what these books are so hyped about. I found them very very deficient. They don't even cover some of the most basic and frequently tested topics. It was frustrating!
Behavioral Science KLN Step 1: Went with it this time again. It's totally worth it.
Kaplan QBanK: Did about 78%, scored 67%. Another thing that can frustrate you beyond limits just because the interface is sooooooo primitive!
UWorld: I 'll list the scores with the scores. It's the one part of prep you can't do without but frankly even UWorld is not enough.

The Schedule:
This time around I didn't really have a schedule.
I started while doing an observership and then there was too much international and domestic travel going on and a pile of domestic issues that wouldn't get sorted out. As they say, I was in a proper pickle
Avg hours per day (while I was home) was 4-5 hours.
I was only able to finish what I was able to finish and take the exam in a hurry because of the delay in score reporting for CK takers after 27 Jul (I didn't know it when I booked my date but it meant I couldn't postpone.)

The Day Before:
Took the Free 150. Scored 93% and was feeling very happy about it.
Revised whatever flash cards I had made.
My husband was taking Step 1 and when I went to pick him up, his face spoiled the remaining three weeks for both of us. I got anxious because he had a really bad day and said the test was nothing like the Free 150 he had answered the day before.
Thanks to anxiety, could not sleep in time the night before.

The Exam:
I went in kind of numb and came out kind of blank. It's scary when an exam is like that.
I took a break at my seat between blocks 1-2, 3-4. Took about 10 min breaks after blocks 2, 5, 6. Took a 15min break after block 4 because I almost fell asleep during the block. Took another 15 min break after block 7 because I was feeling worn out after the long day.
I took bananas and RedBull.
I had 4 blocks of 45Qs, 2 of 44Qs, 1 of 43Qs and 1 of 36Qs.
There is enough time to answer all the blocks and take breaks.
I had 4 ads/ abstracts and 3 or 4 media Qs in all but all were doable.
The questions were not from out of the world but they were confusing. I kept narrowing down the options to last two but then I had to take a calculated guess. (The reason why I wasn't expecting my score to be good.)

The Scores:
UWorld Unused, random, timed mode: 77%. Started at 48%, stopped after doing about 10% of the Qbank because I was still below 50% and went back to the lecture notes.
UWorld Incorrect:78%
UWorld Marked:81%
NBME 4:5 weeks before; 610/260
Kaplan SimTes:4 weeks before; 75%, no score projection.
NBME 6:3 weeks before; 620/263
UWSA:2 weeks before; 700/256
Free 150:1 day before; 93%

2CK Score: 265

My Two Bits:
A friend told me that CK is all over the place and now I know what she meant. It is a test of knowledge but nobody is sure which bit of information is correct. It is the most confusing set of questions I have ever come across.

I guess, the only thing in our hands is to get the basics right, keep calm, not fall asleep during any blocks and then Pray like Hell!

I know my post is also all over the place because I'm still a bit dazed that I got that much. I'll try to clarify if you ask me.
Hope you guys have a better experience than I had.

Good luck!

Default Thanks~!

Thanks alot for sharing your experience and kudos on amazing score.

well i am in sorta pickle. I am giving step 2CK before step 1. I know, i know what everyone is gonna say that give 1 first. But thing is i have been going through kaplan LN for a while for step 2.

now no one resource cover it all, i would really appreciate your suggestion about how one should approach this beast called step 2 CK. I am doing Uworld first round.
should i supplement it with step up to medicine? psychiatry is my weakest so any suggestions there? and was kaplan Qbank useful ? or should i skip it and do uworld couple of more times.?

congratulations!!! awesome score!!
i totally agree with you about mtb 2 and 3..i feel they are very deficient ...
i see ppl score really well just using mtb 2 ,3 and uw....i dont know if they have a solid knowledge base which i seem to lack .i'm doing uw subjectwise after 1 read of mtb and i'm like stuck at 67% half way through it.
what do u suggest to do to improve on the deficiencies...are the kln enough or did u use any other book.

thanks.

Congrats on that awesome score. while scoring low on Uworld you said you went back to kaplan for IM. How useful do you think kaplan IM was overall including the real test?

Hello doc,
Everyone has their own reasons for the order in which they take the steps so I won't lecture you on that. There are few concepts in Step 1 that make CK easier but overall I did not run int too many questions from Step 1. SO go ahead with whatever you've planned.
I had only enough time to do Kaplan LN and MTB 2 & 3. I have been practicing for a few years now, so the concepts of management are in place for me. I think that helped.
I have not seen Step Up so I can't comment on that. Hopefully some of the other guys may help.
I did Psych from the Step 1 Beh Science book and Kaplan.
Any questions you do from any Qbanks will be useful. I did Kaplan Qbank but didn't complete it for lack of time. There were some questions on my actual test that were similar in structure to this QBank but not too many to be significant.

My experience is that the more questions you do from any source, preferably online because they are the most updated source, will help your CK score.

I hope that helps. Don't hesitate to ask for any clarifications.

Good luck!

Hello creme,

As I've written in the previous post, I only did KLN. It is such a big book that going through it twice ate away all my time but it definitely helped with my score on UWorld.
The only other books I read were MTB 2 & 3 and that was because I had spent the money to buy them already . I didn't go through them a second time because I felt it was a waste of time.
Since there was no single book like FA in CK, I had annotated my KLN books from the QBanks.

I hope that helps.
Good luck!

I hope my last two posts have been able to answer your questions.

Good luck to both of you!

I just want to know if there were many ECG questions?
Were they simple or did you come across complicated ones like AVRT or other kind of arrythmias ?

I predict that you'll score somewhere between 250-255 chill out and enjoy victory, it's only a matter of time.

Like the others have said, you seem to be ready for your target score.
The question stems were usually of average length on my exam, very few were very long and some were even one line long.

Good luck!

I did not have even a single ECG question but I read some other posts and people say that they did not get any that were very difficult.

Hope you are lucky on that one too.

Good luck!

Thanks for sharing your experience drssbaz,
Which Qbank did you start with Uworld or Kaplan Q bank ? From what I understood , it must be Uworld ( since you said you stopped and went back to Kaplan Notes)
Initially , Did you start off with Uworld without one complete reading ?

Hi Pearl,
I started with UWorld.
I don't start QBanks before finishing my first read because I prefer to do them in Random, Unused, Timed mode the first time. It gives me better idea where I actually stand overall.

Hope that helps.
Good luck

Hi Drssabaz, thank you for your wonderful post. Congratulations on the great score and all the best for your further steps. I wanted to know how long you took to prepare for step 2 CK? What do you think is the minimum preparation time to get a decent score?

Thanks
