Default One Day...

One day of unsuccessful studying = one day further from the exam = one day of more torture = one day more of ignoring your happiness

Came across Nice q...

1. Premature adrenarche (axillary hair before 6yrs)- due to excessive androgen from adrenal gland- no clinical significance

2. Premature thelarche (breast and uterine changes)- Ovarian estrogen and progesterone- no clinical significance

3. Premature pubarche (pubic hair)- may be due to CNS lesion in 50% cases and require evaluation.

Default CK Psych not as easy as I thought...

Clearly, I havent finished psych...bummer

But one thing I wanted to share with you guys is that the classification of antipsychotics given in MTB 3 are the best. It has a table with typical and atypical antipsychotics.
Also, MTB 3 contains psych material not discussed in Kaplan/MTB 2. You guys should definitely check it out and include MTB 3 in your prep for CK psychiatry.

That's all for now...

Show Teeth Hey guys!

Hey guys, in the same boat! Lets do this!

I've finished one read of KLN.
MTB 2 n kaplan q bank for IM n MTB 3 for Minors with online UW subject wse. Left with UW IM for the next 2 weeks and whatever IM missed out in MTB 3. I know its haphazard! Thats step 2!
NBME- Jan end
Feb- Read everything again.
Exam by March 1st wk

Guys, jus a tip, if ur weak at Biostats, do the 25$ separate q bank in UW! I found it really useful and worth the cost coz its for 90 days. Mastered the subject finally!

Keep studying! Word hard! Don't stop!

STEP 1(X) STEP 2 CS(X) STEP 2 CK(March) Match 2015 Hopefully!

Don't worry. A quick read from First aid step 1 helps especially for biochem lipid storage diseases which I find really hard to remember. n complaining is normal.. jus dont stop studying Keep going! Uworld is a learning tool.. dont bother about the score. Know the concepts well! Good luck !

Its true that you might feel some questions should be on step 1 exam but they will come up so some high yields topic should be revised especially biostats and pshyc, lil bit of paeds genetic disorders mech, clinical features , enzymes etc.... how is everyone doing with their prep... Im planning on taking the exam in the first 2 weeks of feb.... Revising mtb 2 and 3 rite now .... Will do kaplan pshyc book again and first aid step 1 biostats and pshyc. Revise uworld concepts and take nbme.... .

Hey thanks Actually I did uworld in subject wise timed mode and score was around 80%. Basically I used it as a learning tool. I made a note from it and before taking my nbme2 I revised all marked qs of uw along with my note.

Default Me being quiet means only one thing...

I'm off track...after all the boosts i try to give on this forum, I lost focus of my own goal
I'm trying to catch up and plan to give my first NBME on Feb. 3. I'm hoping I can finish round 1 of studies by then. Please God, help me! I have IM, Peds, and surgery to do until Feb. 3rd. Wish me luck!
Happy Studying...

CK in March!

Yeah...UW+MTB is enough. I liked surgery qs in kaplan though.
Read chest trauma, burn, diverticulitis, hemoptysis, solitary pulmonary nodules and breast mass very well. I have seen lot qs from these topics. best luck

I think thats a good idea...while doing UW, you can then write notes in Kaplan or MTB.

Default Pre-test probability of Coronary Artery Diseases

I think this is one of the volatile stuff so I thought lets post it here..

1. Low risk cases- Asymptomatic people of all age
Women <50 with atypical chest pain

2. Intermediate- Atypical chest pain in men of all age
Women 30-50 with typical chest pain
women >50 with atypical chest pain

3. High RISK - Men>40 with typical chest pain
Women >60 with typical chest pain

Just remember LOW and High probability cases. Everything else under intermediate risk

EVALUATION of these cases....
1. LOW RISK- Nothing required

2. HIGH RISK- Start treatment then angiography

3. INTERMEDIATE RISK- Exercise stress test or pharmacological stress test, If it come positive then angiography.

Happy reading ppl

Surgery is very vague subject. You will not find any specific type of questions in UW like we see in the other subjects. When I started reading Sx from UW I was hardly getting 65% but eventually it improved. I would say make a good note from UW and keep revising and nail this subject You will defiantly improve, just keep reading

I am doing obg now from kaplan and mtbs alongside, just like i did IM, surgery and peds. I only watched IM videos, and now watching obg ones. I made notes of IM and peds from kaplan. but i think i lost a lot of time there. so for obg just giving kln 1 read. and if i ever need to come back, i may. hope this is better. i feel like my prep is way too vague. using 3 books, making notes, not sure if its worthwhile. i think obg will take me a week atleast, was planning to start uworld from feb, but looks like its gonna be a while. really wanna move faster. already forgotten my step 1 stuff. and the 1st IM reading 2 months back. This isnt good.

I think its absolutely normal how you feel. In my experience, the first read should be the best in the way that you have compiled your notes, they are all in one place so that for the the next readings you can quickly go over your notes. Also, use your best judgement to decide which MTB to go with. You may want to use MTB 2 for some and 3 for others.
That's where compiling notes in one place comes in handy.
I know it takes longer than expected (im struggling with Surgery this week) but itll be worth it!! Your next read will be so much easier

Is this the only NBME you're taking? if so, then review your weak areas pretty well. Dont try to go over the topics you have mastered. dont waste time. and simply revise, revise. I think 246 is a pretty good score, though.

Looks like the party is over here.

i have been an observer in the past but decided to be more active on the forum, i just thought it would be better if we got through this together and pushed each other further to ace this exam.

LET'S DO THIS.

My exam is after 2 months and i'm going through the 1st round of Uworld.

So I have decided to skip KLN for all other subjects except for IM and do MTB 2&3...I just can't seem to retain the info from KLN for the other subjects. I hope I do not regret this decision. I plan on doing IM from KLN one more time with MTB before starting UW...

Default Happy Snowy Monday!

@truthseeker >>> if you made notes from UW and are satisfied that its enough, then I dont think you should renew your UW subscription. But I do think that you should review Kaplan notes + UW notes as much as you can before your exam. And stick to these two materials until u know each detail by heart. Take NBME's to assess your progress.

@dr.jd >>> I agree NBME 6 is a tough one. dont let it get to you and just review the weaknesses. I would takethe UWSA if I were you but after reviewing.

@egyptdoc66 >>> LOL, i think the party is just getting started since we are all getting close to our exam dates!

@ cardiovasculaire >>> try to hang on to Kaplan. There are definitely important points there that you dont want to miss/skip. Kaplan for surgery, psych. is a must! Sorry if this is going to cause you more trouble

Hey! Honestly, dont waste your time on other books. People are getting great scores just by studying Kaplan, UW, and MTB's. I'm studying MTB 2 for some topics and 3 for others. If you just know the concepts very very well from these books, you will be good to crush the exam!
The key is repetition and getting all the concepts clear.

GoodLuck!

I have another doubt if u can help!

I have CK exam one 1st august so i have 6 months to prepare for it but i want to do one month externship in may and take CS exam in june.

So basically i wont be studying much for CK so i am left with lets say 4 months total.

So would it be a good plan to it this way BECAUSE i want to apply for 2015 matches or should i focus only on CK and do CS later on

i am quiet confused please help me decide

I just realized that Cardiomyopathy is a VERY IMPORTANT topic on uworld, which i think would be on the exam too, with a lot of q's.

The other thing is that i try not to write too much notes from uworld that i don't need, i just try to minimize the notes, so that i would be able to read them again later on, plus not to waste too much time.

I also try adding the notes to MTB as much as i can, so i won't have to go back and forth and that these points will be there when i'm rereading MTB.

My only issue i'm trying to figure out now is to finish 2 blocks per day with their explanations, as this would speed up the uworld process.

I also think that uworld is really good since it helps a lot with learning, as i've read certain topics a couple times but didn't quite understand it, or had the important stuff to be able to SOLVE a question.

Hope you guys are pushing yourself and staying on that chair to finish up.

Are you doing UW in mixed timed mode or tutor subject wise? Tat is my biggest dilemma with UW.

Hello everyone!

Is it okay if i start directly with Uworld? will that be too much to begin with? without fully reading MTB? I have very less time before this september. ( A quick review of my profile- been a yr n half since i wrote step1, got 244 back then, want to score a little higher than that, read kaplan medicine n MTB2 in bits a pieces over the last few months.)

Thanks much!

I think if u read Kaplan completely at least once, then u should attempt UW. Otherwise, I dont think it would be as beneficial if you dont have a base from Kaplan.

Default back to preps and change of plans.

Nice to see so many members taking test between feb-april. You guys are doing great !! I wont be able to take the test during this period, I feel so bad now... I have been really lazy all these month, I need to start nearly all fresh

I hate to the liberty of scheduling the test, I haven't done it yet.. I am yet to finish 1st read of KLN.. it is taking so long!! MTB2 +3 next. In dilemma whether I should include FA or not(It really helped me for step1).. Any views on including FA ??

I have to take the test before July at any cost.!! sorry everyone for spoiling the thread with my rant. Studying alone sucks ... So, this is where people will understand my frustration.. Sorry again. Good luck with preps.

I will do it, I have done it in the past. I have to stay away from social networking sites, they are such a sucker!!

Hey buddy,
this exams suck big time but you do not have to give up...even if you have to start over a thousand times. The important thing is to keep moving forward and take the test only when you are confident and ready.

I planned to take my step 2CK last December but I was sick for about two months and now I am only looking at April at the earliest...so I know what you mean...just keep moving forward.

As for KLN I know the read is long and somewhat boring but I would suggest you read it for IM and then go to MTB for the other subjects and then come back to KLN for surgery, psych and any other subject you feel a void in...that is what I am doing...
All the best in the prep...

In the same boat. Exam getting postpones just cuz I am lazy enough to allow distractions. And before i know it, I'm 2 months behind my original planned date for the test. So its gonna be april most likely now.

Please tell me whats best for psych? KLN step 2 LN or step 1 FA behavioral sciences? Also what about biostats?

I am not sure about the Psych thing but I plan to do it from MTB2&3 and KLN...then supplement with UWorld...I have read others doing it from FA Step 1 but I am not sure.

All the best with your prep. The best way to stay away from distractions is to stay away from your phone, internet, tv, etc during your active study hours and catch up at the end of the day...hope this helps and all the best with your prep.

Hey guys! Hope everyones studying hard and doing well.
I cant believe i was so late to see this announcement, but i just saw it today
http://www.ecfmg.org/news/2014/01/22/unified-content-outline-adopted-usmle-exams/#sthash.Zy7G7V2d.dpbs
I know it clearly states that it wont affect content of the exams and the changes will be subtle.. just wanted to make sure that this shudnt affect our prep right? We're not gonna have to go back to step1 books right? Right? Somebody needs to calm me down so i can get back to studying!

i think those changes are more dramatic for step 3...so thats why im not worried.

also, everyone, the FIRST read is definitely the toughest. Read thoroughly, read and decide which books to stick with for the 2nd read, and make your notes or flashcards in one place. I'm going back and forth with KLN, MTB 2 & 3, and UW. And when you are done with subject, make sure you know exactly which books to study from for your next reading. It should be easier and more concise. (personally, I'm trying to get rid of kaplan for my 2nd, 3rd and future readings. therefore making all my notes into the MTB's or typing my own notes from Kaplan, attaching images from the internet so its easy to retain. its a pain in the @#$@ but hopefully will be worth it.)

Good Luck everyone, time is ticking

Angry Really Disappointed!

Guys after around 4 months of extensive studying! I took my first Self assessment (NBME 6) today and I was really disappointed! I scored 229 (30 wrong).
I really panicked during my first block and of the 30 wrong 16 were from the first block only, was short of time in that block and missed 2 questions. The other blocks went fine had 4 wrong each in blocks 2 & 3 and 7 wrong in the 4th block. I flunked in Gynae in which the entire bar was below borderline! The other week areas were Musculoskeletal and nutritional & digestive disorders.
I thought I could be in shape in another 3 weeks but guess will have to take a couple of extra weeks.

So far I have done UW only once (scored 71%) and I plan on doing UW again and Read MTB 2 for Medicine, MTB 3 for Paeds and Psych (Plus biostatistics from Step 1 FA), Kaplan for OBGYN and Kaplan surgery(Vignettes only). After doing all this in 17-18 days take UWSA. Will book the date after one week if I cross 245!

I am targeting 245+, but this exam is really different and unpredictable! Really hope I manage to improve in the end! Let me know what you guys think about my plan!

Buddy, this only means one thing. Review, review, and review. Keep doing UW until u score 80% or above. Study (not read) the explanations. Just keep going thru the books until ur confident. Dont skip anything. I'm sure you are super frustrated but dont give up hope. You really dont want to give the exam a premature attempt. The exam is really not that easy and straightforward.
One thing that helps me to retain the concepts is making my own notes and searching for pictures/videos on the internet.

You're not alone, we're all here together! Good Luck!

Same for me, it's a bit frustrating to be honest, i only do a max of one block per day, with the explanations, and my goal was to do 2 blocks, but it just takes time, to write notes from the qbank and understand the concepts, it might be bec. of me not having a lot of knowledge, even though i've read kln notes and mtb, but i just figured that there are LOTS of concepts that are simply NOT in the books.

I actually read a post of someone who finished the qbank in 12 days, doing about 7 blocks per day, so i guess it's depends on your specific knowledge and the understanding of the concepts.

Just keep at it! I know it gets really frustrating! But just a matter of few more days to freedom. Do take an assessment soon after uw first run as it pushes you to go harder!

Good luck!

Try to speed up a bit to atleast 1.5 blocks daily since Youl need a revision of uw too, save some time for that. Writing important concepts really help as mtb deficient in many areas and uw suppllements it well. Take an assessment after uw and see where you stand!

Good luck!

Those scores are really nice! Nbmes for step 2 aren't as predictive as for step 1. Vice verca for uwsa. Take uwsa with Fred free 150 as an exam simulator to get the feel of the real exam! I think you are ready. That score of 246 in nbme 4 (more predictive compared to nbme 2) should give you confidence!

Good luck with your exam!

Hi
I read kaplan peds only once when I started reading for step2ck. After that I read mtb 2&3 along with uworld. In my last month I read only mtb3 & my uworld notes.

Default Doing Kaplan Qbank

so I decided to add Kaplan Qbank to my first read. I finished with IM of KLN and doing the MTB 2&3 for the other subjects and it is pretty intense. Tring to do 1block of IM questions from Kaplan Qbank while reading the other subjects so that I can keep the revision going...two more weeks to go and I should be done with reading the other subjects...God help me...
